Thud.

Having figured out who had destroyed the kingdom, the eerie popping noise that had previously “sent away” the other rebels rang out again. The middle-aged man, still sprawled over the shopping basket-wielding woman, shuddered violently as his consciousness snapped back to the present.

Am I… temporarily replaced by my past self?

Realizing what had just happened, the man’s face darkened. He quickly reached into his coat and pulled out a small leather-bound notebook. After carefully inspecting it and confirming that its contents hadn’t been disturbed—his past self hadn’t read it—he felt a wave of dread wash over him. His complexion shifted from pale to ashen.

Grabbing the shoulders of the terrified woman beneath him, he shook her frantically, his voice trembling with urgency.

“Tell me! What did I do? What did I just do?”

This lunatic… is he even crazier now than before?

Terrified by the wild, almost predatory gleam in his eyes, the woman clutched her shopping basket tightly, contemplating whether she should bash him over the head. But fearing her blow might not be strong enough—and only provoke him further—she stammered nervously instead.

“You… you just asked who destroyed the kingdom…”

“And then what did you say? What exactly did you tell me?”

“I… I told the truth!” she wailed, her face contorted in fear.

“The kingdom was ended by Prince Leon. He announced it himself five years ago.”

“And then? What happened after I heard that?”

“You… you gritted your teeth, muttered Prince Leon’s name again, let out some kind of howl, and then… collapsed on top of me…”

“…”

It’s over.

Imagining the scene she described, the man realized his past self had likely misunderstood everything. A cold sweat broke out across his back, soaking through his shirt.

His past self had repeatedly used an anomaly to peer into the future, but each vision grew progressively worse. Though he kept struggling, deep down, despair had already begun to take hold. Given his mental state back then, stepping out of the door to hear the kingdom was utterly gone would have triggered only the darkest interpretations—occupation, ruin, annihilation.

And knowing his own stubborn, unhinged nature at the time, once he returned to his original timeline, the first thing he’d do would be to plot Prince Leon’s assassination.

I’m an idiot. A complete idiot! At least read the damn notebook before acting!

Slapping himself hard across the face twice, the man sprang to his feet, determined to find someone with time-manipulation abilities to stop his past self from making a catastrophic mistake.

But fate was cruel. No sooner had he risen than a fully-loaded shopping basket came hurtling from behind, smashing into the back of his head with a resounding thwack.

The impact was brutal, sending him sprawling face-first onto the ground. Two oversized radishes from the basket shattered upon impact.

“Oh no! My radishes!”

As the woman bent to retrieve her basket, checking if the vegetables were salvageable, the man—who had been knocked flat—began crawling forward desperately. Gasping for breath, he turned to the frightened onlookers and shouted hoarsely.

“Quick… take me… take me to the Cleansing Bureau! This world… it’s up to me to save it…”

“You wish.”

With another swing of her basket, the woman delivered another solid blow to his head. Watching him collapse motionless, unconscious, she sneered disdainfully.

“This lunatic… saving the world? Does he think he’s Prince Leon or something? Wait, who’s Prince Leon again?”

---

Eliminate him. Leon Lion. The man who ended the kingdom must be eradicated.

Back in his own body, the middle-aged man—who had been “resting” on the long table—snapped open his eyes, inhaling sharply with murderous intent. He prepared to summon all the rebels with anomalies and devise a new assassination plan.

But just as he raised his hand to activate his anomaly, a faint, irregular knocking echoed from beyond the door.

Who’s there?

Hearing the intermittent knocks, the man froze, suspicion flaring in his eyes.

His anomaly, [The Door to the Other Side], allowed him not only brief glimpses into the future but also enabled him to shift continuously among countless doors throughout the capital. Only a select few doors could reliably lead to stable destinations.

For someone to knock on [The Door to the Other Side] without his detection meant they knew which doors were “real”—and possessed the ability to locate him directly.

As the man hesitated between fleeing immediately or calling everyone back for one last gamble, an icy voice drifted through the door.

“Nathan, it’s me.”

Pushing open the now-stable door, a robed elder entered, pulling back his hood to reveal a perpetually sorrowful face.

“The locations of your doors are getting harder to find. I wandered the capital in a carriage for hours before finally locating this nearly-vanished real door.”

“It can’t be helped,” Nathan replied, visibly relieved to see it wasn’t someone from the Virgo Cleansing Bureau but rather the black-robed elder with whom he had dealings.

“That rat-loving freak from the Cleansing Bureau has eyes everywhere in the capital. If I weren’t careful, I’d have been caught long ago.”

After exhaling deeply, Nathan frowned. “When you visited last time, didn’t you say we’re all rejects, including me? That none of us met your standards, and you wouldn’t contact us again? Why are you here now?”

“I need your help.” Unperturbed by Nathan’s accusatory tone, the elder’s furrowed brows lifted slightly, his expression cold and detached.

“A few hours ago, I found something that might meet my requirements—a photograph. It’s in the desk drawer of the chief’s office at the Virgo Cleansing Bureau.”

Nathan’s eyes narrowed.

“You’ve seen firsthand how strong that woman is in certain futures. I don’t have the means to retrieve it without alerting her. That’s why I need your assistance.”

Nathan’s eyebrows rose slightly as he immediately grasped the elder’s meaning.

“You want me to move [The Door to the Other Side] behind her office door so you can slip in undetected?”

“Exactly.”

“I’ll do it—but in exchange, you’ll owe me a favor.”

After a brief pause, Nathan’s gaze sharpened.

“Temporarily enhance Phoebe’s abilities. Make it so anyone she touches vanishes completely from everyone’s memories. Can you do that?”
