Chapter 114: Divination?
Was she asking this question again?
After hearing the princess’s words, the lazy young man paused for a moment. Instead of immediately tossing the dice, he suggested, "Your Highness, while my dice readings only reflect the present moment—and conditions can change over time in long-term matters—they don’t always shift drastically. It's only been a few months since you last asked about this. If you ask now, I doubt the result will differ much from before. Perhaps it would be better to choose a new question."
"No," she replied firmly, shaking her head. Her expression remained calm as she added, "This is my birthright duty and my sole hope right now. What else could I possibly ask?"
"If that’s what you wish," he said with an exaggerated shrug, surrendering to her resolve.
With a flick of his wrist, the two dice tumbled onto the table, clattering softly before coming to rest. Both showed a single red dot.
"Thanks to the developments involving House Lion, your chances of saving the kingdom have indeed risen by two percentage points since the last reading—now standing at eleven percent."
As he spoke, the young man tapped his knuckles lightly against the wooden surface. The dice twitched and began rolling again on their own accord.
"Next, consolidating control over the military department alongside the Minister of Defense, absorbing the vacant positions left by House Lion, will bump the probability up another two points. Then, working with the Prime Minister to curb the influence of old nobles within the House of Lords, followed by leveraging alliances with those same nobles to suppress dissent in the House of Commons through restrictive commercial laws and increased taxation, will raise the odds to twenty-six percent."
He paused briefly but continued without hesitation. "Finally, if you manage to ascend the throne, purge internal threats, fend off invasions, centralize authority over the military, finances, legislation, and appointments, and promote officials who share your vision, the likelihood will surge dramatically—to fifty-one percent."
It was almost identical to the previous reading.
Listening intently to the escalating probabilities and the steps she already intended to take, Princess Veronica couldn't help but smile wryly before giving a slight shake of her head. Yes, achieving all these things might grant her the power to save the nation—but they weren’t tasks akin to ordering a cartload of fruit or secretly loosening a wheel nut. Each step required countless sleepless nights and years of painstaking negotiations. The road ahead remained arduous.
Clickety-clack.
Just as the princess leaned closer to listen, something strange happened. After reaching “fifty-one,” instead of progressing toward “sixty-six” as expected, the dice suddenly spun wildly out of control.
The young man stared dumbfounded as the tiny objects whirred faster and faster across the desk. Sparks flew, and soon black smoke curled upward from the scorched wood, filling the room with an acrid smell.
What on earth was happening?
Though rare items like these dice were nearly indestructible, instinct made him lunge forward to stop them. But the moment his hand brushed against the spinning cubes, their razor-sharp edges sliced open his palm. Yelping in pain, he recoiled just as the bloodstained dice collided one final time and came to rest, their sharp corners pointing skyward, nestled into small craters burned into the desktop.
"...What just happened?"
Seeing the stunned look on the young man's face, the princess felt a pang of unease. She quickly broke the silence. "Why are both 'zero' faces showing? What does this mean?"
"It means... the divination didn't fully activate."
Glancing at the bloody dice and the smeared crimson trails they’d left behind, the young man clutched his injured hand, wincing. "The question you asked pertains to someone with a Leon value exceeding sixty—or rather, a true god-level entity. They detected our probing and interfered to halt the inquiry."
A true god? How had her query attracted the attention of such a being?
Though well-versed in the existence of Cleansing Bureau anomalies and deities, the princess knew full well that true gods were far from the benevolent figures worshipped in temples. Her brow furrowed anxiously. "Does this mean... a true god plans to descend upon the kingdom?"
"I don’t think so," he replied hesitantly, shaking his head. "Not every true god-level presence is necessarily divine. While I couldn’t see its face clearly, based on its silhouette, it seemed human—but with multiple wings." He frowned, deep in thought. Something about the figure felt oddly familiar...
Recalling the fleeting vision—a slim figure with jet-black hair and eyes, adorned with several iridescent feathered wings—he filed the image away securely. Turning back to the princess, he offered reassurance.
"It doesn’t necessarily target the kingdom directly. If it is a true god, perhaps you’ll encounter conflict—or even cooperation—with one of its devoted followers in the future. Or maybe you’ll simply cross paths repeatedly. Any of these scenarios could draw its notice enough to interrupt the divination. But rest assured; thanks to the Cleansing Bureau, there won’t be any major issues. Countless attempts at divine descent have occurred throughout history, yet none have succeeded in lingering here permanently. There’s no need for excessive concern."
But still… it was a true god. How could she not worry?
Taking a steadying breath, the princess asked, "Can you try rolling the dice again? To confirm the situation?"
"I’m afraid not," he said apologetically, raising his still-bleeding hand for emphasis. "Based on how mildly it reacted after detecting my intrusion, I suspect its temperament is relatively gentle—it merely issued a minor punishment. But if I push my luck further and attempt another reading, while death isn’t likely, I’d probably end up bedridden for months at best."
"Very well. Thank you for your efforts."
Sighing in disappointment, the princess retrieved her checkbook. In addition to paying the agreed fee, she generously added a substantial bonus. Handing it over, she added cautiously, "If this true god stops watching you sometime later..."
"I’ll redo the reading immediately and inform you of any irregularities as soon as possible," he promised, ever mindful of maintaining good relations with his valued client.
After wrapping a bandage around his injured hand, the weary young man bid farewell and hurried off to report back to the Cleansing Bureau. Despite his chief’s generally lenient demeanor, the organization enforced strict regulations regarding the use of abilities as valuable—and potentially game-changing—as his. Every movement, every contact, had to be meticulously documented. Only during brief intervals between missions did he find time to moonlight for extra income.
By aiding his new colleague’s ascent to the dukedom, he’d already delayed returning for nearly two days. If he didn’t submit his mission report soon, he risked facing scrutiny alongside his coworker.
Pushing open the heavy door of the bureau, he trudged down dimly lit corridors until sunlight spilled from the open doorway of the chief’s office. After a moment’s hesitation, he decided against heading straight to his workspace. Retrieving the pre-written report, he knocked gently and entered.
"Chief, I’ve returned from the investigation—oh, apologies."
Mid-sentence, he realized the chief wasn’t alone. Politely excusing himself, he glanced curiously at the other occupant of the room—a young man with strikingly familiar features: jet-black hair, obsidian eyes, and a lean build. As the stranger turned to meet his gaze, recognition flickered across both their faces…
