Chapter 123: The Darkest Moment of Wang Ping’s Life
Though everyone was experiencing the same passage of time, the dense forest and towering mountains made the sunset seem to arrive earlier than usual.
Wang Ping wanted to die—not because being dangled by his tail was unbearable or because the black bear was closing in—but because an all-too-familiar sensation bloomed once again on his furry little bottom. This time, it hit him with overwhelming intensity, leaving Wang Ping wishing he could just keel over and perish on the spot.
“Gu Lang, let go of me this instant!!” Wang Ping slapped desperately at Gu Lang’s arm, feeling as though this was the darkest moment of his life as a honey badger.
Just then, Gu Lang stumbled over an exposed tree root, losing his balance and pitching forward. Reflexively, he swung the hand holding Wang Ping outward.
Wang Ping had been squeezing his eyes shut, trying to focus every ounce of strength into controlling his rear. Unprepared for the sudden forward fling, his mental defenses crumbled, and the dreaded bloom erupted with violent force.
Time seemed to freeze in that second. Gu Lang’s body leaned forward like a javelin thrower mid-throw, his arm extended straight ahead. Meanwhile, Wang Ping, limbs splayed, his tail stretching out behind him in perfect alignment with his face.
“Pffffftttttt~~~~~”
The sound itself lasted only a split second, yet it felt endless to Wang Ping. For years afterward, he would vividly recall every detail of its cause, execution, and aftermath.
Gu Lang staggered forward but managed to regain his footing before falling. It almost seemed as though his entire stumble had been orchestrated solely for Wang Ping’s explosive release. But no sooner had he straightened up than his body convulsed violently, and he immediately dropped Wang Ping.
Landing unceremoniously on a bed of dry leaves, Wang Ping watched as Gu Lang’s perpetually stoic expression finally cracked.
“Ugh~” First came an uncontrollable dry heave, followed by a bulging of his cheeks. Seemingly disoriented, Gu Lang staggered toward a nearby willow tree, clutching at its trunk as he began retching violently.
“Roar!”
In the meantime, the pursuing black bear finally caught up. However, Gu Lang was clearly beyond caring—his vomiting echoed louder than the bear’s growls, raising concerns that he might expel his very stomach next.
What mortified Wang Ping the most, however, was the bear’s reaction upon approaching them. At first, it paused, sniffed the air, then abruptly recoiled, shaking its head as if confronted with a biological weapon.
Wang Ping couldn’t help but feel insulted.
“It’s all your fault!”
Scrambling to his feet, Wang Ping glared at the massive black bear towering above him. His eyes reddened—he wasn’t sure whether from anger or humiliation.
“Don’t think you’re untouchable just because you’re a protected species!”
With a ferocious roar, Wang Ping planted his hind legs firmly on the ground and charged toward the bear on all fours, baring his teeth defiantly.
When animals fight outside of hunting scenarios, they often prefer intimidation over direct combat. The stronger party typically displays dominance, hoping to drive off the weaker opponent. If neither backs down, there’s usually a tentative first strike before things escalate further.
But Wang Ping never did anything conventionally. In his mind, if a fight was inevitable, striking first was always the best strategy.
“Roar!”
Initially startled by Wang Ping’s earlier… offensive maneuver, the black bear now roared furiously at seeing this tiny creature dare to charge again. Rising onto its hind legs, it swiped downward with both massive paws.
Quickly pivoting sideways, Wang Ping evaded the attack with a drift-like motion, planting one paw firmly on the ground before leaping upward. He aimed directly for the center of the distinctive white “V” marking on the bear’s chest.
As his claws made contact with the skin, Wang Ping felt significant resistance, akin to stabbing through layers of thick leather. Though he managed to break the surface, he couldn’t penetrate any deeper.
Realizing he was about to fall, Wang Ping hastily grabbed hold of the bear’s thick white fur. Using it like climbing ropes, he scurried upward, clawing his way toward the bear’s face.
“Roar!!”
Sensing something amiss on its chest, the bear reared back, sitting heavily on the ground while swiping frantically at its torso.
Meanwhile, Gu Lang remained collapsed beneath the willow tree, retching so forcefully it seemed he might expel his gallbladder along with everything else. Tears and snot streamed down his face, his mind foggy as though recovering from a severe hangover.
Hearing growls behind him, Gu Lang turned his head slightly, squinting through tear-filled eyes. Spotting Wang Ping tangled up with the bear, he barely had time to process what he saw before another wave of nausea overwhelmed him.
“Ugh... Oh God... What’s wrong with me? Ugh…”
The senseless version of Gu Lang had been knocked offline, courtesy of Wang Ping’s strategic gas attack, and showed no signs of returning anytime soon. Left alone, Gu Lang clung to the tree trunk, vomiting until the world spun around him.
“You damn bear! I told you not to chase me! Bad bear! Terrible bear!”
Now perched atop the black bear’s head, Wang Ping yanked fiercely at the fur behind its ears, slapping its snout repeatedly. Each smack landed in a different spot, forcing the enraged bear to swipe wildly after each blow. Wang Ping dodged narrowly each time, creating a comical sequence where the bear essentially ended up slapping itself.
While Wang Ping’s strikes weren’t particularly devastating—even with his considerable strength, they paled compared to legendary tales of Wu Song fighting tigers—the bear’s retaliatory swipes were far more dangerous.
Before long, the bear began to sway dizzily.
“Roar!”
Frustrated and disoriented, the bear tilted its head back and unleashed a thunderous roar, causing Wang Ping’s ears to ring painfully.
“Oh, so you’ve got a loud voice, huh?”
Still gripping the bear’s fur, Wang Ping straddled its head, pulling one ear close to his mouth. Taking a deep breath, he leaned in and delivered a piercing scream directly into the bear’s eardrum.
“Aaaooooo!!!”
Perhaps due to lingering abdominal pressure, Wang Ping’s yell carried an unusually sustained resonance.
The bear shuddered visibly, its gaze becoming vacant and unfocused. Clearly stunned by the unexpected auditory assault, it wobbled precariously.
Wang Ping’s deafening roar lasted nearly thirty seconds. By the time he released the bear’s ear, he himself felt lightheaded and oxygen-deprived, his vision swimming. His body swayed involuntarily, tipping forward.
But before he could fall, a larger form collapsed to the ground first.
“Thud!”
The bear pitched forward, burying its head between its legs and curling into a fetal position. A low groan escaped its lips as drool pooled beneath it. Wang Ping slid off its head, landing awkwardly on the leaf-covered ground.
Behind him, the sound of swallowing saliva accompanied a gust of rank breath washing over him. Shaken but calmer now, Wang Ping scrambled upright, eyeing the bear warily.
“Huff... puff...”
The bear struggled to lift its head, extending its front paws only to wobble dangerously and collapse again. After several failed attempts, it finally managed to stand on all fours.
“Growl~?”
Attempting to vocalize, the bear wore a bewildered expression, realizing it couldn’t even hear its own calls anymore. Its gaze shifted nervously toward Wang Ping, now tinged with fear.
It dawned on the bear that those two-legged creatures were indeed pathetic—but this small critter? Absolutely terrifying. Twice now, it had fallen victim to this pint-sized menace.
Enough! Wisdom dictated retreat; revenge could wait. Bears could be patient too—you’ll see!
Shaking its head groggily, the bear lumbered back toward the woods. Not five steps in, it tripped and fell, retreating clumsily into the forest depths. Whether it planned to lie in wait for another chance at vengeance or sought someone else to vent its frustration upon, who could say?
“Whew…”
Flopping onto the layer of fallen leaves, Wang Ping stared blankly at the sky above, his mind utterly empty.
