Chapter 80: Hell of Lions and Spectators

Someone had already taken my files?

Upon hearing the archivist's words, Leon couldn't help but furrow his brow.

"Can you tell me who took the files?" he asked.

"I'm sorry," the archivist replied politely but firmly, "according to bureau regulations, that information is strictly confidential."

Leon nodded, not pressing further. He tucked the signed slip into his pocket and left the archives without another word. His face was grim as he strode toward the Secret Investigation Bureau building.

My family of six—ordinary people, nothing more. My parents died in service six years ago. Anna won’t come of age until next year, and my younger siblings are only six or seven. Whoever pulled those files must be targeting me specifically.

Not only do they have an interest in me, but they also possess the authority to access such classified documents. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out who it might be.

---

Leon Lion, Oliver Lion, Wayne Lion, Thomas Lion…

Staring at the mountain of "Lion"-related case files piled on her desk, the young policewoman sighed deeply, rubbing her tired eyes. She felt cursed by this damn surname. Every time she turned around, there was another mess involving someone from the Lion family.

First, she’d been assigned to investigate the assassination attempt on the Princess. The gun used? Manufactured by none other than the Lions’ arsenal. Several captured rebels insisted the Lions were behind the plot, but when the investigation hit resistance due to the family’s uncooperative attitude, it was abruptly shelved.

Just as she thought she'd made some progress tracking down one of the conspirators, another member of the Lions stepped in and ruined everything—not just making her look like a fool but leaving her emotionally drained for days.

And now, here she was again, actively taking on the investigation into Leon’s parents’ compensation even though she’d been treated with disdain by him. To make matters worse, she’d spent half the night poring over old records to reclaim the overdue pensions owed to that guy’s family while simultaneously trying to pin charges on a corrupt welfare officer from the military department. After hours of work, she’d barely managed to catch a few winks before dawn.

But no sooner had she submitted the pension claim than two new cases landed on her desk—both involving yet another branch of the accursed Lion family.

One involved a commercial dispute between three noble families, led by the Lions, and Char Department Store. The second concerned a railway project jointly undertaken by the Lions and the Department of Public Works. Allegedly, construction had halted mid-project after a section of the foundation collapsed—and then mysteriously stopped entirely for half a year. Now, someone wanted her to verify the situation.

Verify what exactly? Are we all blind? Can’t they see whether the road is broken themselves? Do we really need to send investigators for something so obvious?

Squeak… Squeak…

Her teeth ground together as she stared at the glaring red “URGENT” stamps plastered across the folders. If there was one thing she hated most about working for the Secret Investigation Bureau, it was how everyone dumped their petty problems on them under the guise of “national security.”

We’re supposed to handle traitors, corrupt officials, spies infiltrating the kingdom, and saboteurs—not babysit trivial disputes over contracts or delayed infrastructure projects! Why does every little issue end up on our desks? If I’d known being a secret investigator meant dealing with nonsense like this, I would’ve chosen a different career path long ago.

“Isha.”

Just as she was contemplating setting fire to the entire pile of Lion-related chaos, a fellow investigator approached. His face bore the same exhaustion hers likely did. Without much energy, he tossed a small metal badge toward her.

“Interrogation Room 17 just opened up. Grab it if you want it.”

“I’ll take it!”

Snatching the token mid-air, she sprang to her feet with newfound purpose. With a relieved smile, she bolted out of the office and practically sprinted downstairs, eager to escape the suffocating weight of paperwork.

However, just as she reached the lobby and prepared to head down to the underground interrogation rooms, a voice called out to stop her.

“Isha~”

Turning back, bewildered, she saw a middle-aged female colleague she usually got along well with. The woman chuckled softly and tilted her chin toward the reception area.

“Look over there. Someone’s waiting for you.”

For me? Who could it be?

Following the direction of the nod, Isha froze upon seeing the familiar face. Her expression fell instantly, and without hesitation, she spun around and began walking away.

Please don’t call me. Please don’t call me! I don’t know him!

Is this… a lovers’ quarrel?

The older policewoman watched silently as Isha stormed off, then glanced at the man standing near the reception desk. Though tempted to mediate, protocol forbade interference. With a resigned sigh, she turned to address the visitor.

“I’m sorry,” she said apologetically. “I should let you in, but our rules are strict. Outsiders aren’t allowed unless—”

“What are you doing here?”

Before she could finish, a sharp voice cut through the air. Startled, she turned to find Isha had returned, now glaring daggers at the man.

“Aren’t you the one who told me to get lost and never bother you again? Did you forget your own words?”

“How is that relevant?” Leon retorted calmly, though his tone dripped with sarcasm.

After exchanging pleasantries with the helpful colleague and letting her retreat discreetly, Leon rubbed his still-sore posterior from the previous day’s mishap. Lowering his voice, he shot back, “You screamed while spanking me in the shooting range. Care to explain why you think I’m the crazy one?”

Huh?

From a distance, the middle-aged policewoman—who had been eavesdropping shamelessly—nearly stumbled backward in shock. Wait, wait, wait… The shooting range? Is this what passes for romance these days? Am I really that out of touch?

“You—shut up!” Isha hissed, glancing nervously around to ensure no one else was listening. Grabbing Leon by the arm, she dragged him outside, her voice low but venomous.

“You idiot rebel! We agreed to forget about the shooting range incident and never meet again. What do you want now?”

“What do I want?” Leon countered, narrowing his eyes. “Funny—I was going to ask you the same question.” Extending his hand, he demanded, “Hand over my files. All of them.”

Files? So that’s why you’re here.

Relief washed over Isha momentarily, but it quickly gave way to defiance. Slapping his open palm sharply, she snapped, “These are my files right now. You can have them once I’m done reviewing them.”

“They’re my files,” Leon argued.

“No, they’re not. They’re the bureau’s records about you.”

Having finally gained some leverage after spending half the night fighting for Leon family’s pension, Isha stood her ground, crossing her arms stubbornly. “Go home and wait. Once I’m finished, your files will go back to where they belong. And stop staring at me like that!”

“…”

I’m not staring at you. I’m wondering why everyone in your department has such insatiable curiosity.

Glancing around at the growing crowd pretending not to eavesdrop, Leon rolled his eyes and activated his badge system, checking the newest achievement he’d earned.
