Chapter 96: Grandfather and Reconciliation

Though the policewoman had used the word "if," her slightly evasive gaze made it feel more like a direct statement than speculation.

After recovering from his initial shock, Leon looked at the hesitant policewoman in front of him and couldn't help but ask, "When you were going through the list, did you find something?"

"I did find something... but I'm not entirely sure yet, so it's just an 'if'..."

With a silent sigh, the policewoman picked up The Missing List and A Concise Record of the Lionheart Family Tree. She pointed to one of the crossed-out names, her expression grim as she whispered, "This person... shares the same name as your grandfather. He was a fairly talented mechanic who once competed with the former head of the family for control of Lion Arms Company."

"But because he didn’t have deep roots, after losing the battle, he not only lost his position at the company but was also forced out by the ex-head of the family. In the end, he had no choice but to move his entire family away from the capital and settle in... Lion County."

"..."

Same name, mechanic, Lion County... It was suspicious, but...

"That doesn’t automatically mean I’m part of the Lion family, does it?"

Leon furrowed his brow after thinking for a moment. "Lion County may be small, but its permanent population is still in the millions. The chances of someone having the same name aren’t exactly slim."

"It’s not just about sharing the same name."

Clearly, she’d entertained similar suspicions herself. After hearing Leon’s words, the policewoman shook her head and brought out a third book she’d prepared.

"Look, this is a photo from a ball years ago. The man on stage is your grandfather."

"You want me to identify him based on this picture?"

Leon glanced at the middle-aged man on stage—confident and full of life, but utterly unfamiliar. Frowning, he said, "I don’t really remember my grandfather due to certain circumstances, so..."

"Even if you don’t recognize him, doesn’t this person look familiar to you?"

She pointed to someone in the crowd below the stage, her tone laced with resignation. "This is your grandmother. Her appearance... well, let’s just say..."

She resembled a mature version of Anna.

Looking at the woman in the photo whose features bore a striking resemblance to his younger sister—except for a few minor details—even Leon had to admit that all of this was probably more than mere coincidence.

Returning to his seat with the three books, Leon flipped through them quickly, his brow furrowed as he cross-referenced genealogical records. What he discovered left him utterly speechless: if everything checked out, not only was he indeed part of the Lion family, but his rank wasn’t insignificant either. Even the current head of the Lion family would have to address him as "Uncle."

Granted, he was a distant relative with no inheritance or tangible assets to claim, and when it came to titles, he ranked somewhere beyond thirtieth place. Still, there was no denying that he was technically a member of the Lion family—and arguably part of a legitimate branch.

Good grief, could things get any more melodramatic?

As he sifted through mounting evidence linking him to the Lions, Leon found himself reluctantly admitting that he might actually belong to the family, whether he liked it or not. One or two coincidences could be chalked up to chance, but this many? That was harder to dismiss, especially given how much his grandmother resembled Anna.

This whole thing started as a pretext to investigate anomalies, but now it seemed they’d stumbled onto a family connection before even finding what they were looking for.

"Leon..."

Seeing him pinch the bridge of his nose, clearly troubled, the policewoman hesitated before asking again, "What are you going to do now?"

"What do you mean, 'what am I going to do'?"

"I mean about investigating the evidence of wrongdoing."

"One issue has nothing to do with the other. You go ahead and investigate however you see fit."

Waving her off dismissively, Leon pulled out pen and paper, jotting down relevant information while mulling over Anna’s concerns.

He was a transmigrator with no memories of his grandfather; everything he knew about his parents came secondhand from Anna. But Anna was different. Though their grandparents had died young from illness, judging by her age, Anna must have met them as a child. Perhaps she knew more about their origins.

Could this be the secret Anna had been keeping from him? If so, why hadn’t she wanted him to see these photos? And did such a revelation really warrant being kept hidden?

Lost in thought, Leon finished transcribing the records related to his grandfather. Folding the paper carefully, he tucked it into his pocket, intending to ask Anna about it later.

Glancing at the policewoman beside him, who looked like she wanted to say something but couldn’t quite bring herself to, Leon slid another sheet of notes toward her.

"Here. These are the people whose rise to power seems suspicious—I suspect some shady dealings might be involved. If you’re planning to dig into the Lion family, start with these individuals."

"Ah? Thanks..."

Accepting the "list of suspects," the policewoman gazed at Leon, who appeared calm once more. Clenching her fists, she murmured, "I never expected you to actually be part of the Lion family..."

"Hold it right there."

Raising a hand to signal a stop, Leon spoke earnestly. "My ‘Lion’ comes from Lion County, not Duke of Lionheart. At least, that’s not my intention, and since my family hasn’t mentioned anything about this, it’s clear they likely have no interest in claiming this connection either."

"So let’s leave it at that. From here on out, you can investigate the Lion family however you please. I have no ties to them whatsoever."

Pausing briefly, Leon reached for his notepad despite knowing the policewoman wasn’t the type to gossip. Better safe than sorry.

"Let’s consider this confidential. Only you and I know about it. If I find out anyone else learns of this..."

"Don’t bother writing it down. I’m not that kind of person."

Rolling her eyes at Leon’s overly cautious attitude, the policewoman felt an inexplicable sense of relief watching him distance himself so firmly from the Lion family. With a hint of admiration in her voice, she said, "The Lions may have a bad reputation, but they’re a noble family with over five hundred years of history. And your grandfather was part of the main line. I assumed you’d jump at the chance..."

"What you assume isn’t always true. Besides, how do you know I wasn’t lying earlier? Maybe I’ll turn around and go claim kinship with the Lions the moment you leave."

Interrupting her, Leon couldn’t help but offer some advice, considering she’d been honest about her findings instead of secretly investigating him behind his back. To prevent future trouble, he added, "You’re not a bad person, but you tend to act too impulsively. You make decisions without thinking them through."

"For example, knowing I might have ties to the Lions, why tell me outright? Or take the misunderstanding earlier—you were convinced I was a rebel based on flimsy evidence. Your judgments are too hasty. Next time, think twice before making decisions. Acting recklessly will only cause problems."

"I... I’m not completely thoughtless..."

Feeling a bit embarrassed at being called impulsive by someone younger, the policewoman flushed slightly and tried to defend herself. "I told you directly because I sensed you weren’t a bad person and wouldn’t collude with the Lions. As for why I thought you were a rebel... well, after hearing what you said to the editor-in-chief of The Daily Digest, who wouldn’t assume you were trouble?"
