Chapter 140: Practical Application
The psychological concept of suggestion refers to influencing people's thoughts and behaviors indirectly, using subtle and abstract methods, without them realizing it. This leads individuals to act or think in ways that align with the suggester’s expectations.
This definition came from a psychology documentary Wang Ping had watched just a few days ago. If there was anyone who could put theory into practice more enthusiastically than Wang Ping, they hadn’t been born yet.
For three consecutive days, whenever Gu Lang was home, Wang Ping made sure to stay within one meter of him, tablet in hand. Over those three days, Gu Lang unknowingly absorbed an extensive crash course on the Qiangtang wilderness—from its unique geological features to its diverse wildlife—all thanks to the narrator’s soothing voice emanating from Wang Ping’s tablet. No matter what Gu Lang did, whether eating, sleeping, or training, images of the desolate plateau haunted his mind.
After getting KO’d multiple times during sparring sessions due to his wandering focus, Gu Lang decided enough was enough. He bid farewell to his sanda coach and drove straight to Shanghai.
---
“You’re going to Tibet?”
Chen Bai, ever the dapper gentleman, sat across from Gu Lang at a café near Douyu headquarters. Even in the sweltering summer heat, he looked impeccable in his tailored suit.
“Yeah,” Gu Lang replied, stirring his coffee lazily. “You’ve complained before that I never tell you when I’m leaving. So this time, I came here first to sign the liability waiver.”
“To be honest…” Chen Bai sighed, rubbing his temples. “I’m starting to dread your live streams. Every time you go out, something crazy happens. Twice now, I’ve had to call the police because of you! Other streamers might deal with bugs or minor inconveniences, but you? You always end up running into poachers! You can’t count on your luck to runaway from dangers every time.”
“Who ran away?” Gu Lang snapped defensively, rolling his eyes. “If it weren’t for me, how would the cops have caught those poachers? Give me some credit! Besides, it’s not like I want to run into them. I’d rather just quietly do my live stream in peace!”
Chen Bai mulled this over. He had to admit, despite Gu Lang’s arrogance, the guy did seem to have decent luck. Surely, lightning wouldn’t strike a third time… right?
Still, the idea of Gu Lang venturing into the uninhabited Qiangtang region worried him. “How about this—I’ll arrange a guide for you. I know plenty of outdoor enthusiasts, including someone who once cycled through Qiangtang. Having an experienced person around will save you trouble.”
“No thanks!” Gu Lang shot down the suggestion immediately. “I’m doing a live stream, remember? If I bring along some ‘expert,’ am I supposed to film them instead of myself? Don’t worry so much. I’ll take Boss with me—we’ll manage fine.”
Chen Bai groaned internally. Why does this idiot refuse to learn? After two close calls, he’s still as stubborn as ever.
“Oh, by the way!” Gu Lang suddenly leaned in conspiratorially. “I’ve been practicing sanda lately. Now, no one can get close to me unless I let them!”
Chen Bai raised an eyebrow. That explains the bruises all over his face. “Right… Clearly, you’re winning those fights.”
Though Gu Lang refused the guide, he did agree to another proposal. Douyu was organizing a survival-themed outdoor program featuring five men and two women stranded on a deserted island. Considering both entertainment value and comedic relief, Chen Bai suggested Gu Lang and Wang Ping. Of course, he didn’t mention that everyone else was there to survive—Gu Lang’s role was purely for laughs.
The show was scheduled for September. If Gu Lang wanted to participate, he’d need to return to Hangzhou before then.
Calculating the timeline, Gu Lang realized he only had a month. Hiking was out of the question, and cycling seemed unlikely too. Since this was his first trip to Qiangtang, driving seemed safest. If everything went smoothly, he could complete his crossing in under two weeks.
---
That evening, Gu Lang returned home unusually late. Wang Ping, having finished dinner with Grandma, was about to sneak back to his room when the familiar roar of a Jeep echoed outside the gate.
“Woof!”
Dahei bolted out of the kitchen, beating Gu Lang to the door and yanking it open eagerly.
“Haha, thanks, Dahei!” Gu Lang waved as he lowered the car window.
Parking the Jeep in the garage, Gu Lang grabbed a folder and entered the living room, calling loudly, “Grandma! Grandma! I need to talk to you!”
“What’s all the yelling for? Do I look deaf?” Grandma shouted from the kitchen.
“Hehe!” Gu Lang grinned sheepishly, tossing the folder onto the couch before rushing into the kitchen. “Grandma, let me help you wash dishes!”
“Well, well! What’s gotten into you today? Did you get yourself into trouble again?” Grandma teased.
Meanwhile, Wang Ping hopped onto the couch and peeked inside the folder while the room was empty except for Dahei. As expected, it contained yet another liability waiver, signed and ready.
Looks like my efforts over the past few days paid off, Wang Ping thought smugly.
“What? You’re going to Tibet? Absolutely not!” Grandma’s voice rose sharply from the kitchen.
“But Grandma, I signed a contract for this live stream!” Gu Lang protested quickly, trying to use the agreement as leverage.
Footsteps approached. Wang Ping hastily shoved the document back into the folder and scurried to the other side of the couch, pretending to lounge casually.
Supporting Grandma by the arm, Gu Lang led her to the sofa and sat down beside her.
“Stop waving that useless piece of paper around! I’ve spent my whole life in business—I know contracts inside and out. If that thing really meant anything, you wouldn’t have time to waste learning how to get beaten up every day!”
“It’s called sanda, Grandma…” Gu Lang muttered weakly.
“Sanda? Ha! Looks more like ‘getting beaten’ to me. Who pays money to get punched?” Grandma scolded.
“Ahem…”
Glancing guiltily toward Wang Ping, Gu Lang blushed and changed the subject. “Let’s talk about the Tibet trip, Grandma. Don’t worry—I’ll drive. It’ll be like a vacation.”
“Tsk.”
Grandma sighed deeply, patting Gu Lang’s hand. “You’re just like your mother—always causing trouble. You think Tibet is easy to visit? Your grandfather served there as a soldier. He told me countless stories about brave men who succumbed to altitude sickness.”
“Don’t worry, Grandma! I consulted an expert in Shanghai and bought oxygen tanks!” Gu Lang reassured her with a grin.
Wang Ping rolled his eyes. That girl truly doesn’t miss any chance to increase sales.
“Hmph! Just wait until you experience altitude sickness firsthand—you won’t be so cocky then!” Grandma muttered, shaking her head.
“Does that mean you approve? Hehe, I knew you cared about me the most!” Gu Lang gushed, showering her with flattery.
Wang Ping shared his excitement silently. Finally, after much effort, Gu Lang was heading to Tibet.
I should pack my things!
Leaping off the couch, Wang Ping darted toward the stairs. Though he originally didn’t own much luggage, gifts from Lily and online purchases courtesy of Gu Lang had given him quite the wardrobe. Now, even Wang Ping had packing to do.
Seeing Wang Ping disappear upstairs, Gu Lang turned back to Grandma with a mischievous smile. “Oh, and Grandma… Huanhuan’s coming with me too…”
“Hmph! Go ahead, go! Both of you ungrateful brats! At least Dahei stays home to keep me company!” Grandma grumbled.
“Woof!”
Dahei wagged its tail enthusiastically. Unfortunately, dogs can’t speak—otherwise, it might have admitted it wanted to join the adventure too.
