Chapter 102: I Swear, This Is Absolutely the Last One!

Feeling the weight in his paw, a certain honey badger nodded with satisfaction. He pulled his arm out of the tree hollow, clutching a handful of pine nuts—only to realize that he'd accidentally dragged out a gray-furred squirrel clinging desperately to his claws.

Wang Ping: …… ̄3 ̄|||

At this moment, the squirrel was completely oblivious to any impending danger, too far gone in its madness to even glance at the honey badger. Its tiny limbs were wrapped tightly around Wang Ping's paw as it frantically tried to pry loose the precious pine nuts wedged between his claws, shoving them into its own mouth.

These are my reserves! All mine!

"Tsks, tsk!" Wang Ping smirked, leaning back against the trunk and plopping down right outside the squirrel’s doorway. "Brave little critter, aren’t you? You’re starting to grow on me."

With one deft motion, he grabbed the squirrel by the scruff of its neck like a mother hen lifting a chick, yanked it off his arm, and flung it casually over his shoulder.

"Eeek!"

The squirrel went spinning through the air, landing on a cluster of pine branches below. The impact shook the needles violently, sending leaves fluttering to the ground.

Meanwhile, Wang Ping flicked his tail, sweeping away dust and debris from a nearby branch. He placed the pile of pine nuts neatly in front of him, plucked one up, and popped it into his mouth.

"Crunch."

His sharp teeth cracked open the shell, and his dexterous tongue scooped out the kernel before spitting the empty husk aside.

"Hmm, not bad. Pretty fragrant. Though the kernels could be bigger…"

Nearby, the squirrel had managed to untangle itself from a heap of long pine needles and spotted Wang Ping munching away on its stash. With an outraged squeal, it scrambled back up the tree, ready to reclaim what was rightfully its.

This particular tree belonged to the Chinese red pine species, known for its needle-like leaves bundled together in tufts resembling horse tails—hence the name "horse-tail pine." The cones of these trees in the Greater Khingan Mountains were much larger than average, producing oversized pine nuts in abundance. A single tree could sustain an entire family of squirrels through the harsh winter months.

But for Wang Ping? The handful he’d just grabbed barely amounted to more than a snack.

Pine nuts, like peanuts, were rich in fats and oils, making them incredibly filling. Just a few bites were enough to silence the grumbling in his stomach, leaving him pleasantly sated as his digestive system hummed happily along. Of course, while hunger might have subsided, Wang Ping wouldn’t truly feel full until he’d devoured every last nut—and possibly the squirrel itself.

As the squirrel watched yet another portion of its hoard disappear, it lunged forward once again, determined to snatch the remaining pile from Wang Ping’s grasp. But before its tiny paws could even graze the nuts, the honey badger seized it by the neck and hurled it away once more.

"Squeeeak!"

This time, Wang Ping put a bit more force into the throw. The gray blur traced a perfect arc through the air, disappearing beyond the treetops.

Down below, Gu Lang stood staring upward, shading his eyes with his hand as he searched for signs of his boss. His face was etched with worry.

"Boss… are you still up there? Hurry up, we need to get going!"

Cupping his hands around his mouth, he shouted toward the canopy. No sooner had the words left his lips than something small and furry came tumbling down from above—a certain squirrel, limbs akimbo, wide-eyed, and screaming all the way.

"Thud!"

The fluffy bundle hit the ground next to Gu Lang, bouncing slightly on the layer of fallen leaves.

"...Poor thing," Gu Lang muttered sympathetically, crouching down to check if the squirrel was alright. Before he could touch it, though, the creature twitched its legs, rolled over, and sprang to its feet, shrieking as it dashed back toward the towering pine.

Gu Lang: …What exactly did Boss do up there? Look how worked up this poor critter is…

Thanks to his strong jaws, Wang Ping ate pine nuts almost as quickly as the squirrels themselves. In no time at all, a sizable pile of discarded shells had accumulated around him.

When he heard Gu Lang calling from below, Wang Ping slapped his forehead.

"Ah crap, forgot about him being hungry too!"

Reaching into the tree hollow again, he pulled out another generous handful. Standing on a sturdy branch, he glanced down at Gu Lang waiting below.

"Roar!"

He barked loudly to catch Gu Lang’s attention, then tossed the pine nuts downward in a graceful arc.

"SQUEAK!!"

The squirrel, which had only just climbed back up, watched in utter despair as its hard-earned treasure rained down onto the forest floor. Its heart shattered into a million pieces.

My pine nuts!

"Holy shit..."

Gu Lang jumped back as the cascade of nuts pelted him in the face. Scrambling to gather them up, he cursed under his breath.

The squirrel hesitated, torn between descending to reclaim its lost bounty or staying put. Just as it wavered, Wang Ping brushed off his paws, shot it a sidelong glance, and reached nonchalantly back into the tree hollow.

Mmm… I’ve already finished the last batch.

"Squeak!"

"SQUEAK SQUEAK!"

The squirrel launched itself at Wang Ping, slapping at his arms in what looked suspiciously like a sobbing tantrum. It was a scene so pitiful it would have moved even the coldest of hearts.

"Back off, will ya? So stingy! There are plenty of other trees around here. Go collect more after I’m done!"

Perhaps feeling a twinge of guilt—or perhaps simply because he’d taken enough—the honey badger refrained from throwing the squirrel this time. Instead, he pushed its head gently aside and resumed rummaging inside the hollow.

By the time Wang Ping withdrew his paw holding yet another handful of pine nuts, the squirrel had given up trying to fight him. Resigned to its fate, it stationed itself protectively in front of the hollow, glaring at him with wary eyes.

Below, Gu Lang sat cross-legged, his expression sour as he clutched his chin. After struggling for several minutes, he finally managed to crack open a single nut—but with such excessive force that the kernel crumbled into bits. Disappointed, he spat out the shell and sighed heavily.

Looking at the small pile of nuts he’d gathered, Gu Lang muttered, "How the hell do people eat these things?"

Meanwhile, the live stream chat had shifted topics—from calculating the psychological trauma area of the poor squirrel to debating whether five-spice or butter-flavored pine nuts were superior. As for their perpetually lazy streamer, he was mercilessly mocked by viewers. Falling to the level of scavenging food scraps from his pet wasn’t just embarrassing—it was practically legendary among outdoor streamers.

Still, despite the ridicule, the stream’s popularity continued to soar, especially among pet enthusiasts. Surprisingly, most of the audience turned out to be fans of Wang Ping.

After polishing off another handful of pine nuts, Wang Ping used a claw to pick at a stubborn piece of kernel stuck between his teeth. Smacking his lips contentedly, he turned his gaze back to the squirrel’s hollow.

The squirrel guarding the entrance trembled visibly, then unleashed a barrage of frantic squeaks.

"One last handful! I swear, this is absolutely the last one!"

Ignoring whether the squirrel understood or not, Wang Ping gestured with his paw, grinned mischievously, and leaned closer to the hollow. Brushing aside the squirrel’s protests and struggles, he squeezed past it and plunged his paw inside.

"Huh?"

To his surprise, the once-abundant pile of pine nuts had dwindled significantly. Despite his best efforts, he only managed to scrape together a measly handful, barely enough to hold onto.

"You’re such a lazy bum, only storing this much?" Wang Ping scoffed, giving the squirrel a disdainful glare before pulling out the final portion.

"Squeeeaaaak…"

The squirrel let out a mournful cry, akin to a cuckoo bird shedding blood. Once Wang Ping stepped aside, it rushed into the hollow, weeping bitterly as it surveyed the depleted stockpile.
