After offering a respectful greeting, Thomas—who bore crow’s feet that hinted at his age—bowed deeply with unusual deference before the youthful man, who appeared to be in his late twenties or perhaps just shy of thirty.

"You flatter me, Master. Compared to you, my efforts are negligible."

"Ho ho, not quite."

Waving him inside, the young man chuckled amiably.

"My diligence stems from preparation—to ascend further. Not only do I intend to inherit my brother’s title, but I also aim to sit upon the seat of the family head.”

Observing beads of sweat forming on Thomas’s brow, the young man smiled knowingly.
