Chapter 115: Evaluation

Oh, for the love of—

The moment he recognized that familiar silhouette, a jolt ran through Tom’s body as if someone had cracked open his skull and poured freezing water mixed with ice shards directly into his brain. He felt utterly disoriented.

Though he hadn’t seen “that figure’s” face during the dice reading, aside from the lack of wings, everything else—the hair color, the build—it all matched the person standing right in front of him now.

Especially when the stranger turned to glance back at him, surprised by being noticed. That expression? It was like looking at a carbon copy.

No wonder the figure had seemed vaguely familiar. Even though Tom hadn’t interacted with him while helping secure his position as Duke, he’d already spotted this man twice in newspaper photos over the past two months.

The first time was after the collapse of The Char Department Store money box. The guy had been buried under a mountain of gold coins, half his body submerged, captured on camera by a reporter from The Sun.

The second instance was more recent. This same person appeared at Lion Manor, battered and lying prone on the ground—a scene photographed by police officers and plastered across the front page of The Sun yet again.

Shock. His newly minted colleague apparently had true god-level potential. What kind of attitude should he adopt toward him? Should he start groveling immediately or play it cool before fawning later?

Help! Asking online, waiting urgently...

---

This guy… why does he seem so weird?

Feeling increasingly unsettled under Tom’s intense gaze, Leon hesitated for a moment before awkwardly tugging at the corner of his mouth and offering a polite smile.

To his utter astonishment, instead of reciprocating the friendly gesture, the other man flinched violently, instinctively taking half a step backward.

What’s wrong with him?

While Leon puzzled over this bizarre reaction, the red-haired chief noticed Tom’s odd behavior. After studying both men thoughtfully, she smiled warmly and broke the tension.

“You’re back sooner than expected…” She paused, then gestured between them. “Leon, you can call him Tom. Though he looks young, he joined the bureau several years before Emma—already in his thirties—and is one of our top-tier Disaster Handlers.”

A Level One Disaster Handler?

At those words, Leon’s demeanor instantly shifted to one of respect.

The chief had once explained that only the most elite employees were assigned the rank of Level One Disaster Handler—individuals capable of leading teams to tackle large-scale disasters independently. Among these handlers, the very best often became candidates for promotion to district chiefs whenever positions opened up. Both of Virgo Bureau’s Level One Handlers were considered ace elites, far surpassing ordinary handlers.

Which meant that this peculiar young man before him was essentially a “half-step away from becoming a chief.”

“Nice to meet you, Agent Tom,” Leon began respectfully, bowing slightly. Despite having lived two lifetimes, he was barely seventeen in this life—half the age of the man before him. Politeness dictated he introduce himself properly. “My name is Leon Lion. I’m a new employee who just officially joined this month. Currently, I’m only a Level Three Incident Responder. Please take care of me moving forward.”

“No need to be so formal…”

Tom reflexively tucked his injured hand further behind his back, forcing an awkward but amiable smile.

“There’s no need for such courtesies. I’ve simply been here longer than you. Let’s learn from each other, alright?”

Unsure of how to gauge this “future true god,” and too afraid of getting caught sneaking another dice roll, Tom turned to the red-haired chief and said, “Chief, I just came to submit my mission report. Nothing urgent. Since you two still have matters to discuss, I won’t disturb any longer.”

“Mm-hmm.”

The chief gave Tom a scrutinizing look, then glanced at Leon, whose impression of the man seemed favorable. Nodding, she accepted the report. “Just leave the report with me. You may go about your business.”

“Understood.”

As Tom exited the office and his unhurried footsteps faded down the corridor, the red-haired chief turned to Leon with a mischievous grin.

“So, little Leon~ what do you think of Senior Agent, Tom?”

What did he think?

After pondering for a moment, Leon replied, “Agent Tom seems quite approachable. However, there are some long-standing stains on his collar, his nails are unevenly trimmed, and the leather parts of his shoes and suitcase are poorly maintained, showing significant wear. He appears… somewhat careless about details?”

“You’re observant, but that’s not what I meant.”

The chief shook her head, her eyes narrowing slightly. In a softer tone, she instructed, “Little Leon, when you have time, use that goat to check his soul. See if there’s anything unusual lurking within.”

Huh?

Leon furrowed his brow, perplexed. “You suspect him…?”

“I don’t suspect him. Unlike other branches, everyone in our Virgo Bureau may not be saints, but none are entirely rotten either. My concern lies with whoever might be pulling strings behind him.”

“Who’s behind him?”

“He has ties to Director Aquarius.”

The chief elaborated, “Tom used to work in the Treasury Department. When the king repeatedly dismissed three consecutive finance ministers, the department fell into chaos for quite some time. Desperate for funds, Tom made some questionable decisions that ended up costing the kingdom its reserves.”

“After hitting rock bottom, he joined the Cleansing Bureau. Director Aquarius must’ve seen something special in him because he helped create a nearly tailor-made anomaly for Tom. While their direct interactions were minimal due to Aquarius’ secretive nature, it’s better to err on the side of caution.”

“I understand.”

Nodding to acknowledge the task, Leon steered the conversation back, “Chief, regarding the Demon's Heart confiscated from House Lion…”

“It’s already been sent to headquarters. We’ll wait for their assessment.”

At the mention of the artifact, the chief’s expression darkened, reminded of the plummeting performance rankings within the bureau. She took a bitter sip of tea and snapped irritably, “Stop obsessing over it. Once the investigation confirms your innocence, whatever belongs to you will remain yours. With me backing you, no one else can snatch it away.”

“Oh, good. That’s reassuring.”

Good, my foot.

Seeing Leon’s seemingly cheerful demeanor only fueled the chief’s exasperation.

“The assignment I gave you was an investigation. An investigation!”

She leaned forward, her voice rising sharply. “After identifying your suspect, why didn’t you call for backup? Instead, you went straight into combat. Look at those photos—your clothes soaked through with blood. Is that how Emma taught you?”

“And let’s not forget—you failed to stop that thing from causing mass casualties and nearly wiping out an entire noble family. Do you realize? Your evaluation for this mission is rock bottom—the lowest possible rating. Barely above outright failure.”
