Chapter 167: Are They Really Trying to Steal Our Car?
Wang Ping shoved the photo frame back to the bottom of the backpack and crawled out of the hideout, his face flushed with embarrassment. He couldn’t stop mentally berating himself for being such a creep.
No one else would ever know that, in addition to the lipstick mark already on the photo, there was now a tiny imprint left by none other than the "honey badger."
Meanwhile, miles away at the foot of a mountain, Gu Lang lounged against the flattened seatback of a Jeep Wrangler, staring pensively at the dust and small claw marks scattered across the rear seat. Beside him, on the passenger seat, a recently awakened wolf pup yipped incessantly.
"Oh, knock it off!" Gu Lang groaned, exasperated. "Your brother’s gone off somewhere—I don’t know where either!" He rummaged around for the bottle used to feed the pup, shaking the half-empty container of milk before offering it to the little wolf. "It’s a bit cold, but make do for now. Once the sandstorm clears, I’ll warm some up for you."
"Woof! Woof!"
"Stop whining! No matter how much you bark, he can’t hear you!" Gu Lang snapped, then muttered under his breath, "Honestly, such a big guy... even if he is a honey badger, why does he have to be so irresponsible? Look at this windstorm—it’s insane out there. What’s he doing running around?"
"Woof!"
Little Four swatted the bottle away with its paw and continued to howl stubbornly.
"If you keep this up, I’ll toss you outside!"
"Woof! Woof woof!"
The man and the wolf glared at each other from their respective ends of the seat.
Just then, a notification sound chimed from beneath the blanket covering the dashboard. Gu Lang froze, lifting the blanket to reveal a yacht graphic flashing across the screen.
"Uh… thanks, uh…" He squinted at the username. "Thanks, 'DiscoFox,' for gifting the yacht..."
"Haha!"
"I knew it—this is the only thing that could grab Gu Lang’s attention."
The barrage of comments scrolled past, leaving Gu Lang glaring at the screen. He had completely forgotten he wasn’t wearing sunglasses, his puffy eyes now fully exposed to the camera.
"Who’s Gu Lang arguing with?"
"It’s definitely not Boss—he doesn’t have the guts."
"Yeah, exactly. He just bullies our Little Four."
"Wait till Little Four grows up. Then we’ll see who bullies whom."
"Bullshit!" Gu Lang exploded, slamming his fist against the seat. "Even if he were here, I’d still kick his ass!"
"Woof! Woof!"
Gu Lang leaned casually on the passenger seat as the pup, ignored, toddled over on stubby legs. It clamped its tiny jaws onto his sleeve and began tugging ferociously, growling adorably.
"Aww, Little Four is so cute!"
"Is it hungry?"
"No, it’s bored!" Gu Lang sighed, grabbing the scruff of the pup’s neck. "You’re all bark and no bite when Boss feeds you, aren’t you?"
A comment popped up in the chat:
"Boss smears honey on the pacifier before feeding him."
"Huh? Really?" Gu Lang dropped the wriggling pup and started rummaging through the car. "Where did Boss hide the honey?"
He opened the glove compartment, finding nothing but honey badger’s tablet, stylus, a familiar lighter, and half a pack of cigarettes. Gu Lang remembered that Boss rarely smoked these days. Sighing, he closed the drawer and turned to search the backseat.
Finally, buried deep in a large backpack filled with jerky and snacks, he found a small piece of honeycomb wrapped in a plastic bag.
After Wang Ping’s relentless efforts, what was once a football-sized hive had been reduced to this palm-sized fragment. If it weren’t for the little wolf’s stubborn refusal to drink milk without honey, even this scrap might not have survived.
Behind him, the pup continued to yowl impatiently. Gu Lang, undeterred, reached into the bag while turning to reassure it. "Hold on, hold on—it’ll be ready soon!"
As he touched the honeycomb, a sharp pain shot through his hand.
Unbeknownst to Gu Lang, the stolen hive had contained numerous half-developed larvae. Now, fully grown bees squirmed beneath his fingers. Startled, one stung him reflexively.
"OWWW!!"
Little Four stopped mid-yowl, staring wide-eyed at Gu Lang, who was clutching his hand and howling. The pup tilted its head, confused. How had this human managed to mimic a honey badger’s cry? It had tried endlessly and never succeeded.
One defining feature of sandstorms is their brevity.
From above, the vast Gobi Desert revealed a stunning sight. A massive, ring-shaped cloud of dust split the landscape into two parts. To the west, near the base of Chitong Mountain, a dense plume of dust still lingered, spreading over part of the desert. To the east, however, the dust had begun to settle, revealing clear skies devoid of clouds. The sun blazed down mercilessly.
Anna emerged from the swirling sand, gun in hand, only to stumble backward as a bullet grazed her arm.
A muffled grunt echoed in the wind as she rolled behind a mound of earth for cover.
Through the thinning haze, she spotted several poachers huddled in a concealed pit, camouflaged expertly.
"Damn it," Anna cursed under her breath. That pit was originally dug by another group of poachers to hide their vehicle—a detail she hadn’t anticipated they’d exploit.
She winced, pressing her left arm tightly. Blood seeped between her fingers. Two bullets were lodged in her vest, but her arm bore a fresh gash.
Three hundred meters east of the poachers’ hideout, two men stared dumbfounded toward the source of the commotion.
Crouched in a shallow pit, covered by a canvas tarp, they blended seamlessly with the terrain. Before them, a gray-furred rabbit lay tethered and motionless, seemingly resigned to its fate.
Surrounding the rabbit was an enormous iron trap partially buried in the ground. Its metal frame gleamed ominously, visible in patches where the sand had shifted. A rope tied to the trigger mechanism snaked along a groove to the men’s hiding spot, held firmly in one man’s grip.
Their faces were streaked with dirt, cracked from dehydration, and coated with layers of grime.
"Shit, they’re not trying to steal our car, are they?" one man muttered nervously.
"Don’t be stupid," the other scoffed, smacking him lightly. "What’s more valuable—the car or the eagle? Relax, they’ve got guns, but so do we!"
At that moment, a piercing cry sliced through the sky. Both men instantly fell silent, their eyes fixed on the rabbit. Forgetting the chaos unfolding a hundred meters away, they braced themselves, gripping their weapons tightly.
