Chapter 120: Choices
[Name: Joyful Dance Shoes (Puppetry, Emotion)]

[Appearance: A pair of women’s dance shoes stained heavily with blood. The design is vintage—a popular style fifty years ago, once adored by a renowned ballerina who made them iconic across Belle County…]

[Ability: Enchanting dance moves, contagious allure.]

[Cost: Double physical exhaustion; cannot remove them voluntarily before losing mobility.]

[Record: These shoes belonged to Belle County’s legendary dancer. She wore them to perform a record-breaking 23 consecutive pirouettes, mesmerizing nearly six thousand spectators during a grand performance. But afterward, she retired due to torn tendons. Years later, she returned, miraculously dancing again—not alone this time. Her movements now force everyone nearby to join, dancing uncontrollably until collapsing, puppets of her will.]

[Evaluation: You’ll become the ultimate performer. Anyone witnessing your dance will follow suit, entranced until their muscles tear or you collapse from fatigue.]

[Contamination Value: 2.5]

…

[Name: Dehydrated Mermaid Jerky (Transformation, Elemental)]

[Appearance: A desiccated carcass of a dugong…]

[Ability: Transform into a merfolk, briefly control water.]

[Cost: Cannot drink water for 48 hours.]

[Record: Ariel (male), a Level 3 Incident Responder from the Libra Branch of the Cleansing Bureau, infiltrated sea tribes by becoming a female mermaid using this artifact. However, he was noticed by a merprince… and faced… “unwanted attention.”]

[Evaluation: An incredibly practical tool. Just a lick grants 48-hour access to merfolk traits—though the taste resembles licking sweaty feet marinated in fermented tofu sauce.]

[Contamination Value: 1.1]

…

[Name: Monster Under the Bed (Corruption, Fear)]

[Appearance: Demon hands emerging from shadows beneath beds at night. Quantity and size depend on the bed’s dimensions…]

[Ability: Physical harm, terror dissemination.]

[Cost: Nightmares of personal fears post-use.]

[Record: Crafted by the Nightmare Cult, this artifact plagued the Minor Canis Branch until Virgo Bureau’s Level 2 Crisis Handler Jerry Baker deployed three million termites to devour every bedframe in the area.]

[Evaluation: Dual threat of bodily and psychological damage. Effective but situational—requires a large bedframe, only activates at night, and is cumbersome to transport.]

[Contamination Value: 8.7]

…

Leon set down his pen, massaging his aching wrist. After an hour poring over the anomalous artifacts strewn across the table, he sighed.

Jerry’s kleptomania was legendary—but his competence undeniable. Every file ended with the same line: “Stolen after brief contact with Virgo Bureau’s Level 2 Crisis Handler Jerry Baker.” Their previous owners ranged from Contaminated Individuals to cult leaders, foreign royalty, and even Zodiac Bureau chiefs. Yet, the collection felt underwhelming. The highest Contamination Value was barely 12—modest compared to true powerhouses like the Sacred Spirit Pendant.

“Fantastic! Heheh… This is just… wow… I owe you big time,” chuckled the short man, flipping through appraisal reports, his face lit with glee. His skills flirted with Level 1 Disaster Handler status, but lacking reliable combat artifacts, he’d stalled. Now, these relics could bridge the gap.

“These three? Perfect fits!” He pocketed three reports, then shoved the rest into Leon’s arms. “Take whatever’s left! Want two? Go ahead!”

“Won’t hold back,” Leon smiled, skimming the papers. Most high-Contamination artifacts remained—save one at value 10. Yet, their effects were either too costly or redundant against artifacts like his pendant. With a mere 2.6 Contamination Value, he could barely activate two low-tier items or max out one. Even the revived Black Goat couldn’t be fully utilized.

Moreover, his physical strength still left much to be desired. He couldn’t even lift the standard supply crate issued by the Bureau. Among this pile of anomalies, the few that could actually benefit him were all fairly large in size. If he took them, they’d probably just sit in his office gathering dust anyway… Hmm… Wait a second.

As this thought crossed his mind, Leon couldn't help but glance toward the glass panel on the table. He set down the stack of appraisal reports in his hands and ventured a question cautiously. “Jerry… What about the thing inside the glass? Is that also an anomalous artifact?”

When Jerry heard Leon's question, he couldn't help but blink in mild surprise. After a moment’s thought, he nodded slowly and replied: “Technically? Three years ago, during a mirror-world breach at our jurisdiction’s edge, I rescued Lisa—a mirror-world entity. Want her?”

“Kinda interested,” Leon nodded awkwardly. “New recruits get issued supply boxes, but mine’s too heavy. And…” He hesitated, suspecting Jerry might be a druid. “Her ability seems handy. Of course, if there’s another Mirror Dog available—”

“Well… that’s… uh, honestly, not really doable…”

After hearing Leon’s request, the short man let out a quiet sigh of relief, then began to explain with a slightly awkward smile.

“Lisa’s more like a companion to me than just another anomalous item. I can’t really part with her… though, sure, other ‘Mirror Dogs’ are up for grabs.”

With that, he tapped the glass panel again. Lisa, the golden retriever from the mirror world, trotted into view. He cleared his throat, then—somewhat sheepishly—let out a few deep barks. She responded in kind, their exchange sounding like some bizarre interspecies conversation no one else could possibly understand.

After a brief and utterly incomprehensible back-and-forth, Lisa stretched her head beyond the visible “screen,” miming a “fetch” motion. A moment later, something small, sleepy, and vaguely dog-shaped tumbled out of the glass—unceremoniously tossed into reality like a crumpled-up sock from another dimension.
