Chapter 166: The Photograph

The dull beige of tactical boots appeared in front of a black canvas bag.

Anna held her gun aloft, scanning the surroundings. Seeing no one else, she lowered her gaze with a frown.

First, there was the box containing the sniper rifle, and now this mysterious canvas bag had shown up right outside her hiding spot. It gave her the strange sensation that someone was secretly delivering gifts to her.

She cautiously nudged the canvas bag with her pistol. Inside, several 9mm magazines and two USP handguns lay jumbled together. Beneath them were bundles of homemade detonators and bullet pouches. Compared to all this, Anna felt almost underprepared, like a country bumpkin at a high-tech convention.

"Wow!"

Her exclamation slipped out before she could stop it. She holstered her pistol at her back and reached into the bag, pulling out one of the handguns. She popped the magazine and inspected it. The gleaming bullets nestled inside made her feel as though she'd just traded a slingshot for a cannon.

"I love this gift!"

Muttering to herself, she strapped both handguns to thigh holsters, then picked up the canvas bag and ran back to where she'd left the sniper rifle. Without ceremony, she dropped the bag.

Clang…

The clatter of magazines echoed inside the bag. Wang Ping, clutching a bundle of detonators, nearly groaned as he was jostled hard enough to break a sweat.

"Good grief, talk about rough handling!"

From deep within the swirling sandstorm came the rumble of an engine. The Humvee was about to roar to life. Anna hurriedly assembled the sniper rifle, set up its bipod, and dropped to the ground, aiming toward the vehicle.

Behind her, nestled in the foam padding of the rifle case, were five armor-piercing rounds, each the length of a palm and marked with black tips. Two fully loaded magazines sat nearby, their contents unknown.

There wasn't time for scrutiny. Grabbing one magazine, she slapped it into place and peered through the scope, searching for the Humvee amidst the chaos of wind and dust.

"Wind speed... distance... hmm..."

She muttered under her breath, completely unaware that a small, furry head had quietly emerged from the canvas bag beside her, watching her with an odd sort of fascination.

Inside the Humvee, the man in the driver's seat wiped beads of sweat from his forehead. He touched two copper wires together; sparks flew, and the engine roared back to life. This time, his hands steady, he twisted the wires securely. With a triumphant shout of "Yes!" the Humvee surged forward.

But barely fifty meters later, just as he pressed the accelerator, the sniper rifle cracked from a hundred meters away. Those inside the vehicle felt as if a sledgehammer had slammed into the hood. The front end buckled, sending the Humvee skidding sideways. A shattered wheel hub rolled past the windshield, leaving the occupants staring in shock.

"Sniper!"

The man in the passenger seat screamed in despair. The window shattered, showering him with dust kicked up by the collision, turning him into a grimy figure coated head to toe in dirt.

"Anna! Anna!"

Five kilometers away, beneath a weathered rock formation, Luke pressed his earpiece and shouted, "What’s happening? Why did I hear sniper fire?"

After a long pause, Anna’s voice crackled through the comm, accompanied by the staccato of automatic gunfire and chaotic shouting.

"Captain, these guys are pushing inward with clear intent. They’re mercenaries! Uh... yeah, I fired the sniper shot."

"Where did you get a sniper rifle? And didn’t I tell you not to kill anyone? We’re in China!" Luke barked.

"I found it!"

Anna’s response left Luke momentarily speechless. Her next words only deepened his frown.

"They’re heavily armed, unlike those amateurs we’ve dealt with before. If we let them go, they’ll come back with reinforcements. Then we’ll be the ones on the defensive!"

"Hey, Anna," another voice chimed in over the comms. "Do you need backup?"

Before Anna could reply, Luke cut in. "Park, stay put where you are in case they try breaking through on the other side. I’m heading to support Anna."

By now, the occupants of the Humvee had spilled out, firing blindly in Anna’s direction as they retreated—not toward where they’d come from, but deeper east into the Gobi Desert.

Anna hoisted the sniper rifle and sprinted after them, kicking the canvas bag toward her hideout as she went.

The boot connected solidly. The honey badger—aka Wang Ping—nearly choked on his own indignation as he tumbled into the pit, clutching a bundle of explosives that could have reduced him to ash. Magazines spilled out around him as he landed with a groan.

"Help… me…"

It took a while for Wang Ping to recover, muttering darkly about how he’d never realized Anna could be so brutal.

As the sound of gunfire faded, Wang Ping stood in the sheltered depression, surveying the area.

The hideout was little more than a waist-deep pit reinforced with wooden beams and covered with loose soil for camouflage. Stark and barren, it nonetheless carried a faint aroma—though whether real or imagined, Wang Ping couldn’t say.

Besides the overturned canvas bag, a backpack lay open in the corner. Unable to resist his curiosity, Wang Ping shuffled closer and peeked inside. Alongside a military blanket and first-aid kit, he found something unexpected: a makeup pouch. Instantly, he pictured Anna applying a face mask while peering through binoculars, keeping watch.

“This… well, the winds here are harsh. Dry skin isn’t great,” he reasoned silently, trying to justify her possession of such items.

He rifled through the bag again, then froze.

“Hiss… Going through someone’s stuff like this feels kinda creepy…”

Wang Ping set the makeup pouch aside, scratching his head as he prepared to leave. But his eye caught sight of a corner of a photo frame sticking out from beneath the blanket.

“Whose picture is it?” His nosiness ignited like wildfire.

“I’ll just take a quick look. One glance, and I’m done!”

Even as he rationalized, his hand moved swiftly, snatching the frame from the bag.

Under the hardened plastic cover, Wang Ping saw a familiar face grinning brightly—his own. Beside him, Anna’s eyes curved upward in a smile. Both wore mosquito-repellent camouflage paint. Behind them stretched a jungle backdrop, and resting on Wang Ping’s shoulder was a large, hairy hand—not Anna’s.

Wang Ping scratched his cheek thoughtfully. If memory served, he and Anna had never taken a photo together. This must have been cropped from a group photo of Team Three. That hand belonged to Vet.

“Hehehe…”

Lost in thought, Wang Ping’s shoulders shook slightly as a mischievous grin spread across his face.

But as he tilted the frame to get a better look, the light revealed something odd—a smudge on the surface of the plastic, directly over his face.

Bringing the frame closer, Wang Ping examined it against the light streaming through the entrance. There, imprinted clearly on the transparent plastic, was the unmistakable mark of a lipstick kiss.

“Eh…”
