Chapter 106: Siberian rat snake
As someone cautiously shifted their position, the snake hidden in the grass gradually revealed itself fully, coming into view for both the man and the badger—and also appearing on the live-stream camera.
"That’s just a ‘black worm,’ right?" A comment quietly floated across the live-stream chat.
"What’s a ‘black worm’?"
"Same question—what’s a ‘black worm’?"
"To the previous comment, I’m not well-read, but isn’t this a Siberian rat snake?"
"Siberian rat snake +1. People in my neighborhood keep them as pets."
The audience erupted into lively discussion, with some typing furiously to search online for “Siberian rat snake” and “black worm.” When they discovered the two terms were one and the same, many gleefully began sharing their newfound knowledge in the chat.
The Siberian rat snake, also known as the pine flower snake or yellow-flowered pine snake, is called “black worm” in certain northern regions. In these areas, snakes are often referred to as “long worms,” hence the nickname "black worm," which roughly translates to “a dark-colored snake.”
Unlike the palpable tension between Wang Ping and Gu Lang, the atmosphere in the live-stream was lighthearted and cheerful. After all, everyone now knew this snake was harmless—not only non-venomous but famously timid.
To put it kindly, the Siberian rat snake is a mild-mannered species that primarily hunts field mice and birds, rarely attacking anything else unless provoked. But let’s be honest—it’s the epitome of a pushover, only reacting when directly threatened.
Years ago, this snake nearly went extinct in the land of insatiable appetites after people discovered how delicious it was. Hunters didn’t even bother with protective gear; they’d simply grab the snakes by the neck and toss them into sacks. If bitten, they shrugged it off—the snake’s bite force was weaker than a woman’s grip.
For a long time, collection points for snakes could be found near forestry areas and even in rural convenience stores across northeastern China. People would routinely bring bags of Siberian rat snakes to weigh and sell, while shopkeepers would sift through the bundles, wary of venomous snakes sneaking in as imposters.
Eventually, conservation measures were implemented, saving the species from the brink of extinction. Nowadays, aside from farmed snakes destined for meat or the pet trade (thanks to their docile nature), wild Siberian rat snakes have become scarce. You’d only find them deep within untouched forests like this one.
“Coward streamer meets coward snake—what a match!”
“Streamer, don’t chicken out! Go tame it!”
“How can you call cautiousness being scared?”
“Hahaha, Boss Buzz-Cut’s reaction is priceless!”
“Snake: There’s a buzz-cut bro over there—I’m freaking out!”
“Buzz-Cut Bro: There’s a snake over there—I’m freaking out!”
“Strange… why does Buzz-Cut look like he’s seen a ghost?”
“Aren’t honey badgers supposed to love eating snakes?”
“Maybe because it’s not venomous?”
“So Buzz-Cut fears non-venomous snakes but not venomous ones?”
“Lol—rejected by Buzz-Cut!”
“Peak snake life!”
By now, Gu Lang was practically sweating bullets. Snakes terrified Wang Ping, but they absolutely petrified Gu Lang.
However, Wang Ping had no intention of stepping up. No matter how much Gu Lang called out to him, the badger remained silent, pretending to be dead by keeping his head low. Internally, he cursed the streamer: You big coward, afraid of a snake? Pathetic!
Seeing no immediate threat, the coiled Siberian rat snake slowly began slithering back into the grass, planning its escape.
But snakes, lacking legs, rely entirely on their bodies to move, using their abdominal muscles to propel themselves forward in sinuous curves. This twisting motion can easily cause misunderstandings.
When the snake suddenly changed direction, the streamer panicked, thinking it was about to strike. With a shriek, he flung his walking stick toward it.
Wang Ping watched the spinning staff fly past and the startled snake coil up again, utterly speechless.
“So… you threw your weapon away just so I’d go first?”
Still, Wang Ping started to notice something odd about this particular snake—it seemed unusually timid.
