Chapter 104: How Do You Fly This Thing Back?
Watching Gu Lang completely ignore him, lost in his own world as he pulled out his phone and slotted it into the drone controller’s mount, Wang Ping frowned—his little furry face scrunched up with displeasure—and slumped under a nearby tree.
The streamer fiddled with his phone, first connecting to the portable Wi-Fi hotspot that had nearly gotten him killed in East Africa, then downloading the drone’s control app. Afterward, he linked the phone to the camera mounted on the drone. Once everything was set up, Gu Lang flipped the switch on the drone, and the screen in his hand immediately displayed what the lens was capturing. Even though Wang Ping reluctantly admitted this was a clever move—one he hadn’t anticipated—it didn’t change the fact that drones were more like toys to him than tools. Still, this was how they were supposed to be used.
“Wow… this camera’s pretty good! The footage is sharp,” Gu Lang said with satisfaction, nodding to himself as he placed the drone on the ground before him, ready for takeoff.
Wang Ping pouted as he watched the drone’s propellers start spinning. With an irritated flick of his paw, he yanked at a young purple fern (commonly known as bull’s hair) next to him until it was nothing but a bare stalk.
“Damn it, I was supposed to fly it!”
Truthfully, if Wang Ping had insisted at that moment, he might have been able to snatch the drone away from Gu Lang. But something about Gu Lang’s actions reminded him of their predicament. Flying alongside the drone would’ve been fine, but holding the remote while doing so? That seemed suspiciously over-the-top—even for someone like him. Unless Gu Lang outright admitted it was all thanks to his teaching, which wasn’t likely.
Wang Ping didn’t want to be flying through the air while some random guy held the controls below. So instead, one paw idly scratched at the dirt beside him, while the other rested on his thigh. Deep in thought, the honey badger plotted his next move.
It looked like he’d need to find an opportunity to trick Gu Lang into giving him a lesson on operating the drone—even if it was just for show. As long as Gu Lang bought it, he could use that endorsement to avoid being labeled as too "unnatural" by the ever-watchful internet audience.
After all, honey badgers were already famous for their intelligence in the animal kingdom, weren’t they?
Finally freed after being torn into three pieces, the poor purple fern escaped Wang Pin's relentless grip. Brushing off his paws, Wang Ping stood up and walked over to Gu Lang, feigning curiosity as he peered at the controller in his hands.
Hearing the crunch of leaves behind him, Gu Lang glanced back at Wang Ping. Perhaps remembering how fascinated Wang Ping had been with the drone since the beginning, Gu Lang crossed his legs and sat down, motioning for the honey badger to come closer and watch him operate it.
On the live stream screen, viewers could see Gu Lang holding the drone’s remote, the phone attached to it displaying the aerial footage captured by the drone. But moments later, a small white-furred head popped up from beneath the bottom edge of the screen, blocking the live feed entirely. It felt like switching from first-person to third-person perspective mid-game, except the “character” now obstructing the view was a fluffy critter.
While a few hardcore drone enthusiasts grumbled in the chat, most viewers didn’t seem bothered. After all, who cared about aerial shots when you could stare at Boss Buzz-Cut’s adorable antics—even if it was just the back of his head?
“Well, since you’re so interested in the drone that you even carried it up the mountain, I guess you don’t actually know how to use it yet, huh?” Gu Lang’s voice echoed through the live stream.
For some reason, despite Wang Ping clearly being the sidekick here, the sight of the honey badger obediently watching the live footage made everyone imagine a father teaching his child how to play with a toy.
“Illusion! All illusions!”
A chorus of disappointed viewers glued their eyes to the screen, hoping the honey badger would stir up some trouble.
Behind Wang Ping, his tiny fuzzy ears twitched as he focused on the aerial footage displayed on the phone. He watched Gu Lang maneuver the drone up to a hundred meters above them, providing a bird’s-eye view of the forest below.
Seeing the forest from above was different from seeing it on the ground. On foot, they noticed dense rows of tree trunks stretching endlessly outward, with only glimpses of sky peeking through tangled branches overhead. From above, however, the canopy appeared as a vast, undulating sea of green, hugging the hills and valleys below.
The drone circled around once, and both man and honey badger stared intently at the screen, searching for any breaks or gaps in the endless expanse of treetops. Unfortunately, unless it was a wide river, narrow streams cutting through such massive ancient forests wouldn’t interrupt the dense foliage. Try as he might, Gu Lang couldn’t spot anything promising.
Expecting high-tech solutions to yield results, only to come up empty-handed left Gu Lang feeling disheartened. His tone dipped noticeably lower.
Meanwhile, Wang Ping’s attention was drawn elsewhere. Just as Gu Lang began sighing in frustration, Wang Ping noticed a brief flash of light flicker in the southeastern corner of the canopy, momentarily illuminating the phone screen.
The honey badger squinted instinctively. In the blink of an eye, the image cleared again. Below the lens, the expansive primeval forest swayed gently in the breeze, its rustling leaves creating waves of sound akin to the ocean’s tide.
“Southeast direction, huh?”
Wang Ping’s ears twitched again as he tilted his head, listening closely. Aside from the occasional snap of branches and rustle of leaves carried by the wind, there was no other noise coming from that direction.
“We’ll need to get closer…”
Lost in thought and forgetting about the live-stream camera trained on him, Wang Ping absentmindedly lifted his paw toward the joystick in front of him.
“Hey, boss, stop messing around! I’ll let you try later!”
Gu Lang raised his arm, lifting the controller out of reach, leaving Wang Ping’s paw grasping at thin air.
Wang Ping: …
What the hell? Who’s the one causing trouble here?
Seeing that Wang Ping wasn’t reacting aggressively, Gu Lang brought the controller back down and guided the drone in another loop. However, after circling back and forth, he started losing track of directions.
Just then, the phone screen flashed white again, followed by another blinding glare.
This time, Gu Lang saw it too, letting out a startled exclamation.
“What the hell?! What is that? Is this camera crap or something? Why does it keep reflecting light?”
Wang Ping resisted the urge to roll his eyes.
Is this seriously reflection? Gu Lang, maybe it’s the water sloshing around in your brain that’s causing the glare!
With zero patience left for dealing with idiots playing pilot, Wang Ping stood up, kicked Gu Lang hard in the arm shielding his body, turned around, and leapt to the ground, gazing toward the southeast.
“Wakakaka! Got it! Totally worth recording the whole time!”
In the live chat, a seemingly unhinged comment drifted lazily across the screen.
“What did you record?”
“Wow, that kick from Boss earlier was so cute!”
“I wanna pet Boss so badly!”
“Trash streamer, always making Boss mad.”
“Boss kicking the streamer live!”
“Share the clip already!”
“Seeds please, seeds~~”
“Boss just gave us another meme-worthy moment, hehe.”
“LittleFriendLily gifted the streamer with a rocket x1…”
“We don’t create memes; we’re just carriers of Boss’s expressions.”
Gu Lang watched Wang Ping storm off in confusion, utterly baffled. Before he could ask what was wrong, Wang Ping took off walking toward the southeast.
“Hey! Boss, where are you going?”
Gu Lang scrambled to his feet and hurried after him, simultaneously fiddling with the controller to bring the drone back. But after a few clumsy attempts, he looked up, hopelessly lost.
He couldn’t tell which way was which anymore, and without a clear line of sight through the dense canopy, every patch of forest looked identical on the camera feed.
So… how exactly was he supposed to fly this thing back?
