Chapter 125: The Invitation
Unaware that Leon had once again misunderstood her intentions, the female police officer hurried up the stairs, feeling as if needles were pricking her back. She then rushed into the chief’s office and quickly explained Leon’s purpose.
“This… This might not be very convenient.”
After hearing the policewoman’s explanation, the scar-faced burly man put down the map of the capital he’d been holding and spoke with evident difficulty. “The authority of your Cleansing Bureau has always been the highest across the entire Police Department. If it were just a routine interrogation of insurgents, I wouldn’t hesitate to comply.”
“But you’re asking for complete confidentiality during the interrogation—no written records, no witnesses. That’s a different matter altogether. Though the prisoner wasn’t the mastermind, she was still involved in the assassination attempt on the princess. If I let you meet her privately, how am I supposed to explain this to my superiors?”
“…”
He did have a point…
After listening to the scarred man’s reasoning, Leon couldn’t help but furrow his brow.
Involving something as sensitive as the princess’s assassination attempt, even the Secret Investigation Bureau couldn’t easily bend the rules for him. Yet according to his superior, matters involving anomalies required strict secrecy, with fewer people knowing the better.
In this highly subjective world, “knowledge” and “belief” themselves held power. The more people who knew about the Cleansing Bureau and the existence of anomalies, the stronger those anomalies would grow within their jurisdiction.
If they followed standard procedures—bringing in the Secret Investigation officers, keeping detailed records—the “anomaly density” in the Virgo Cleansing Bureau’s district would undoubtedly rise slightly. Such an outcome had to be avoided at all costs. But judging by the chief’s attitude…
“Chief, using excuses like this on others is one thing, but are you really going to brush me off too?”
While Leon was still racking his brain on how to persuade the scarred man, the policewoman beside him chimed in, her tone sharp and biting.
“Ever since the previous chief stepped down completely, you’ve been calling all the shots in the Secret Investigation Bureau. And now, with the current Minister of Public Security being your distant in-law, there’s no one who can pressure you.”
“As for the higher-ups in the cabinet, parliament, or even the prime minister—they’re all too busy tearing each other apart over the Lion family’s affairs. Even the princess herself hasn’t had time to deal with the assassination case. So, who exactly are you trying to justify yourself to?”
“…”
Having his excuse exposed so bluntly by his trusted subordinate, the scarred man’s face flushed with embarrassment. He glanced awkwardly at Leon, whose expression had grown increasingly strange, then cleared his throat uncomfortably.
“Ahem, ahem… While that may be true, I haven’t been in this position for long. I can’t afford to act too recklessly. I need to tread carefully, at least until—”
“Save it. You’re just afraid of taking responsibility.”
Rolling her eyes at the scarred man, the policewoman, who knew her boss’s personality all too well, added with a scoff, “You’re incredibly capable, and your methods aren’t half bad either. But whenever trouble arises, you shrink back and refuse to take charge, even over something as trivial as this… Hand over your authorization token.”
“Fine, fine. Here you go.”
Instead of getting angry after being berated, the scarred man simply retrieved the chief’s authorization token and handed it over. Then, with his rugged, scarred face set in a deep frown, he said solemnly, “If anything goes wrong because of this, don’t blame me…”
“Just say I stole it.”
“Deal.”
Once the policewoman took the token and left with Leon in a whirlwind, the scarred man sat silently for a moment. Then, he pulled another identical token from his drawer, stood up, and swiftly exited his office.
…
With the chief’s authorization token in hand, Leon and the policewoman encountered no obstacles beyond the necessary formalities. They made their way unimpeded to the dungeons of the Secret Investigation Bureau and successfully met their target.
“You talk to her first. I’ll wait outside and keep watch.”
After glancing at the visibly exhausted female prisoner—her bloodshot eyes betraying her fatigue—the policewoman shook her head, gave Leon a quick nod, and left the interrogation room. She brought a small stool and stationed herself outside the door to prevent any interruptions.
Even with her keeping guard, Leon didn’t let his guard down. He pressed his hand against the black goat’s horn and used his soul vision to thoroughly check the surroundings, ensuring no one was eavesdropping. Once satisfied, he sat down on the chair and addressed the silent prisoner.
“I’m here to tell you some good news.”
“I know.”
The woman nodded, a faint but genuine smile breaking through her pale features.
“Bobby Lion is dead, isn’t he? And the Lion family is in chaos. Almost all of their core members are gone. The Lions are finished.”
???
Leon raised an eyebrow, his eyes narrowing slightly. “Did Isha tell you all this?”
“No. That girl may be naive, but she follows the rules closely enough. Aside from blurting out Bobby Lion’s death, she told me almost nothing else.”
Not the policewoman?
Surprised by the prisoner’s words, Leon frowned. “Then how do you know all this?”
“To be precise, I ‘saw’ it firsthand.”
Pointing to the pocket where Leon had stashed the [Plague-Infected Bandage], the woman smirked. “That night, the bandage my late husband left behind was wrapped around your wrist. Though you’ve been suppressing its influence, as its original owner, I could still sense bits of what was happening around you… For instance, wherever you went, members of the Lion family dropped dead.”
Her face finally brightened with a smile as she leaned forward, her voice dripping with satisfaction. “I may not have seen the events directly, but every time a piece of your skin peeled away, someone from the Lion family died. So not all of them were killed by Bobby Lion, were they? At least a third of them fell by your hand, right?”
“…”
Careless… He hadn’t expected the bandage to retain some sensory capabilities. How foolish of him to think he’d covered his tracks perfectly, only for half of his actions to already be exposed before the investigators even arrived.
Mentally vowing never to underestimate any anomaly again, Leon fixed his gaze on the woman, his brow furrowed deeply.
“What are you implying? Are you planning to frame me?”
“Of course not.”
The woman shook her head, her smile soft but sincere. “You’ve avenged me. I should be thanking you, not harming you. As for whether this is framing… Don’t you already know the truth?”
“Heh, we’ve spent years struggling, managing only to assassinate a few mid-level targets. But in just one night, you achieved more than we ever could in three or four years.”
Having spoken her piece, the handcuffed woman didn’t linger on the topic. Instead, she stared intently at Leon, her expression earnest as she extended an invitation.
“Honestly, are you interested in joining us?”
