Chapter 127: Wang Ping’s Intuition
Wang Ping suddenly felt a wave of unease creep over him.
He couldn’t quite put his finger on why, but it was as if something in the dark was watching him with ill intent. Yet every time he climbed onto Gu Lang’s shoulder to take a look, there was nothing to be seen—just an empty void. Still, his uneasiness made Gu Lang tense up too, like a coiled spring ready to snap.
Intuition, after all, isn’t always baseless.
Take, for instance, when you close your eyes and someone or something approaches your face. Even before contact is made, you’ll feel an instinctive pressure around your eyes. Or consider how, if you stare at someone long enough, they’ll inevitably sense it and glance back at you. That’s why seasoned trackers never fixate on their target; instead, they cast quick, periodic glances to keep them within sight without drawing attention.
Wang Ping had a hunch—he and Gu Lang were being followed. And whoever—or whatever—was tailing them wasn’t exactly skilled at it. They were clumsy, amateurish even.
After staring at the distant flashlight beam flickering across the riverbank for some time, Wang Ping squirmed violently in Gu Lang’s arms.
“What’s wrong?” Gu Lang asked, already jittery. His body tensed further, and he reflexively crouched down.
Wang Ping leapt out of his grasp and pointed toward the forest ahead. The woods were pitch-black, and it took Gu Lang several moments of squinting to make out the motion. Then, with a quiver in his voice, he whispered, “What’s out there?”
Wang Ping: …
Sometimes, you just have to admit that beyond basic commands like “eat,” and “sleep,” more complex communication between them—one human, one honey badger—became nearly impossible. When Gu Lang needed clarification, things were simpler: he’d ask a question, then wait for Wang Ping to nod or shake his head. But when Wang Ping wanted to convey something? Chaos ensued.
Deciding verbal communication was futile, Wang Ping opted for demonstration instead. He turned and bolted into the darkness.
“Hey!” Gu Lang cried out, instantly panicked. Scrambling to his feet, he chased after Wang Ping, his voice trembling as he called out repeatedly.
“Boss, wait for me!”
“Don’t run off!”
“Is something chasing us?”
“Ugh… slow down, will you…”
“You idiot, stop yelling!” Wang Ping snapped, swatting Gu Lang’s shin after running only a few steps. A wave of exasperation washed over him.
“This is pitch black out here! You’re sprinting like crazy—it’s freaking terrifying!” Gu Lang knew shouting wasn’t helping matters. But whenever Wang Ping left his side—especially when running full tilt—a primal fear gripped him, forcing the words out of his mouth. It wasn’t entirely about stopping Wang Ping, either; most of the time, it was just to steady his own nerves.
“How about I carry you instead? Are you mad because I’m too slow?” Gu Lang proposed, trying to reason with Wang Ping. “Here’s the deal: if we need to go faster while I’m carrying you, tap my arm twice. Once for slowing down, and both paws together if we need to stop. Sound good?”
“Took you long enough to figure that out! Do you know how exhausting this has been?” Wang Ping thought, nodding approvingly. Realizing Gu Lang couldn’t see the gesture, he scampered over and smacked his shin twice.
Seeing agreement, Gu Lang quickly crouched down and scooped Wang Ping back into his arms. Without missing a beat, Wang Ping promptly tapped his arm twice.
With a relieved sigh, Gu Lang began moving cautiously through the trees. But not far into their journey, he felt another double tap.
“Uh, boss… If I speed up any more, I’ll catch up to those two guys,” Gu Lang murmured.
That was precisely what Wang Ping intended—not only catching up but overtaking them. He slapped again, urging Gu Lang to pick up the pace.
“Alright, alright—you’re the boss. Whatever you say…” Gu Lang muttered under his breath, breaking into a jog. Using the dim light filtering through the canopy, he navigated around tree trunks and roots.
Fifty meters wasn’t much of a gap, especially when pursued with purpose. Under Wang Ping’s persistent prodding, Gu Lang accelerated until they’d surpassed Damuge and his companion by nearly a hundred meters. At that point, Wang Ping gave a single tap, signaling Gu Lang to slow down. Now, somewhat ironically, Gu Lang found himself leading from the front.
Gu Lang had been puzzling over Wang Ping’s intentions the whole time. When he glanced back and noticed the flashlight beams behind them occasionally sweeping back and forth, realization dawned on his face.
“Boss, you’re brilliant! Most people who think they’re being followed keep looking backward, expecting to spot someone. But they’d never guess we’re actually tracking them while staying ahead! Haha, thank goodness it’s nighttime—they’ve got flashlights, shining like fireflies. Hard to lose sight of ‘em now.”
“Uh…” Wang Ping froze momentarily.
Was that really what he meant? Oh well… as long as you’re happy, buddy.
Meanwhile, farther behind, Damuge frowned as he lowered his flashlight and turned forward once more, confusion etched across his features.
“What’s gotten into you? You’ve been acting paranoid since earlier,” Naktu said, raising an eyebrow.
“Did you hear that sound just now? Something ran past over there,” Damuge replied casually, glancing back again.
“Give me a break! This forest is crawling with critters—owls, foxes, rabbits, deer. Hearing something move isn’t exactly groundbreaking news,” Naktu scoffed. “Can you cut it out already? You’re making me nervous!”
“Better safe than sorry!” Damuge snapped, visibly irritated by Naktu’s dismissive attitude.
“Oh ho ho, sure thing~” Naktu drawled sarcastically, his tone laced with implication.
“What’s that supposed to mean? Think I’m overreacting?” Damuge stopped dead in his tracks.
“I don’t think you’re overreacting—I think you’re guilty.”
Before Naktu could finish, Damuge lunged forward, grabbing him by the throat. His expression twisted with rage, barely contained, as he snarled, “You ungrateful little worm. I ended his suffering! Suffering, do you understand? Keep pushing me on this, and no matter how many times you call me ‘Uncle,’ I swear you won’t leave these woods alive!”
Naktu choked, unable to speak as Damuge tightened his grip. Gasping for air, his face turning red, Naktu flailed one hand against Damuge’s arm while the other fumbled for the hunting knife strapped to his waist. With a swift motion, he unsheathed it and swung at Damuge.
Clang!
Damuge staggered back, deflecting the blade with his flashlight. The impact sent the flashlight tumbling to the ground, its beam shooting sideways toward the opposite bank.
“Cough… damn it! Are you trying to strangle me?” Naktu wheezed, clutching his neck as he gulped down air.
At that exact moment, a low growl echoed from the area illuminated by the fallen flashlight. Both men instinctively whipped their heads around.
There, caught squarely in the beam, stood a massive black bear. Its bewildered expression was almost comical as it shielded its eyes with a massive paw, growling menacingly.
“Shit…”
Gu Lang froze mid-step, staring in confusion at the scene unfolding on the opposite shore. The flashlight beams began swinging wildly, accompanied by shouts from Damuge and Naktu. The pair took off running along the riverbank, their panicked cries fading into the night.
