Chapter 170: The Battle of Somalon (Part 2)

All hope was sinking fast. To the defenders, their forces were lambs awaiting slaughter. It wouldn’t be long before Somalon fell entirely—and then the airbase would follow.

"It’s them… it’s them…" Michelson muttered under his breath. In his forty-plus years as a soldier, he had cultivated nerves of steel, unshakable even in the face of catastrophe. Yet today, for the first time, he felt utterly powerless.

He recognized these soldiers—the same mysterious and formidable force that had appeared during the Battle of Apalus. Brave Bastion had been reduced to "Shameful Bastion" under their assault, with nearly an entire division of the Third Legion’s vanguard routed.

And now, after lying low for so long, they had reemerged here, unleashing destruction upon his very doorstep.

Michelson felt a chill creep up his spine, his hands numb and his back cold. The flames flickering on the monitors cast a shadow over his heart—a shadow of despair.

Aldrich had once shared fragments of intelligence about this unit. According to experts, their military technology surpassed Krotan forces by one or two centuries. Luckily, their numbers were few; otherwise, obliterating the Krotan army would have been as simple as squashing an ant.

After the Battle of Apalus, they vanished without a trace—until now. No one expected them to resurface in Antarctica, targeting the Krotan military’s most critical airbase.

"General, think of something! At this rate, all our fighters will be destroyed!" The damage control officer turned anxiously, sweat pouring down his face. Behind him, the monitor displayed steadily rising aircraft losses.

"Michelson, what about that? Where is it?" Saxton Leonard suddenly seemed to recall something.

"Urgh…" Michelson sighed deeply, slumping back into his seat.

On the surveillance screens, plasma bolts streaked across the sky, reducing turrets to cracked husks of twisted metal. The forty Hellion split into two groups: one wreaking fiery havoc between the airstrip and hangars, the other systematically dismantling missile systems surrounding the base.

Within half an hour, the airbase's defenses teetered on the brink of collapse. Soldiers and staff retreated underground, seeking refuge from the apocalyptic chaos above. Nobody in their right mind would willingly step into such carnage.

---

While Michelson and his team were at a loss, Tang Fang had already circled around to Somalon’s facility.

Under Arroz’s leadership, the Terran bio-units had seized control of most areas, leaving only scattered pockets of resistance.

Somalon’s aerospace research institute lay twenty floors below ground. As soon as Tang Fang initiated the attack, the facility’s security measures activated: defensive mechanisms sprang to life, security robots mobilized, blast doors sealed shut, and elevators ceased operation.

When Tang Fang arrived, Arroz and several Marines stood before the elevator shaft.

The closed elevator doors bore a gaping hole carved out by Judicator grenades. Peering down, the dark abyss of the shaft stretched endlessly below.

"Let’s go." Without hesitation, Arroz leapt into the shaft, gripping the cables and sliding down swiftly. Tang Fang followed, along with five other Marines.

About ten minutes later, they reached the twentieth sublevel. Commanding Zealots to smash through the elevator doors, the group jumped out into the corridor.

The halls were deserted. Thick blast doors segmented the research area into countless modules. Tang Fang overloaded the surveillance equipment, then directed the Zealots to slice through the half-meter-thick gates like cutting tofu.

Inside, security robots unleashed a volley of bullets. The Zealots didn’t flinch; their plasma shields absorbed every round, melting the casings into molten iron.

Two sharp gunshots rang out.

Electrically charged metal spikes zipped through gaps, striking the robots with a high-frequency pulse that instantly fried their central processing units.

"Commander, floor scan complete. Route planned." Emma’s voice echoed simultaneously with a holographic map appearing in Tang Fang’s mind.

"Understood." With a nod, Tang Fang transmitted the route to Arroz and ordered the Zealots to lead the way toward the marked data hub.

They encountered several waves of resistance along the path, but each skirmish was effortlessly resolved through coordination between the Zealots and the squad. When the final gate opened, Tang Fang recalled the Zealots and stepped into a massive hall—hundreds of meters wide and dozens of meters tall.

Rows of colossal computer arrays lined the space, flanked by various calculation devices and imaging instruments. At the center stood a superconducting quantum computer. Silver light pulsed through its circular chip modules, while multicolored spectral curves twisted and rotated across display panels, creating a dazzling spectacle.

In the past, this data center would have been bustling with white-coated researchers. But now, the vast room held only one person: Saxton Leonard, the company’s director—and Marquis Cain’s brother-in-law.

Seeing Tang Fang and his team breach the entrance, Saxton’s pupils contracted. He quickly tapped a command into the touch panel, then turned to glare coldly at the intruders through the reinforced glass chamber.

"Who are you? How dare you attack the government forces! This is an unforgivable crime punishable by death!" Despite his words, there was no mistaking the quaver in his voice. Anyone who’d seen the battlefield knew these audacious warriors wouldn’t fear imperial law.

Monya’s laws were merely tools used by the nobility to deceive and oppress the masses. Only unarmed civilians feared such threats—not someone capable of crushing Krotan armies. Saxton’s bluster served two purposes: bolstering his own courage and buying time.

Tang Fang saw right through him. Glancing briefly at the deletion progress bar on the main screen, he casually pulled the trigger of his C-14 Impaler rifle.

A silver streak shot forth, striking the sealed glass chamber with a sharp "ding" before ricocheting off.

"Hmm?" Tang Fang frowned involuntarily. The C-14 Impaler, capable of piercing armor equivalent to 20mm cannon shells, had failed to penetrate the transparent barrier.
