Chapter 189: Marion’s Choice

At those words, Marion unexpectedly calmed down. Slowly regaining his composure, he raised his head to glance at the Federation envoy on the screen with an indifferent expression. "It's too early to decide whether I've gone mad," he said coolly. "But there's one thing I know for certain: the path laid out by the Charles Federation was never ours to begin with."

Gabrilles' face darkened. "Marion, you're throwing away your future. Without the Federation's support, both you and your space fleet will eventually be crushed by Colcrav."

"The road ahead of the rebels is none of your concern," Tang Fang interjected, cutting through their exchange. "If I were you, I'd already be thinking about my next move."

Gabrilles smirked smugly. "Go ahead, try breaking in. This room happens to be part of the base's emergency shelter system. The walls are reinforced enough to withstand a multi-megaton nuclear blast. Food and water supplies here can last for ages." His tone grew more confident as he added, "Oh, and before I forget—Joseph has already informed the other leaders of the Garcia rebellion about your 'heroic deeds.' Very soon, your former comrades-in-arms will arrive with their fleets to rescue me, an outsider, while crushing your forces and capturing Marion Duncan—a traitorous coward."

Marion's expression shifted sharply upon hearing this. He had instructed Shi Huaqing to keep Joseph under watch when they left earlier, but it seemed that something had slipped through the cracks.

"Emergency shelter? Blast doors?" Tang Fang scoffed at Gabrilles’ threats, waving dismissively. With a flick of his hand, a zealot emerged from system space, stepping forward with swift precision. In one fluid motion, the towering golden warrior swung its psi blade, cleaving the seven-meter-high reinforced door into pieces. Behind the wreckage stood Gabrilles, his face pale with shock.

"Kill them! Kill them!" Gabrilles screamed hysterically.

Five guards opened fire, sending a barrage of bullets toward the breach. But against the might of a zealot, such resistance was nothing more than a futile struggle. Golden flashes illuminated the corridor, and within moments, all five guards lay dead, their bodies crumpling lifelessly to the floor as the intense heat vaporized the blood around their chest wounds.

"Don’t... don’t come any closer!" Gabrilles clutched the "Silver Knight" pistol in his trembling hand, staring wide-eyed at the three-meter-tall alien warrior clad in golden armor. Panic seized him completely.

A silver streak flashed, followed by a spray of blood. The "Silver Knight" clattered to the ground.

"Huh... huh..." Gabrilles clutched his bleeding right hand, glaring at the trio who now entered the room. "Who are you? What exactly are you?"

Tang Fang stepped forward, his gaze cold and unyielding. "Here’s some bad news for you: I intercepted Joseph’s message before it could leave Krotan."

"What?!" Gabrilles paled even further, his gaunt features twisting into a grotesque mask resembling a bowl of soggy noodles. Beside him, however, Marion visibly relaxed. He had almost forgotten that Tang Fang possessed control over every orbital satellite orbiting Krotan. For Joseph to sneak a transmission past his surveillance would have been sheer folly.

Without hesitation, Arroz strode forward, leveling his gun at Gabrilles. A red dot appeared on the envoy’s forehead, courtesy of the laser sight.

"You… what do you think you’re doing? I’m an envoy of the Charles Federation! Killing me means declaring war on the entire Federation!"

Bam.

The shot rang out. A silver beam pierced Gabrilles’ forehead, exiting through the back of his skull. Blood spattered across the wall as his body collapsed, eyes frozen in a final glare.

Arroz holstered his weapon without so much as glancing at the corpse, then turned and walked out of the room.

Watching the veteran disappear down the corridor, Marion sighed softly. "The Silver Eagles truly produce men of honor."

"The Silver Eagles?" Tang Fang suppressed a chuckle. The name Arroz had made up on the spot had somehow stuck. Rather than correcting him, Tang Fang changed the subject. "What about Joseph?"

"If I’m not mistaken, Shi Huaqing likely failed," Marion admitted, his voice tinged with regret. After fighting alongside Joseph for so long, the betrayal weighed heavily on him.

"What about the fleet Gabrilles mentioned? Could Joseph’s escape spark unrest among the Krotan rebels?" Tang Fang asked, concern creeping into his voice.

"Not likely," Marion replied. "Most members of the rebellion joined because they’d had enough of Colcrav’s tyranny. As for Joseph, he’s always leaned more toward being a politician. Many military commanders already disapproved of his methods, and tensions between us reached a boiling point during the time he and Gabrilles confined me. Afterward, Joseph probably planned his escape. When he heard you returned from Antarctica with a powerful force that decimated the government army’s 200,000 troops, he must have feared retribution and fled."

"As long as it doesn’t cause trouble, that’s fine," Tang Fang nodded. Then, remembering his earlier question, he pressed, "By the way, you haven’t answered my previous query yet."

"Within three days, you’ll see them yourself." Marion stroked his beard, smiling faintly. "And don’t bother going to Phillip—I’ll personally deliver a warship to you in three days."

"Playing coy, huh?" Tang Fang shot him a sideways glance. "Just call me Tang Fang from now on."

Three days. He could wait that long. Even if there's someone who escaped andremembered his face—or if government spies lurked among the rebels—Emma monitored every satellite above Krotan. No harmful information could slip through unnoticed. By the time Cain Rudolf’s fleet arrived and uncovered his identity, it would be far too late. Before leaving, he could even implant filtering programs into the satellite systems to ensure his safety.

"Tang Fang... noted."

---

Back upstairs, Shi Huaqing confirmed what they feared: Joseph had fled the base. Despite another search party sent by Marion, no trace of him was found. With no other options, they called off the pursuit.

When Housen returned to the base grumbling, scouts reported that the remnants of the government forces had lost all will to fight after learning of Aldrich’s death. Assisted by the surviving ships of the First and Third Fleets stationed in the South Sea, they evacuated en masse from the Arctic.

The following day, at Marion’s request, Tang Fang broadcast Aldrich’s demise via the orbital communication satellites, spreading the news worldwide. Instantly, the continent erupted in chaos. Hidden revolutionaries rose up in fiery defiance. The Northern Sunaru Alliance and Southern Sunaru Alliance combined their remaining forces, launching an assault on the upper reaches of the Sunaru River. They decisively routed the 408th and 508th Armored Divisions, seizing the First Legion’s base and choking Rheinstadt City’s lifeline.
