Chapter 126: Exposed
"..."
Damn it. All I wanted to do was "call in a favor," testing the waters for access rights to an anomaly, and here you are eyeing me like some kind of prize...
Leon pressed his hand against the goat's head, checking the soul state of the female prisoner. To his surprise, her invitation had been genuine. He sighed, shaking his head.
"Forget it. I’m not interested in your rebellion. Your methods are way too extreme for my taste."
"..."
After Leon’s words hung in the air, the number of people feeling exasperated in the interrogation room doubled from one to two.
Too extreme? Us? The woman thought bitterly. In all these years, we’ve carried out over two hundred attacks, and the number of high-ranking officials we’ve killed doesn’t even come close to what you wiped out in a single night. And yet you have the audacity to call us extreme?
The two sat in silence, each finding the other utterly absurd. Finally, after what felt like an eternity, Leon broke the quiet.
"Since you already know about what happened at the Lion estate, I’ll cut to the chase. I’m very interested in that bandage of yours. I want your approval so I can gain usage rights to it."
"Fine," she said without hesitation, her voice steady. "If you let me go, I’ll renounce my claim on the bandage immediately and hand it over to you."
"That’s impossible," Leon replied flatly, shaking his head.
"Setting aside the charge of attempting to assassinate the princess—Isha showed me part of your file. Over the years you’ve joined the rebellion, you’ve participated in numerous attacks, causing the deaths of at least dozens of innocent people..."
"So... you’re saying I deserve this?" Her tone sharpened as her eyes locked onto him, cold and piercing.
"Sure, if you want to play it that way, why don’t you grab the kingdom’s noble registry and start going down the list? Check every aristocrat against the laws of the realm. If there’s even one major noble family with fewer crimes than me, I’ll bash my head against the wall right here and now."
"You misunderstand. I’m not accusing you—that’s not my job." Leon shook his head calmly.
"What I’m saying is, your accumulated charges already warrant the death penalty. So technically, I don’t need to save you. I just wait until you’re executed for your crimes, and then the bandage becomes mine anyway."
"..."
By the time Leon finished speaking, the woman’s face had turned an ugly shade of red.
She’d expected him to lecture her like the female cop—some spiel about how victims eventually become perpetrators when they harm innocents. She’d spent days preparing counterarguments for that exact scenario. But instead, this man was brutally pragmatic, sidestepping her accusations with such ease that it felt like throwing a flirtatious glance at someone blind to charm.
"So why are you even here then?" she snapped, glaring at the lean, handsome figure before her.
"I’m getting the death sentence either way. Why not just sit back and wait for me to die?"
"Because that would take too long." Leon’s expression remained placid.
"As one of the conspirators in the assassination attempt on the princess, you won’t be executed anytime soon. Those who could expedite the case are tied up dealing with the fallout from the Lion massacre. Who knows when they’ll get around to you? And frankly, I don’t want to wait that long."
"So whether I agree or not, the only difference is saving you some time, huh?"
"Yes."
"..."
Staring at Leon, who looked younger than the policewoman but radiated an infuriating air of unshakable resolve, the prisoner felt a deep sense of futility wash over her. After a moment of intense scrutiny, she huffed loudly.
"Alright, fine. You took down Bobby Lion and destroyed the Lions. Sure, you avenged me. But I’m no grateful martyr. Besides, if you hadn’t interfered, I would’ve killed that policewoman on the carriage and marched straight into the Lion estate to strangle Bobby myself!"
Her anger bubbled over as she glared daggers at him. "And if we’re keeping score, you’re practically my enemy. So why should I help you? If you want the damn bandage, wait for me to die and claim it then!"
"..."
Of course, nothing’s ever that simple. Guess it’s time to pull out the big guns.
Leon sighed inwardly, then leaned forward slightly, his voice soft but deliberate.
"Your daughter… she’s still alive, isn’t she?"
The prisoner stiffened instantly, her composure cracking. Leon continued gently, almost conversationally. "Though her records mark her as deceased—cause of death listed as starvation and illness—you rarely mention her when talking about revenge. Instead, you talk about 'my husband' or 'what happened to our family.' Doesn’t that strike you as odd?"
He paused, letting his words sink in. "Either you loved your husband far more than your daughter—so much so that she doesn’t even merit a passing mention—or your daughter is actually alive. That’s why she slips your mind whenever you think about vengeance. Am I wrong?"
"..."
You conniving bastard. Knowing there was no point in trying to deceive him, the prisoner abandoned her futile resistance. After shooting him a venomous glare, she gave a resigned nod.
"You’re right. My daughter is alive. Before joining the rebellion, I made sure to send her away—didn’t leave an address or anything. You’ll never find her, and you sure as hell can’t use her to threaten me. If you join us, though, I might consider handing the bandage over. Otherwise, you’ll just have to wait until I’m dead."
"Fair enough. Let’s assume I can’t find her."
Meeting her defiant gaze, Leon nodded slowly, his expression unreadable. Then, in the same calm tone, he added:
"What about your spy within the Secret Investigation Bureau? Do you think I could track them down?"
"?..."
"Don’t bother denying it. You sold them out the moment I walked in."
Pulling out the [Plague-Infected Bandage] and placing it on the table, Leon spoke matter-of-factly.
"When I first tried to inform you about Bobby Lion’s death, your exact words were, ‘The Lions are in chaos; most of their core members are dead.’ Right?"
He tapped the blood-soaked bandage lightly, his implication clear.
"I admit, I did eliminate some key figures in the Lion family—but only discovered afterward that they were central to the clan. So tell me, how did you, locked in a cell with nothing but this bandage as your 'eye,' know that those killed weren’t ordinary members but the core leadership?"
"You..."
"You’ve left far too many holes in your story. I didn’t even need to check your soul’s condition to piece things together."
With his pinky subtly pressing against the goat’s horn, Leon watched the chaotic swirl of her soul, his demeanor serene.
"As a prime suspect in the attempted assassination of the princess, everyone who interacts with you must register, and interrogations require supervision. Getting a spy into the bureau wouldn’t be easy. To avoid suspicion, they wouldn’t dare approach you unless they were part of the investigative team themselves."
"..."
"Oh, and since the spy informed you about the Lion massacre, their contact with you must have occurred after the Blood Night. That narrows the field further. When I came in earlier, I glanced at the interrogation log. You’ve been questioned roughly thirty times by four groups, totaling eight names. Excluding Isha, who clearly isn’t the spy, the remaining suspects are…"
"Stop! Stop it!"
Seeing the name forming on Leon’s lips, the prisoner’s mental defenses crumbled entirely. She screamed, desperation clawing at her throat.
"Shut up! You want the bandage? Fine! Take it! It’s all yours!"
