Chapter 93: A Pure Love, Part 2

“…”

Lin Tian didn’t mind the teasing. He could handle himself just fine.

“But there’s one more thing,” Su Ran said earnestly, leaning closer. “As a girl, I feel like I should warn you.”

“What?”

“I think girls tend to prefer guys who are… a bit more dominant.”

She spoke with conviction. “Whether or not you’re going for the whole ‘pure love’ vibe, when it comes to certain moments, you need to take charge.”

Lin Tian didn’t bother telling her that he and Gan Yanyu already had a safe word worked out between them.

The bell rang, signaling the start of class, and with it, the conversation came to an end. But as Lin Tian sat through the lesson, his mind kept circling back to Su Ran’s words. Some of what she’d said made sense—especially the part about kissing Gan Yanyu. Maybe he’d ask her about it another time.

---

At lunchtime, Lin Tian stepped out into the hallway only to see Gan Yanyu approaching, arms full of books. After all the talk during break, seeing her now stirred something in him—a faint ripple of emotion he couldn’t quite ignore. He raised his hand, ready to call out to her.

But before he could say anything—

Gan Yanyu walked right past him without so much as a glance.

Is she ignoring me?

Lin Tian turned around, watching her disappear down the hall without even looking back. Just as confusion settled over him, Su Ran appeared out of nowhere, sprinting toward Gan Yanyu and stopping her in her tracks. With a warm smile, Su Ran began chatting animatedly, while Gan Yanyu hastily covered her mouth, shaking her head vigorously.

“…”

Lin Tian stood frozen, utterly baffled.

Once Gan Yanyu was gone, Su Ran skipped back over to him, hands clasped behind her back, grinning ear to ear. “Mission accomplished!”

“What did you find out?” Lin Tian asked cautiously.

“She likes you.”

“Huh??”

Lin Tian’s eyes widened. “She actually said that?”

“Nope. I asked if she liked you, and she said no.”

“Then…?”

“A girl saying ‘no’ means ‘yes.’ Duh.” Su Ran rolled her eyes dramatically.

“…”

Lin Tian realized then that Su Ran wasn’t exactly operating within the realm of normal human behavior either. If some random stranger had come up to him asking if he liked someone, he might’ve kicked them halfway across the courtyard by now.

“This has nothing to do with you,” Lin Tian said firmly. “Stay out of it.”

“Aww…” Su Ran pouted, clearly disappointed. “Let me live vicariously through you two! I’m totally shipping you guys!”

“…”

Lin Tian immediately regretted ever mentioning his feelings for Gan Yanyu. At this rate, Su Ran would probably push him into confessing tomorrow—and then it’d be straight into the climactic choice scene from some cheesy romance drama.

“Oh, right!” Su Ran added brightly. “I got her WeChat ID too.”

“You better not send her any weird messages,” Lin Tian warned. “Though you can mention the kissing thing.”

“Relax, I won’t do anything,” Su Ran assured him. “I’ll just feel things out for you.”

---

Later, as Lin Tian left school and waited at the traffic light, he finally spotted Gan Yanyu ahead.

“Lin Tian, you’re so slow,” she muttered under her breath.

“Why did you pretend not to know me earlier?” he asked bluntly.

“Ah…” Gan Yanyu looked genuinely apologetic. “I was worried people would misunderstand.”

“…”

Right. Of course.

On her very first day back at school, she was already acting like they were strangers. Was this how it was going to be? Would she introduce him as “just a streamer who plays piano” next?

“You’re pretty popular around here, you know,” Gan Yanyu said, twirling a strand of hair nervously. “If I talk to you openly, people will assume we’re dating, and that wouldn’t be good for you.”

“…”

Fair enough. Lin Tian should’ve seen this coming.

“That kind of stuff doesn’t really matter,” he tried to argue.

“It does matter,” Gan Yanyu insisted, leaning forward slightly. “Take Su Ran, for example. She likes you, doesn’t she? She even came up to me asking if I liked you.”

“She doesn’t mean it like that,” Lin Tian protested weakly.

These fangirls were truly a menace.

“And besides…” Gan Yanyu added softly, “You didn’t call out to me when you came to my classroom earlier today, did you?”

Her words hit their mark, leaving Lin Tian speechless. It was true—he hadn’t wanted rumors to affect her life either. Still, hearing her say it stung a little.

“As partners, we need to hold ourselves accountable, especially in front of others,” Gan Yanyu said earnestly. “It’s important.”

“Fine,” Lin Tian relented. “But pretending we don’t know each other is unnecessary. People will figure it out eventually. Let’s just act like regular friends at school.”

“Okay.” Gan Yanyu nodded. “Oh, by the way, tomorrow’s Saturday. Let’s go visit Grandpa.”

“Visit Grandpa?” Lin Tian blinked.

He’d been meaning to bring it up for a while. The old man had treated him well, and Lin Tian felt obligated to check on him. But given everything else going on—the upcoming concert, Gan Yanyu’s return to school—he hadn’t wanted to risk upsetting her further.

“Yeah, let’s go,” Gan Yanyu said. “We can pick up some supplies too. Our base project can finally get started.”

And just like that, Gan Yanyu’s first day back ended quietly, almost anticlimactically.

---

That evening, Lin Tian sat down at home only for his phone to buzz with a new message. He opened WeChat and saw a notification from that certain mysterious person.

“So you’re Lin Tian?”

The tone was bold, almost confrontational. Had she spent the entire day avoiding his messages because using her phone in class would’ve gotten her caught? She reminded him of those tough-talking middle-school delinquents who always jumped to defend their friends, adding random acquaintances to group chats just to rally everyone against some perceived injustice. Usually, raising cigarette prices by two bucks was enough to shut them up.

“Who’s asking?” Lin Tian replied dryly.

“You’re not worthy of knowing my name yet.”

“All I need is a yes or no—are you Lin Tian?”

After sending those messages, the sender leaned back in her chair, chin resting on her palm as she admired her perfectly manicured nails.

What kind of person is worthy of being Gan Yanyu’s partner? she wondered idly.

Three minutes passed without a response. Growing impatient, she picked up her phone again and sent a single “?”
