Chapter 158: Did Gu Lang Cry?
On the edge of the western grove, within clear sight, a swarm of bees buzzed industriously among wildflowers. Hanging beneath an upturned rock at the periphery was a football-sized hive, glistening with golden honey.
Wang Ping’s eyes turned red—not from tears, but from sheer, primal hunger.
In that moment, it was as if another soul had taken over Honey Badger’s brain, filling him with an uncontrollable craving for honey. He needed it. Now.
“Knock knock!”
“Knock knock!”
Leaping up from the passenger seat, Honey Badger hopped impatiently, his tiny paws smacking against the car door like Morse code.
“What? You need to pee or something?”
Gu Lang slammed on the brakes and turned to look at Wang Ping. But by then, Honey Badger had already hit the window button, leapt out of the Jeep, and bolted straight toward the grove without so much as a backward glance.
“Be careful… don’t fall…”
Gu Lang’s warning trailed off as he watched the small creature vanish into the distance. Shaking his head, he glanced back at the rear seat. There, wrapped in a blanket amid piles of gear, lay the motionless lump that was the wolf pup.
“Tsk, little wolf, don’t follow your big brother’s example. Look at him—already a grown up honey badger, but still running around like a maniac.”
It seemed that sparing the beating during today’s lesson had inflated Gu Lang’s ego. His tone dripped with smugness, and a smirk played across his face.
The live chat exploded with endless speechless emojis. Fans who knew Wang Ping well were deeply concerned about Gu Lang’s current state of mind. Others, eager for drama, egged him on, hoping he’d double down and teach Honey Badger another “lesson”—so they could enjoy the inevitable beating afterward.
But less than five minutes later, the mood in the chat shifted dramatically.
Some viewers had been keeping tabs on Honey Badger’s antics. And inspired by yesterday’s encounter with the wild yaks near Lake Selincuo, Gu Lang had rigged the cameras differently before setting off this time. The front-facing camera now pointed inside the car, while the rearview mirror cam had been relocated to the side mirror on the passenger side.
Through this new angle, everyone saw what was happening: Honey Badger sprinting back toward the Jeep, clutching something larger than his own head. Behind him, a dark cloud of angry bees swarmed relentlessly.
“Gu Lang, if I were you, I’d roll up the windows right now.”
“Run! Go go go!”
“I’ve already closed my eyes—I can’t watch!”
“Karma’s a bitch, Gu Lang. That mouth of yours…”
“Streamer, step on it! Before Boss comes back!”
“Holy crap, that swarm looks lethal! One sting and you’re dead!”
Unaware of the chaos outside, Gu Lang sat lost in thought, pondering whether to find a vet for the wolf pup once they reached Nyima County. Then, a faint buzzing noise crept into his ears, growing louder by the second.
Instinctively glancing out the window, his expression froze.
“Oh sht!”
His scalp tingled as panic set in. Fumbling clumsily, he hit the wrong button, opening both the driver’s side window and the passenger one simultaneously.
“Boss… seriously, f…”
On the verge of tears over his own incompetence, Gu Lang abandoned all pretense of helping Wang Ping. Shifting into gear, he prepared to floor it.
By then, Wang Ping had reached the Jeep. With a flying leap, he hurled himself through the open passenger window, half-shoving the massive hive inside just as Gu Lang hit the gas. The Jeep fishtailed wildly along the riverbank, kicking up dust.
BANG!
The hive tumbled onto the seat, falling apart. Meanwhile, Wang Ping clung desperately to the window frame, his body flapping like a flag in the wind as the vehicle sped away.
BUZZZZZ!
Bees poured out of the shattered hive, pouring into the car through the open windows. The swarm engulfed them, stinging indiscriminately.
“AHHHHH!”
“OH GOD NOOOO!”
“HELP ME!”
“BOSS!!! WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOUUUU!”
Gu Lang’s screams filled the cabin as the Jeep swerved erratically in an S-shaped pattern along the riverbank.
After much effort, Wang Ping managed to scramble inside, clawing his way onto the dashboard. Peering over, he saw Gu Lang frantically swatting at the bees, completely forgetting about driving.
Slapping his forehead, Wang Ping realized the gravity of his mistake. Grabbing the broken hive, he began tearing it apart layer by layer, searching for the queen bee.
Here’s the thing about bees: each colony has only one queen. All the worker bees revolve around her. Beekeepers often trap the queen in a box to prevent the entire swarm from fleeing.
After several sticky, honey-coated minutes, Wang Ping finally located the queen—a grotesquely bloated insect nestled deep within the hive. Without hesitation, he grabbed her and chucked her out the window.
Instantly, the pursuing swarm halted mid-air, clustering around their queen on the riverbank. Some bees flew out of the car to rejoin the group, while others remained stubbornly attached to Gu Lang’s clothes—or worse, crawled aimlessly across the remnants of the hive.
Abandoning the wreckage, Wang Ping jumped onto the dashboard. Balancing precariously, he used one paw to steer while batting away bees with the other.
Gu Lang, meanwhile, was no longer screaming—he was cursing. A torrent of colorful language streamed from his lips, each word more creative than the last.
Thankfully, due to the cold weather, Gu Lang had worn a thick jacket when they set out, leaving only his head and hands exposed. While this minimized the risk of widespread stings, the unprotected areas bore the brunt of the attack.
From his perch on the dashboard, Wang Ping spotted the blanket-wrapped wolf pup in the backseat. Leaping over, he scooped up the bundle and returned to the front, dumping the pup onto the passenger seat. He then draped the blanket over Gu Lang’s head.
Reacting instinctively, Gu Lang pulled the blanket tight around his face, using it to fend off the remaining bees.
“Damn… Buddy, I’m sorry…”
Even Wang Ping couldn’t believe what he’d done. Him—wise, brilliant Honey Badger—had somehow managed to royally screw things up for his teammate.
“This is all YOUR fault!” Gu Lang spat, glaring daggers.
Glancing down at his belly, Wang Ping raised a paw to slap it—but stopped short upon noticing the sticky residue coating his claws. On impulse, he licked it.
“Hmm… not bad…”
KLANG!
The Jeep hit a fallen log, jolting violently. Sensing the sharp turn ahead, Wang Ping quickly grabbed the wheel, peering anxiously at the road.
“Whimper…”
A soft sound came from beside him. Honey Badger’s ears twitched, and his furry face twisted into an awkward grimace.
“No way… Did Gu Lang cry?”
