Chapter 99: Ruthless Measures Part 2
After confiscating the female prisoner’s bandages and escorting her and the policewoman out of Lion Manor, Leon returned stealthily post-investigation. He captured a high-ranking servant and used Soul Vision to extract information about their residences.
He’d visited the four crossed-off individuals, whose souls reeked of decay but bore no traces of having used the goat organ—a clear sign they weren’t the real targets.
Thomas Lion, ranked fourth on the list, was the representative of the Lion family involved in the Waterworks Company incident—the first to emit the scent of the goat’s heart. Though the black goat claimed he likely wasn’t the bearer, merely granted temporary power, and his soul tampered with to self-destruct upon leaking secrets, Leon decided to check anyway. Predictably, he found nothing.
That left Oliver Lion, a high official in the Department of Public Works currently handling a stalled railway project, absent from the estate—and thus skippable. Next up:
Bobby Lion.
Staring at the second name, Leon recalled the fate of the female prisoner’s husband. His brow furrowed slightly, almost hoping Bobby was the bearer.
Unfortunately, compared to his older brother—the current Duke of Lionheart—Bobby seemed disappointingly ordinary.
Though hardly unremarkable, the Duke’s rise to power was meteoric. Starting seventh in line, he eliminated rivals through mysterious means while garnering inexplicable support from family members, pulling off improbable victories time and again. Compared to such blatant suspiciousness, Bobby’s record, though flawed, appeared almost mundane.
Aside from his penchant for cruelty and scheming, Bobby fit the mold of a standard Lion noble—perhaps even diligent?
Gazing at the lit windows on the fifth floor, Leon hesitated between barging in now or waiting for lights-out.
But then, the shopping bag jolted violently, and the black goat’s voice rang out urgently:
"It’s him! Definitely him! Go now—I feel it. He just used his power in that room!"
So it’s him, huh? Killing two birds with one stone.
Confirming the target, Leon abandoned stealth. Kicking the Witch’s Broom into gear, he shot toward the window like an arrow.
BANG. SHATTER.
"Who’s there?!"
The young man, roughly twenty-seven or twenty-eight, leapt to his feet, ready to flee and call for guards. But as he reached the door, he froze, eyes gleaming with joy as they locked onto the shopping bag in Leon’s hand.
"You?"
"Yes… grrrrr…"
Having licked a hole in the bag to expose its mouth, the black goat prepared to taunt its counterpart. But barely uttering a syllable, it was silenced by a gust of wind.
Following Emma’s advice—"Never waste words with enemies unless extracting intel"—Leon unleashed the Witch’s Broom’s full potential upon smashing through the window. A torrent of glass shards, propelled by a fierce air current, surged toward the young man.
For extra insurance, Leon activated the Sacred Spirit Pendant, expending energy equivalent to a five-kilometer jog to crush the man’s soul.
THUD THUD THUD.
Sharp cracks echoed as glass pierced flesh, pinning the young man against the wall. Blood bloomed across violet walls in grotesque patterns.
"..."
Holy crap.
Freeing itself from the bag, the black goat stared, slack-jawed, at the near-crucified figure.
This is what you call not ruthless? What does ‘ruthless’ even look like to you?!
...
Just like that… solved?
Though the outcome aligned perfectly with his hopes, Leon felt a surreal disconnect. And...
A wave of nausea hit him.
Even though he'd confirmed the man’s corrupt soul moments after breaking the window—eliminating guilt over killing an innocent—watching the gore-soaked corpse made Leon’s stomach churn. His face lost color rapidly.
Backing away, he covered his nose with his sleeve, taking deep breaths. Before reinforcements arrived, he hurriedly prompted:
"Where’s your heart? Point it out!"
"Oh, oh!"
Snapping back, the black goat scanned the young man. Just as it opened its mouth to reveal the heart’s location, it suddenly shrieked.
"Leon! He—"
"I know."
Though nauseated, Leon hadn’t looked away. Spotting movement in the “corpse’s” eyes milliseconds before the black goat reacted, he unleashed the Sacred Spirit Pendant again, summoning egg-sized stones to shatter the man’s joints.
Uncertain how the man revived, Leon held nothing back. Before disabling the joints, he conjured needle-like projectiles, piercing vital points with relentless precision.
SHUNK SHUNK SHUNK.
In mere seconds, over a dozen crimson blooms erupted across the young man’s torso, including a neat hole through his forehead.
Yet despite the carnage, the man remained functional, staggering back to his chair and collapsing into it.
"Wonderful. Truly wonderful."
Dodging an invisible attack aimed at his vocal cords, the bloody-faced man grinned brightly at Leon.
"When I learned [the Horn] fell into that woman’s hands, I thought retrieving it impossible. I resigned myself to seeking the remaining five. Never did I imagine she’d give it to you."
Breathing heavily, Leon stared in shock as the young man spoke earnestly:
"You’re the new employee from the Cleansing Bureau, aren’t you? Thank you. You’ve done me a tremendous favor."