Most snakes Wang Ping had encountered before were venomous varieties from abroad, particularly vipers and cobras, which were fairly common. However, since Wang Ping was terrified of snakes, teammates usually handled them whenever they appeared. Wang Ping’s closest encounter with a snake had been on the Maasai Mara plains, where a puff adder bit him and knocked him unconscious.
“Damn it, last time it was like this, and now again? When will you grow up, Gu Lang?”
Wang Ping muttered under his breath, reluctantly inching closer to the Siberian rat snake. Though he feared snakes, he understood it was mostly psychological. His current body wasn’t afraid of venomous snakes, and judging by this snake’s meek demeanor, its toxicity was questionable at best.
Before Wang Ping could take more than a few steps, Gu Lang made his move. Realizing too late that throwing the walking stick was a mistake, Gu Lang bent down, picked up a stick, and began waving it menacingly at the snake while making sharp hissing sounds.
The snake’s coiled head twitched slightly, flicking its tongue.
Gu Lang continued advancing, threateningly brandishing the stick. When he got close enough, he jabbed it beneath the snake’s body, intending to launch it into the woods.
“Come on, Gu Lang, you’ve got this! Keep going!” Wang Ping silently cheered from behind, stopping mid-step.
“Heh!”
With a shout, Gu Lang lifted his arm, tossing the entire length of the Siberian rat snake into the air.
Whether it was due to Gu Lang’s nervous overexertion or the stick’s unexpected springiness, halfway through the motion, Wang Ping watched helplessly as the bent stick snapped back, launching the meter-long snake straight onto Gu Lang’s face.
Wang Ping: …
“Wha—?! Oh crap!!”
A despairing scream erupted from Gu Lang. Frantically retreating, he grabbed the snake and flung it away, then collapsed trembling against a tree, clutching his arm.
“Did it bite you?”
Startled, Wang Ping rushed over, guilt washing over him. Gu Lang wasn’t one of his trained teammates, and sending an amateur like him to handle the situation had been reckless.
“Where did it bite you?”
Wang Ping scrambled to inspect Gu Lang’s arm, but the man stubbornly kept his right hand clamped over his left shoulder. No amount of prodding could get him to release his grip.
“Waaah… I’m gonna die…”
Gu Lang leaned despondently against the tree, lips quivering, tears welling up in the corners of his eyes.
“Don’t cry yet! Let’s check if we can still save you!”
Wang Ping scanned the surroundings, his gaze finally settling on Gu Lang’s belt.
Hmm… If we tie off his arm with the belt immediately, maybe we can stop the venom from spreading.
Without hesitation, Wang Ping stepped onto Gu Lang’s thigh, leaning forward to claw at his belt buckle.
“…Boss, after I die, I’m counting on you and Dahei to take care of Grandma…” Gu Lang sobbed pitifully.
“For crying out loud! Why won’t this damn belt come undone?!” Wang Ping exclaimed, sweat pouring down his face. Hearing Gu Lang continue to wail, he lost his temper.
“Die your head off! I’m trying to save you here! You’re not helping, and you’re giving up already?!”
“Waaah… but… I don’t wanna die!”
Gu Lang burst into full-blown sobs, grabbing Wang Ping and burying his face in the badger’s fur.
“Hey! Hey! What the hell—”
Wang Ping struggled, but Gu Lang was clinging to him with all his might, leaving the badger trapped despite his efforts. By the time Wang Ping managed to break free, it was probably too late to do anything useful.
Sighing deeply, Wang Ping gave up resisting, letting Gu Lang hold on.
“Fine, consider this your final comfort… Damn it, it’s all my fault!”
Overwhelmed with regret, Wang Ping sank into self-reproach. The forest fell silent except for the wind and Gu Lang’s increasingly dramatic cries.
After about ten minutes, feeling his fur grow damp and sensing no decrease in Gu Lang’s strength, Wang Ping began to suspect something was off.
“Uh… buddy, I’m not cursing you or anything, but given the distance between your wound and your heart, shouldn’t you be dead by now?”
