Chapter 104: The Awakening Madman

[Name: Heart of Ambition (Corruption, Pride, Domination)]

[Appearance: A heart that continues to beat eternally even after being severed from its body. If you dare approach it, you will hear the whispers of a demon, arrogantly demanding that you reveal your deepest ambitions.]

[The stronger and more deeply rooted one’s hidden desires and pride are, the easier it is for this cursed artifact to take notice and ensnare them.]

[Abilities: Demon's Heart, Amplification of Anomalies, Domination]

[Cost: Open your soul and invite it to witness your ambition and arrogance.]

[Record: Once the heart of a near-divine Greater Demon, it fell into dormancy due to severe injuries. During its slumber, it was traded as a rare exhibit at an underground auction because of its peculiar ability to keep beating outside the body.]

[After being purchased by a member of the Lionheart family, it was reawakened by the raw ambition harbored in the buyer's younger brother. It then devoured the boy’s heart and replaced it, continuing on to this day.]

[Evaluation: An anomaly with virtually no combat abilities but whose power grows exponentially depending on the status and authority of its user. In the hands of someone insignificant—a fading noble clinging to outdated titles—it remains relatively harmless. But if wielded by a true figure of influence, or even one of the kings of the Twelve Kingdoms, it could unleash terror upon the world.]

It could unleash terror upon the world…

Leon stared at what was undoubtedly the highest evaluation he had ever seen among all the anomalies he’d encountered so far. For the first time, he began to grasp just how formidable the Black Goat must have been during its prime.

While the Black Goat's heart had also suffered grievous wounds, it remained untamed—"wild," unlike the broken remnants of the goat's horn that the Chief held onto, which had long since lost much of its original potency. Yet despite its damage, the Heart of Ambition retained most of its terrifying capabilities.

For those ensnared under its "domination," it granted absolute control over life and death—a domination so complete it left little room for resistance.

Not bad.

---

“What are you doing?!”

Before the young man could recover from the shock of having his soul “used” by Leon, he felt another wave of activation surge through him—this time far more intense than before. His face paled as he desperately grabbed hold of Leon’s arm, struggling with every ounce of strength while shouting hoarsely:

“What are you doing?! What do you want from me?! Stop!”

“…”

Leon offered no reply. Blood-soaked and wracked with pain akin to a thousand cuts, he closed his eyes and pushed the Heart of Ambition to its limits using the amplified effects of [I Am the Demon].

A low hum resonated outward, invisible waves rippling through the air like ripples in a pond. Within moments, silence descended upon the entire Lion estate.

Nobles, officials, servants, stewards, gardeners—all those within range of the Heart of Ambition—were sucked into the intangible pyramid of domination.

Standing on the second tier of the pyramid, Leon surveyed the sea of dark purple souls around him. The stench of corruption hung heavy in the air, ten times worse than rotting mud. With steely resolve, he made up his mind.

Thud. Thud. Thud. Thud.

As Leon methodically “called out” each name, a series of sickening impacts echoed throughout the estate. Blooms of flesh and bone exploded like macabre fireworks against stone walls and marble floors. Men and women leapt from rooftops, hurled themselves into lakes, or dashed headlong into boulders—all driven by their own corrupted desires.

“Stop it!”

Bobby Lion’s disembodied soul screamed from beyond the confines of the pyramid, rage boiling over as he watched the carnage unfold below.

“Do you realize what you’re doing?! You Cleansing Bureau agents have agreements with the kingdoms—you can’t just slaughter innocents like this! Do you know what will happen when they find out about this?”

“Oh? And what exactly did I do?”

Leon tilted his head slightly, calmly scrutinizing the festering souls beneath him. One by one, he crushed those that were utterly devoid of light, rotten to the core. He glanced at Bobby with mild curiosity.

“Isn’t this all thanks to you?”

“Me?!...”

After obliterating yet another decaying soul, Leon turned fully toward Bobby, his expression eerily serene. There were no witnesses here except for the two of them—and soon, not even that would be true.

“In the course of this investigation, I was ambushed by you and trapped here in your estate. To extract secrets from the Cleansing Bureau, you threatened me with the lives of your kin. Every second I refused to divulge information, you killed another person.”

He paused, letting the weight of his words sink in.

“Unfortunately for everyone involved, I’m just a low-level employee who knows next to nothing about the Bureau’s operations. So these people died for nothing.”

“You’re lying!”

Bobby’s soul burned with fury as he roared back.

“They’ll investigate you! When the Bureau finds out about the massacre—”

“How?” Leon cut him off, his voice chillingly calm as he continued his grim work.

“Tell me, am I not mistaken? You’re the one fused with the anomaly, not me. How could I possibly use your artifact to kill your family?”

“Wha—”

“As for other forms of investigation…” Leon mused aloud, almost lazily crushing another soul between his metaphysical fingers.

“The only witness here is you. And once I’m done, I won’t waste your filthy soul—I plan to feed it to the Black Goat for digestion. So tell me, how will anyone investigate? By interrogating a soul that’s already been torn apart? Or questioning people who were under your control and saw nothing?”

Silence stretched taut between them.

“Well…” Leon frowned thoughtfully. “I suppose there’s always the possibility of something extraordinary—an artifact capable of reversing time or manipulating causality. If the Bureau values this incident enough to deploy such tools, they might uncover the truth. But really, do you think you’re worth that kind of effort?”

“You… you monster…” Bobby seethed, impotent fury twisting his spectral features.

“You’re insane! You’re a damned lunatic!”

“A lunatic, huh…”

At that, Leon’s movements faltered briefly. Memories surfaced unbidden—the image of himself years ago, clutching a knife, ready to storm the Department of Public Works.

“Maybe I am,” he murmured softly.

With a final, decisive motion, he extinguished the last irredeemable flame. Surveying the remaining souls—some faintly tinged with warmth—he stepped out of the pyramid and seized Bobby by the throat, his grip firm and unyielding.

“If I’ve truly gone mad, then it happened precisely on the 28th of last month.” He leaned in close, his gaze piercing. “Any last words?”
