Chapter 93: Sugar and the Lion's Den

"Ah!"

Watching the female prisoner slam headfirst into the metal wall of the carriage, her skull embedded halfway through it, the policewoman didn’t even have time to rub her own aching chest before she lunged forward to pull the now-motionless woman free from the dented surface.

"What happened? Why did you just... slam into the wall like that? Wake up! You—"

"You… just stop shouting for a second, will you?"

Leon patted her shoulder weakly as he leaned against her, his pulse rocketing past 160 beats per minute. Beads of cold sweat dripped down his face as he pressed his hands over his ringing ears, trying to catch his breath.

"She’s probably just knocked out. She isn’t dead… but good grief, would you shut up already? My ears are killing me..."

"How is that possible?"

The policewoman had no idea why the prisoner had done what she did, but one thing was clear—it had something to do with Leon. Frustrated, she shrugged off his hand and turned toward the crumpled section of the carriage wall, jabbing at it angrily.

"Look at this! Do you see how deep this dent is? It’s iron, for crying out loud! How could anyone hit it hard enough to warp it like this?"

"Forget the wall. Look at her head instead."

"And what good will that do? It’s iron, I tell you! If the wall got bent like this, how on earth is her skull still intact? Wait… what?"

After inspecting the prisoner’s head, the policewoman found no blood or broken bones—just an angry red bruise spreading across her forehead. Shock widened her eyes as she stared back and forth between the warped wall and the seemingly unharmed prisoner.

"This… this can't be real! How is it even possible? How can someone’s head be harder than iron?"

"Heh. Can you really call yourself a rebel if your head isn’t made of steel?"

Leon muttered absently, leaning heavily against the seat. His body felt hollowed out, drained of more than half its strength. Still catching his breath, he couldn’t help but feel grateful for his quick reflexes earlier.

When he’d noticed the prisoner about to smash her head into the wall, he’d immediately activated the Sacred Spirit Pendant, using its Will Interfering Reality ability to temporarily transform a small patch of the iron wall into something akin to rubber.

Initially, Leon planned to maintain the illusion long enough for the wall to return to its normal shape, ensuring the policewoman wouldn’t notice anything amiss. But the energy cost of the ability was far greater than expected. After only a split second of maintaining the “rubber” state, Leon felt his stamina plummet. Panicking, he released the pendant without waiting for the wall to fully rebound.

When the effect abruptly ended, reality snapped back into place, leaving the prisoner’s head wedged partially inside the warped metal. Fortunately, she hadn’t been pushed away by the impact, sparing her further injury.

---

Leaning back in his seat, Leon took a few moments to recover while watching the policewoman puzzle over the mysterious resilience of the prisoner’s skull. A faint smirk tugged at the corner of his lips as he finally checked the unconscious woman himself.

"Not bad. Aside from some swelling, there aren’t any serious injuries. Just a concussion, maybe."

"That’s a relief," the policewoman sighed. Though Leon wasn’t a doctor, hearing his assessment inexplicably eased her worry. Only then did she notice his pale complexion and trembling hands.

"You… are you okay? You’re looking awfully pale, and you're sweating buckets."

"..."

I deserve this, Leon thought bitterly. I knew people who develop anomalies tend to be extreme, yet I still underestimated her willingness to act rashly. Giving her the chance to struggle was a mistake.

His stomach growling and his body exhausted, Leon silently vowed never to repeat such carelessness. With a nonchalant shrug, he answered casually, "I don’t know. Maybe I’m hungry. Anyway, let’s talk about you. What exactly are you doing taking her to the Lion family estate?"

"It’s because of the assassination attempt on the Princess"

She hesitated mid-sentence, suddenly remembering Leon’s status as a so-called ‘rebel.’ Sharing sensitive information with him felt strange, but recalling his bizarre interrogation technique earlier, she decided to come clean.

"The firearms left behind by the rebels during the attack bore serial numbers linked to the Lions’ armory. And she insisted under questioning that those weapons were purchased directly from them. Are you feeling all right?"

Glancing at Leon’s pallor and the way his hand instinctively pressed against his stomach, the policewoman bit her lip. Then, rummaging through her pocket, she pulled out two candies and shoved them into his palm.

"Here. Eat these. Don’t expect me to babysit you if you pass out."

"..."

Even when offering kindness, you’ve got to throw in a snarky comment first, huh? Stubborn much?

Leon unwrapped the pink candy paper, revealing a heart-shaped milk caramel. Popping it into his mouth, he mumbled a thanks before continuing his line of questioning.

"So, what now? Are you heading to the Lion estate to confront them about the arms factory?"

"No. There’s something else I need to ask first."

Shaking her head, the policewoman glanced at the unconscious prisoner beside her, then clenched her jaw tightly.

"When they tried to assassinate Princess, this woman detonated a flour mill to create chaos. Dozens of workers died in the explosion. While she’s certainly not innocent, her actions—and the circumstances that drove her—are rooted in crimes committed by the Lion family years ago.”

“Someone has to dig into their past wrongdoings. The arms investigation can wait; others can handle that. But if I don’t look into what happened to her and her husband, no one else will. I owe it to them to uncover the truth and hold the guilty accountable."

"Well said. I hope you succeed."

Though Leon doubted she’d get very far before the Lions intervened, he respected her determination. Her ideals might be naive, her methods inexperienced, but she was striving to do the right thing. After a moment’s thought, he offered quietly:

"My abilities should speak for themselves—you saw how effective they were earlier. Most lies won’t slip past me. If you run into trouble while investigating, feel free to reach out. I’ll help however I can."

"..."

The policewoman blinked, caught off guard. Instead of mocking her resolve or dismissing her chances, here was Leon offering genuine support. Gratitude mingled with awkwardness as she murmured a barely audible thank-you, refusing to meet his gaze.

Stubborn little thing…

Suppressing a sigh, Leon added, partly out of gratitude for the candy:

"Just be careful. The Lions play dirty. Even with your connections, they may not hesitate to target you if provoked."

"Don’t worry. I’m prepared."

Nodding firmly, the policewoman’s expression grew grim.

"Every case I’ve worked on lately points back to the Lions. To prepare, I’ve reviewed nearly every file available on their family. Believe me, I understand exactly how ruthless and unethical they are. I won’t let my guard down."

"Good. Stay sharp, then."

Satisfied that she understood the risks, Leon leaned back in his seat, letting the sweetness of the caramel linger on his tongue. He closed his eyes, hoping to regain some strength. But barely a moment passed before he felt a light tap on his thigh.

"Don’t just lecture me. What about you?"

Her voice softened slightly as she regarded the only member of the Lion family who didn’t entirely disgust her.

"You’re going to the Lion estate too, aren’t you? I’m heading there to expose their crimes. So why are you going?"

"I’m going to reconnect with my roots."

"????????"
