Chapter 141: Colors and Lost Things
Thanks to her twin brother’s “enthusiastic assistance,” Melanie ultimately didn’t escape her punishment—and in fact, it ended up being far worse than she had anticipated.
Smack.
“Ow!”
“No whining.”
Anna closed her slender fingers, delivering another sharp slap to Melanie’s behind. Her delicate eyebrows knitted together as she growled through gritted teeth, “How old are you? And yet you’ve already learned how to frame people?”
“I—I—it wasn’t framing!”
Melanie squirmed like a worm on a hook, trying to inch forward but only managing to get yanked back by Anna’s firm grip. Catching sight of her sister’s flushed face—redder than an apple—Melanie quickly realized that the next blow would likely be even more brutal. She scrambled to defend herself.
“The religion teacher always claims he’s devout, but he couldn’t even answer what color underwear the Twelve Knights wore when they were martyred! Clearly, his piety is fake. Writing to the Church was just me asking reasonable questions.”
“You keep talking,” Anna snapped, her voice venomous.
Smack, smack, smack! Three rapid-fire slaps landed in quick succession, leaving Melanie wincing and gasping for breath. Anna paused briefly to catch her own breath before continuing her tirade. “The holy scriptures don’t write about such trivial nonsense! You’re making things up.”
“That’s not true, Sister. Melanie isn’t lying this time,” William interjected calmly. He reached into his schoolbag and pulled out a copy of the religious text, flipping through its pages with practiced ease. Holding it up for Anna to see, he explained earnestly, “Look here—it says in the Twelve Knights’ personal accounts after their ordination: ‘Our lord favors white; thus, we shall follow in white, wearing pure garments beneath and crimson robes above.’”
He paused, looking directly at Anna. “So, based on this passage, the knights’ inner garments should have been entirely white. However, out of respect for their deity, they chose to wear outer robes of different colors. But logically, their undergarments would still be white.”
“Well…” Anna hesitated, her anger visibly wavering. Her voice softened slightly as she bit her lip. “But…even so, not being able to answer a question about their clothing wouldn’t justify reporting him…”
“No sister. He did give an answer to Melanie .” William replied matter-of-factly. “After flipping through the scriptures angrily for a while, the teacher eventually answered correctly—their undergarments should indeed be white.”
“Then why did you—”
“Because white isn’t the correct answer,” William interrupted smoothly. He flipped a few more pages in the scripture and pointed to another section. “Melanie asked specifically about the color of the Twelve Knights’ undergarments during their martyrdom—not their everyday attire. According to the scriptures, they underwent three months of trials in the desert and were executed immediately upon emerging. They didn’t have time to change clothes, so…” He looked up at Anna with a completely straight face. “…their undergarments would have been yellow by then.”
…
For a moment, there was utter silence. Anna’s face went pale, then red, then purple, and finally settled on an alarming shade of blackish-purple as veins throbbed visibly on her forehead.
Seizing the opportunity, Melanie leapt off the couch, pulling up her pants as she bolted straight toward Leon. “Big Brother, save me!”
Too late. Leon sidestepped Melanie’s desperate lunge, dodging her flailing arms with practiced agility. Giving her a sympathetic glance, he stepped aside and gestured toward Anna.
“Sorry, kiddo. No saving you this time. Look at your sister’s expression—if I interfere now, she might decide my butt needs some attention too. Just take your medicine like a good girl.”
...
After a chaotic chase scene filled with screams and pleas for mercy, Leon finally intervened when it seemed Anna had vented most of her frustration. Placing a gentle hand on her shoulder, he said soothingly, “Alright, alright. Take a break—you’re panting.”
“But I’m still mad enough to hit her again,” Anna huffed, though her tone lacked conviction.
“Yes, yes, go ahead—but let’s hold off for now. We can continue the lesson later if needed,” Leon placated, feigning sternness as he turned to glare at Melanie. Once Anna seemed somewhat mollified, he gently rubbed her back to help her catch her breath, given her weakened lungs. Softly, he added, “However, I’m pressed for time—I need to head to the office soon, and it’s freezing outside. Could you grab me a couple of blankets first?”
“You’re just protecting her,” Anna muttered accusingly, shooting him a glare. Still, she extricated herself from his grasp and stomped over to the wardrobe, yanking open the creaky doors to search for blankets.
Leon gave Melanie a subtle nod, signaling her to make herself scarce. As she tiptoed into the other room, Leon slowly followed Anna into the bedroom. Watching her rummage through the closet, he spoke softly. “Honestly, you don’t need to worry too much. Melanie may be mischievous, but she doesn’t bully others—she’s just stubborn and hates losing. And William’s the same way—he’s clever but harmless. They might not be easy to handle, but deep down, they’re both good kids… Anna?”
“Huh?” Startled by his words, Anna froze momentarily before resuming her search. Keeping her back to him, she fumbled with the blankets, nodding distractedly. “Yeah…yeah, they’re not bad kids. They’re just young and don’t know any better yet. They’ll grow out of it… Oh, do you just need blankets? Or should I pack a sweater too?”
“The blankets will do. It’s warm enough at the office.”
Leon frowned slightly, noting the slight tremor in her movements. Without hesitation, he asked, “Anna, what’s bothering you?”
“It’s nothing,” she replied quickly, shaking her head. Turning around with two neatly folded blankets in hand, she forced a smile. “I just realized I lost something and am worried I might’ve left it behind during the move.”
“Ah…”
If this had been Leon from a month ago, he might have fallen for her evasive response. But now, having grown adept at reading people—even without resorting to the black goat’s soul vision—he could tell Anna was hiding something significant.
“Why don’t you look for it? If you can’t find it, I’ll accompany you back to Veteran’s Alley in a few days. We’ll search together.”
“Okay…”
After packing the blankets into a bag, Leon walked to the door and picked up the shopping bag resting on the shoe rack. His fingertips brushed lightly against the curved horn tucked inside. With deliberate slowness, he began putting on his shoes, his voice soft and measured.
“Anna, the thing you lost earlier—is it the family photo with just you and our parents?”
…
The question hung heavy in the air. Through his soul vision, Leon saw Anna’s spirit flare with panic and fear. Continuing to lace his shoes at a leisurely pace, he spoke gently.
“In truth, my birthday isn’t actually the date you told me—it’s possible I’m not even biologically related to our parents. And you…you’re not really my sister, are you?”
