Chapter 111: Can This Thing... Be Eaten?

Whether it was meant as comfort or mockery, Wang Ping finished his internal monologue and turned to follow the scent trail left by someone.

But after just two steps, an idea suddenly bubbled up uncontrollably in his mind.

"Did I just take down a black bear? Should I snap a pic for the memory?"

The more he thought about it, the harder it became to suppress the mischievous urge growing inside him. Without further ado, he shed his "vest," propped his waist bag on the ground, and fished out Gu Lang’s phone. After launching the camera app, he positioned himself at an angle to capture the black bear lying by the stream, then set a ten-second delay timer.

Placing the phone against the waist bag, Wang Ping sprinted back to stand beside the unconscious bear. He struck a pose next to its head, flexing his tiny arm to mimic a bicep curl.

Click. A soft shutter sound later, the image of a honey badger—standing triumphantly over a fallen black bear—was forever immortalized on the phone's screen.

Retrieving the phone, Wang Ping stared at his first-ever selfie in this bizarre new existence. His lips curled into a silent grin before he slung the waist bag back over his shoulder and resumed his journey.

The scent trail stretched along the creek, winding southwest toward the ridge. Originally planning to use the drone to scout ahead, Wang Ping hesitated, fearing he might lose the trail entirely if he took to the air. Instead, he trudged onward on foot.

Somewhere in the back of his mind, Wang Ping recalled that the drone’s battery life wasn’t exactly stellar. As a precaution, he plugged in the power bank halfway through—but whether it would fully recharge the device remained uncertain.

What is the limit of human endurance when running at full speed? Experts still debate not how far one can run but rather what constitutes humanity’s true breaking point. For Wang Ping, in his human form, twenty kilometers with a load was manageable—a testament to years of rigorous training. However, judging from Gu Lang’s frail physique, Wang Ping doubted the man could make it past two kilometers without collapsing face-first onto the ground, gasping for air.

But irony struck swiftly, like a tornado sweeping through calm skies. By now, Wang Ping had already covered twice that distance following Gu Lang’s scent—and yet, there was no sign of the man anywhere.

Had Gu Lang’s navigation system gone offline? Without GPS or his phone, it came as no surprise that Gu Lang’s route had devolved into aimless wandering. Wang Ping was certain of one thing: the idiot was most definitely lost again.

"Where the hell did he go?"

Wang Ping sighed in frustration as he glanced up at the sunlight filtering through the canopy. Finding a shady spot beneath a tree, he decided to rest for a moment.

This endless trek was exhausting even for a honey badger. How Gu Lang managed to keep going was beyond comprehension.

Gurgle~

His stomach chimed in with a timely reminder, protesting loudly from beneath the waist bag. It seemed hunger wouldn’t wait any longer.

In such rugged terrain, walking itself was the most energy-draining activity. To make matters worse, Wang Ping hadn’t quite mastered quadrupedal locomotion. Instead, he relied on wobbly bipedal strides, stumbling awkwardly through the underbrush.

It wasn’t pride keeping him upright; Wang Ping had attempted running on all fours multiple times to save time. But balancing on four limbs proved far trickier than anticipated. Most attempts ended with him tripping over his own feet and face-planting into the dirt. Climbing trees, ironically, felt easier than walking on all fours.

"Damn, I wish Dahei were here."

Ignoring his rumbling belly, Wang Ping leaned against the tree trunk, lost in thought.

GRRR!!

Apparently offended by being ignored, his stomach growled louder, almost threatening rebellion.

"For crying out loud! Can’t you give me a break?"

Annoyed, Wang Ping smacked his belly and muttered a curse under his breath. Rising reluctantly, he scanned the wilderness around him, unsure where to find food. Surely bugs weren’t on the menu?

As he surveyed the forest, something caught his eye—a plant partially hidden beneath ferns. At its tip sat a cluster of bright red berries, each about the size of a pea. Their vivid crimson hue stood out starkly against the lush green backdrop.

"Can this thing... be eaten?"

Curiosity piqued, Wang Ping pushed aside the surrounding leaves to examine the plant more closely. Below the berries, circular mint-like green leaves fanned outward, some forming a perfect five-pointed star pattern.

"Hmm, could this thing be poisonous?"

Though his current form boasted immunity to snake venom, toxic plants were another story entirely. There was no guarantee he’d fare well against them.

"Wait, I’ve got internet access! Why not ask someone?"

Reaching into his waist bag, Wang Ping pulled out Gu Lang’s phone. Who to ask, though? Poking around Gu Lang’s social circle was risky—if anyone mentioned it later, things could get awkward. Better to consult strangers online.

Opening the phone, his eyes lit up when he spotted the chat app icon. Tongue poking out in concentration, he tapped it open. Thankfully, Gu Lang’s account was auto-logged in. Several group chats blinked with unread messages.

Wang Ping entered one called “Old Drivers Depart,” snapped a photo of the mysterious plant, and posted it with a simple question: “What’s this?”

Almost instantly, replies poured in:

CatLord: Looks like ginseng.

BoundlessJoy: Definitely ginseng, probably cultivated. Wild ones don’t look this pristine.

PartingIsSuchSweetSorrow: Oh ho! Isn’t someone always bragging about their vitality? Starting early on tonics, huh?”

So this was what ginseng looked like? Fascinating.

Wang Ping raised an eyebrow, scrolled through the comments, and began typing a reply. Just as he was about to send a polite “Thanks,” hesitation struck. With deliberate care, he erased the words and instead typed, “Buzz off.” Then hit send.

Pocketing the phone, he approached the ginseng plant.

“I’ve heard old folks say this stuff can move. Let’s see if that’s true!”

GURGLE!!

His stomach rumbled eagerly, urging him to hurry up.

Meanwhile, miles away, Gu Lang collapsed panting in a grove of identical-looking trees. Sweat dripped down his face as he stared blankly at his surroundings, utterly disoriented. While he vaguely remembered fleeing earlier, reconstructing the exact path he’d taken was impossible.

Glancing at his watch, then squinting upward through the dense canopy, he noted the sun hanging mockingly behind him. Its position hinted southwest, suggesting northeast lay ahead—but which way should he go?

"Mm, Greater Khingan Range is east of Beijing’s meridian. At noon, the sun sits slightly west of south... so theoretically, northeast should be..." Gu Lang mumbled to himself, brows furrowed. "...Wait, screw it. Which freaking direction am I supposed to take?!"
