Chapter 105: There’s a Snake!

After running uphill along the slope for about a hundred meters, Wang Ping came to a halt under a tree. He shook his fur, scattering droplets of sweat and dirt. Behind him, Gu Lang was wheezing like an old steam engine, but Wang Ping didn’t pay much attention to that. Instead, he noticed something else: the air here felt heavier, more humid than before. The ferns and shrubs growing among the trees were thicker, more vibrant, almost as if they’d stepped into a denser part of the forest.

Smack!

A loud slap echoed through the quiet woods. Wang Ping turned around just in time to see Gu Lang swatting at his own cheek with wide-eyed horror.

“Holy crap!” Gu Lang yelped, staring at his palm like it had betrayed him. “That mosquito was HUGE!”

Without another word, Gu Lang scrambled to open his backpack, rummaging through its contents until he pulled out a bottle of insect repellent. With frantic urgency, he began spraying himself all over, muttering curses under his breath.

Ugh, he forgot everything important but brought this useless junk instead! What kind of idiot does that?

Wang Ping rolled his eyes so hard he might’ve gotten dizzy. Turning away from the spectacle, he leaned against the tree trunk and tilted his head toward the deeper parts of the forest. Amidst the rustling of pine needles carried by the wind, he thought he heard something—a faint plop, like an object hitting water. It wasn’t clear enough to be certain, though, and the sound of flowing water still eluded them. But one thing was obvious: wherever there was splashing, there had to be water nearby.

Just as Wang Ping was about to signal Gu Lang to keep moving, he froze mid-step. Something felt…off. Gu Lang had casually tossed the repellent back into his bag and stood up, looking completely normal—if you ignored the fact that the drone controller dangling from his waist no longer had a drone attached to it.

Gu Lang, where the hell is my drone?! Wang Ping growled, his voice low and dangerous.

The drone had been painstakingly lugged up the mountain by none other than Wang Ping himself. He’d been dreaming of flying it ever since they started their trek. And now, thanks to Gu Lang’s incompetence, it was gone after barely being used?

You owe me a new drone! Wang Ping snarled, baring his teeth and rolling up imaginary sleeves, ready to throw hands if necessary.

Gu Lang, who had been about to take a step forward, froze mid-motion. His foot hovered awkwardly above the ground as confusion spread across his face.

What now?

At this point, Wang Ping didn’t care about finding water anymore—it wasn’t him who was thirsty anyway. If Gu Lang couldn’t recover the missing drone, then fine; let him drink dust for all Wang Ping cared. With short, angry strides, the honey badger spun on his heel and stormed back toward Gu Lang, fully prepared to give him a piece of his mind. But just as he took a few steps, a rustling sound came from the bushes nearby.

“What the heck is that?”

Wang Ping instinctively stopped, ears perked, scanning the area for the source of the noise. Oddly enough, the moment he froze, the rustling ceased entirely.

“Did I imagine it?”

He frowned, glancing around suspiciously. All he could hear now was the gentle hum of the wind weaving through the pines and the occasional chirp of birds. Nothing else seemed out of place.

“Damn, I must be losing it,” Wang Ping muttered, shaking his head. He resumed walking, only for the rustling to start again almost immediately after he moved.

This time, Wang Ping was absolutely sure he hadn’t imagined it.

In the live stream chat, viewers watched as Wang Ping—who moments ago had been stomping angrily toward the camera—suddenly slowed down, tiptoeing cautiously like someone navigating a minefield. Every few steps, he’d stop to peer around suspiciously, as if expecting treasure (or trouble) to pop out of thin air.

“What’s wrong with Boss?”

“Is there something on the ground?”

“Why did Boss get mad all of a sudden?”

“I think I know…”

“The streamer totally deserves whatever’s coming.”

“I have a bad feeling about this…”

“Now you mention it, I’m kinda scared too…”

Meanwhile, Gu Lang—who initially found Wang Ping’s odd behavior amusing—began to feel uneasy when he finally heard the rustling himself during Wang Ping’s third attempt to move forward.

“Oh sht, there’s something in the bushes!”

Gu Lang instinctively crouched down, whispering nervously. As soon as the words left his mouth, Wang Ping shot him a glare sharp enough to cut glass. Gu Lang clamped his mouth shut and fumbled for his walking stick, gripping it tightly like a weapon.

It was strange—the rustling only occurred when Wang Pink moved. The instant he stopped to investigate, the sound vanished without a trace. After several tries, Wang Ping finally pinpointed its origin: a patch of tall grass roughly “one badger” high off to their left.

The noise sounded like someone dragging a rope across dry leaves.

An unsettling thought crossed Wang Ping’s mind, causing his fur to bristle.

For fck’s sake, please don’t tell me it’s a snake…

As soon as the word “snake” entered his thoughts, his traitorous brain conjured up an image of snake meat stew simmering in a pot. His stomach growled loudly in response.

Not you again! Shut up and stop interfering!

Wang Ping slapped his belly irritably, silently cursing his insatiable appetite. Why did this body insist on craving food at the worst possible times? Was it because his previous life ended with a literal hole punched through his gut? He shook off the absurd tangent and focused on the suspicious patch of grass ahead.

Staring intently, Wang Ping eventually spotted a section of color that didn’t match the surrounding earth. Black scales patterned with dull yellow stripes emerged from the shadows—a snake, coiled silently beneath the foliage.

It really is a snake!

Testing his theory, Wang Ping cautiously shifted his weight, taking a single step backward toward Gu Lang. Sure enough, the moment he moved, the previously motionless snake slithered forward. When Wang Ping stopped, the snake paused as well.

What’s it doing? Passing through? Or lying in wait to ambush us?

For the first time in ages, Wang Ping felt a flicker of fear.

Gu Lang, still unaware of the exact situation, gripped his walking stick tighter, beads of sweat forming on his palms. Whatever lurked in those bushes, Wang Ping’s reaction made it clear that it wasn’t friendly.

Standing frozen in place wasn’t solving anything. Wang Ping glanced around, picked up a rotting branch lying nearby, and hurled it at the bush.

Hey! Show yourself, monster! Whether you’re passing through or hiding, we’re onto you!

Thwack!

His aim was terrible. The branch veered wildly off course, smacking into the trunk of a tree behind the bush before bouncing back and landing squarely atop the foliage. The bushes erupted into movement, and a dark shape twisted violently, coiling upward defensively.

And just like that, both Gu Lang and Wang Ping got a good look at what they were dealing with.

“There’s a snake!!”

Gu Lang’s panicked shout startled even Wang Ping, who flinched visibly. Courage, once shaken, rarely holds steady—and Wang Ping wasn’t exactly brimming with bravery to begin with.

Glancing down at his small, furry paws, then at Gu Lang’s sturdy metal walking stick, Wang Ping made a split-second decision. Without hesitation, he bolted straight toward Gu Lang.

“Boss! There’s a snake! A SNAKE!”

Gu Lang, predictably, lost his composure entirely. Pointing wildly at the snake in the bushes, he screamed at the top of his lungs while Wang Ping scurried behind him, using the human as a shield. The message was crystal clear: deal with it, or else.

Gu Lang stared blankly at the scene unfolding before him.

Who said honey badgers love eating snakes?! WHO SAID THAT?! Get out here and fight it yourself!
