Chapter 156: The Caravan and the Road

It was early Tuesday morning, just before dawn. The moon had vanished completely from the horizon, and the sun wouldn’t rise for another hour—yet this was the darkest time of the night.

However, under the glow of thousands of whale-oil street lamps, Redwood Avenue was bathed in light so bright it seemed like day. What was usually a quiet thoroughfare buzzed with activity even before sunrise, its usual calm drowned out by the luxury of artificial illumination.

Coal, flour, spices, lanterns… crates and baskets of every size, piles of expensive tableware, mounds of ribbons and velvet fabric stacked high—it all spilled into view. Wagons laden with goods and gifts nearly choked the wide delivery lanes. These wagons stretched in long, unbroken lines, their forms weaving like entangled dragons toward Lion Manor at the end of Redwood Avenue.

“Tsk, tsk. This is the Duke of Lionheart’s investiture ceremony, after all. They certainly aren’t holding back on expenses.”

Leaning out of a lightweight two-wheeled carriage, a young woman in a pale green gown surveyed the seemingly endless procession ahead. Hit by the sharp bite of autumn wind, she quickly retreated back inside, rubbing her reddened nose and muttering, “Mistake. I should’ve dressed warmer today.”

“…”

Watching the shivering young woman blow warmth into her hands and stomp her feet impatiently, the middle-aged noblewoman seated across from her hesitated for a moment before finally speaking up.

“Your Highness, even if you’ve sneaked out, please try to maintain your composure.”

“Give me a break today—I’m too cold to care about poise,” Veronica replied with a grin, then joked further. “Honestly, if it would warm up this carriage, I’d do more than just sit here properly. I’d dance for you right now!”

After teasing the noblewoman, she adjusted her woolen shawl, pulling it over the ample curves that threatened to spill out of her bodice. Leaning against the window frame, she resumed observing the caravan outside.

“So many people have come today…”

Squinting at the nobles’ exclusive lane, counting the carriages that passed by, the striking young woman smirked faintly.

Silverbloom, Mandarin Birds, Lightshield… Hmm, just in this short while, three major noble families have already gone through. It seems the Lion inheritance is as tempting as expected. Whether they’re invited or not, everyone with any influence wants a piece of it. Today’s ceremony will be quite the spectacle.”

“…”

I don’t know how lively it’ll get later, but that dress on you is certainly drawing too much attention.

Seeing Veronica’s posture press her generous bosom perilously close to spilling out of her neckline, the noblewoman winced. She hastily pulled the princess back, scolding her sharply.

“Your Highness, please mind your decorum! Honestly… If your identity gets exposed during the ceremony and people see you dressed so immodestly, the entire royal family will be disgraced. At least find something more fitting next time!”

“Well… there’s nothing I can do about it…”

Glancing down at her gown, Veronica tugged at the pleats around her waist to show how loose it was.

“My dresses are custom-made because of my unique measurements. This is the best fit I could find in such a rush. Look how much space there is here—it’s practically falling off me!”

“…”

The gown itself was modest in design, but on her figure, it took on an almost scandalous allure. The noblewoman’s lips twitched involuntarily as she watched.

With some irritation, she snatched the shawl from Veronica’s shoulders and grabbed the tassels from the carriage cushion. She tied over a dozen knots along the edge of the shawl, creating a makeshift net to cover the exposed area.

After draping the modified shawl back over Veronica, she sighed in relief and gritted her teeth as she issued a stern warning.

“When we arrive at the estate, no matter how hot it gets, you are not to remove this shawl. Do you hear me?”

Seriously?

Veronica blinked in surprise, glancing down at the now-heavily adorned woolen shawl. Her lovely face twisted into an expression of dismay.

“This is pure wool, tightly woven too. And the manor has coal stoves burning inside. If I don’t take it off…”

“Your Highness!”

“All right, all right. I won’t take it off.”

Recognizing the non-negotiable look on the noblewoman’s face, Veronica sighed and obediently arranged the shawl properly. Then, leaning out the window again, she turned her gaze back to the flow of carriages outside.

“By the way, your suggestion to take the cargo route instead of the noble lane was brilliant. We wouldn’t have seen half as many interesting things otherwise.”

As several carriages emblazoned with triple-feathered copper crests sped past on the noble lane, Veronica began tallying the number of attending nobles. Smiling at the visibly anxious noblewoman, she remarked, “Look, even Count Pipsqueak is here. I wonder if he brought his cabbage?”

Count Pipsqueak?

Hearing this unfamiliar term, the noblewoman furrowed her brow. “Your Highness, what does ‘Count Pipsqueak’ mean?”

“It’s an insult.”

Veronica chuckled, explaining.

“The new Duke of Lionheart recently had a disagreement with this Count Pipsqueak. Upon noticing that despite holding the title of count, his coat of arms only displayed three basic plumes, the duke poked his chest emblem and mocked him mercilessly, calling him a ‘little pipsqueak.’ Nearly killed him on the spot.”

She continued with a mischievous grin. “After recovering, Count Pipsqueak retaliated by placing a cabbage in his home and declaring that the Duke of Lionheart’s title might rot faster than his cabbage.”

After enlightening the noblewoman on the origins of “Count Pipsqueak” and the “Cabbage Duke,” Veronica added with a playful twinkle in her eye, “Even though he’s about to inherit the dukedom, the Duke of Lionheart feels utterly un-aristocratic. That’s why I insisted on coming today—to see what kind of chaos he’ll stir up next.”

Ah… Her Highness is still young at heart, fond of excitement after all…

Seeing Veronica laugh so freely, shedding her usual brooding demeanor, the noblewoman felt a pang of affection. Just as she opened her mouth to offer more advice, a commotion erupted behind them.

“Clear the way!”

“Make way! Make way!”

“Royal procession! Pedestrians step aside!”

Both women turned in surprise to see the temporary barrier dividing the cargo and noble lanes forcibly pushed aside and piled rudely onto the curb.

Two teams of brightly clad guards, armed with long poles tipped with curved hooks specifically designed to clear crowds, shoved numerous wagons off the road. They widened the central path, allowing a luxurious carriage drawn by eight magnificent horses to enter smoothly.
