Chapter 128: Whom Should I Help?
As Damuge and Naktu took off running, the startled black bear gave chase. Seeing the two men behind suddenly pick up speed, Gu Lang, who had been moving ahead, also scrambled to keep moving forward.
If one were to check the time, it was only seven o’clock in the evening—most people had just finished dinner. But deep in these mountains, the night was pitch-black, with not even a sliver of light to guide the way.
Gu Lang hadn’t run more than a few steps before he tripped over an exposed tree root, tumbling headlong into the underbrush. In the process, he flung Wang Ping out of his arms, sending the honey badger flying into some nearby bushes.
Many people know that felines have an uncanny ability to land safely from great heights. By using their tails for balance and twisting their bodies mid-air, they can reorient themselves before hitting the ground, minimizing injury. But this isn’t exclusive to cats; many animals possess similar agility.
From what Wang Ping had observed, aside from oddities like wild buffalo, crocodiles, and giraffes, most animals with tails exhibited remarkable balance. Take monkeys, squirrels, or mongooses, for example.
Inspired by this, Wang Ping occasionally tried practicing such techniques himself. After all, mastering the skill could mean the difference between life and death.
Unfortunately, his fluffy tail seemed perpetually at odds with him. Every time he attempted to use it, things went awry, leaving him battered and bruised.
“Ouch…” Wang Ping groaned, rubbing the bump on his head as he crawled out of the bushes. Looking around, he spotted Gu Lang frantically searching through the grass about five meters away.
Relieved, Wang Ping let out a quiet sigh. At moments like this, he dreaded the appearance of “The Senseless Gu,” the unreliable side of Gu Lang that tended to make rash decisions.
“Boss… Boss…” Gu Lang whispered hoarsely, calling out softly as he moved from bush to bush. Suddenly, the rustling of leaves caught his attention, and turning around, he locked eyes with Wang Ping’s glowing nocturnal gaze.
A flicker of relief crossed Gu Lang’s face, but before he could say anything, a gunshot rang out from across the river.
Bang!
The flare of the shotgun illuminated the riverbank, followed immediately by a ferocious roar. The sound came from less than fifty meters away, accompanied by splashing water and angry shouts.
“Damn it…” Gu Lang cursed under his breath, quickly scooping up Wang Ping and resuming his sprint.
Whether it was a trick of the light or a fleeting reflection, Wang Ping thought he glimpsed another flash of light far to the west. Moments later, loud splashes and roars erupted again, followed by another gunshot—and this time, screams of pain pierced the air.
Gu Lang had no idea what was happening behind him and didn’t want to find out. He kept running, his labored breathing betraying his mounting anxiety.
Wang Ping, on the other hand, was curious—and a little gleeful. Earlier, when he suspected they were being followed, he’d decided to set a trap. That’s why he instructed Gu Lang to circle ahead of Damuge. Whoever—or whatever—was tailing them would naturally focus first on the flashlight beams coming from across the river. But Gu Lang’s convoluted thinking almost made Wang Ping forget about their pursuers altogether.
Now, however, everything was clear. It turned out to be the black bear again. Judging by the splashing sounds, the creature must have crossed the river to reach the opposite bank.
“Tsk, tsk. All because someone slapped it with a tablet—it holds grudges like this? No wonder it’ll never get a girlfriend!” Wang Ping muttered sarcastically, mentally assessing the situation and calculating the remaining combatants’ strength.
“This doesn’t look good…”
Wang Ping grew concerned. If Damuge and Naktu fell too quickly, he and Gu Lang might end up being the bear’s next targets. While Wang Ping wasn’t worried about himself, he couldn’t guarantee Gu Lang’s safety in such darkness. If “The Senseless Gu” took over and led them deeper into the forest, Gu Lang might not live to see tomorrow’s sunrise.
“Go back and help?”
Suddenly, Wang Ping began tapping Gu Lang’s arm repeatedly with both paws.
“What is it?” Without breaking stride, Gu Lang panted as he glanced down.
“…Are you seriously asking me that? Didn’t you decide that two taps meant stop?” Wang Ping thought exasperatedly, adding kicks for emphasis.
It took Gu Lang a moment to recall his own instructions. Gradually, he slowed to a halt.
Wang Ping leapt out of his arms, paused briefly, then ran to a nearby pine tree and tapped its trunk.
“There. Stay here and wait for me. I’ll come back once I’ve handled things!”
“What do you mean?” Gu Lang looked confused, anxious, and impatient, constantly glancing over his shoulder, fearing the bear might appear at any moment.
“You’re hopeless!” Wang Ping scratched his head in frustration and pointed upward toward the treetop.
After staring blankly for a while, realization dawned on Gu Lang. “Oh! You mean hide in the tree? Great idea!”
Climbing trees was something Gu Lang had grown accustomed to. Without hesitation, he grabbed onto the trunk and began scaling it.
“That’s settled…” Wang Ping shook his head and turned to head back. As long as Gu Lang stayed put and didn’t wander off, staying in the tree should keep him relatively safe.
By now, both Damuge and Naktu had sustained fresh injuries. Damuge, in particular, was struggling. The deep wound on his arm—inflicted earlier by Wang Ping—had reopened, making it nearly impossible for him to hold his gun steadily.
Naktu, meanwhile, had picked up a resinous pine branch, which he lit with a lighter. Waving the flaming torch, he managed to keep the bear at bay—for now.
Despite this, the two men continued retreating cautiously. Any lapse in attention, and the bear would seize the opportunity to close the distance.
Already, claw marks raked across Naktu’s chest, oozing blood. These wounds were inflicted earlier when the bear swiped at him during a moment of hesitation.
As Wang Ping stealthily swam across the river and crept closer, Damuge was busy devising a plan.
“The bears at this time of year are tough to penetrate with bullets, and we don’t have time to set traps. Naktu, distract it. I’ll circle around and shoot it in its weak spot.” Damuge spoke rapidly, his voice strained from exhaustion.
“Distract it? Are you trying to get me killed faster?” Naktu shouted back, still waving the burning branch.
“And do you have a better idea? Die together?” Damuge roared.
Too much had happened today. Their cargo was damaged, and they’d lost a man. Damuge was no longer the patient individual he’d been earlier; his temper was fraying, and his frustration was palpable.
“You charge forward and shoot it in the face! I don't believe it can still chase us if we blind it!” Naktu replied, panic evident in his voice. Clearly, his rational thinking had abandoned him.
“Don’t spout nonsense! Do you even know how the nickname ‘Bear Blind’ came about? Shoot out its eyes, and we’re both dead!”
Damuge glared, raising his gun—but instead of aiming at the bear, he pointed it squarely at Naktu.
“If you don’t follow my orders, I’ll kill you right now. A corpse works just fine as bait!”
“Screw you! Screw you!” Enraged, Naktu hurled insults and took a bold step forward, swinging the flaming branch directly at the bear’s head.
Roar!
The flames forced the bear to retreat momentarily, its attention shifting fully to Naktu. Seizing the chance, Damuge bolted, circling behind the bear while keeping his sights trained on its vulnerable lower regions.
“This isn’t looking good…” Wang Ping peeked out from the riverbank, his eyes darting thoughtfully. “If he manages to hit the bear’s weak spot, he might actually take it down. So… whose side should I take?”
