Chapter 79: Power and Missed Opportunity

Only 1.1?

Glancing at his Contamination Value after acquiring the new anomaly, Leon couldn’t help but shake his head in disappointment. He had briefly entertained the fantasy of his Contamination Value skyrocketing by 48 points, granting him instant world-shaking power.

When he had obtained the Witch’s Broom, his Contamination Value jumped from 0.4 to 0.9—likely because both the goat’s head and the broom had low contamination levels individually, keeping their combined total below his tolerance threshold.

But this time, despite the Sacred Spirit Pendant’s potential to add up to 48 points, his limited contamination by anomalies—having only been exposed to them for less than a month—meant that 1.1 was probably his current limit.

“Chief, I’m ready.”

After politely alerting the red-haired chief, Leon activated the Sacred Spirit Pendant. He converted a small portion of his stamina into currency and “fed” it to the golden toad hanging from his neck.

“Gurgle…”

A deep, resonant croak echoed in Leon’s ears alone. A tiny bronze coin materialized within the toad’s gaping mouth. As the toad tilted its head back and swallowed the coin, an invisible slash attack shimmered faintly with white light, striking the hovering strand of red hair—only for nothing more to happen.

That’s it?

Despite mentally preparing himself, Leon felt a pang of discouragement as he watched the strand of hair continue floating serenely above the desk, not even bent or singed.

Though his physical endurance had improved slightly with rising Contamination Value, it still remained within ordinary human limits. Running seven or eight kilometers would likely be his absolute maximum.

The unassuming slash he’d just unleashed had consumed one-eighth of his stamina. Considering he needed to conserve energy, he could only afford four or five such attacks. And yet… even after paying such a steep cost, the attack hadn’t so much as nicked the chief’s hair.

Maybe he should stick to sniping.

“It’s fine. The power is actually quite impressive,” the red-haired chief said, noticing the disappointment in Leon’s eyes. She retracted her hair and offered a comforting smile.

“The force of that strike could probably pierce a thin steel plate. Plus, your attack was highly concealed, requiring no obvious preparation, and the precision was impeccable. By the way, how far can you release that attack?”

“I’m not entirely sure…”

“Then let’s try another method.”

Pointing toward the window, the chief instructed, “Extend your will outward. From the farthest point you can reach, pluck a leaf and bring it back.”

“I’ll give it a shot.”

Following her instructions, Leon paid another portion of his stamina to the toad around his neck. Moments later, a slightly yellowed leaf drifted in through the window on an invisible breeze, landing softly on the desk.

“Maximum range is about a hundred meters? That means your effective lethal range is probably just over fifty.”

Examining the leaf, the red-haired chief nodded approvingly. “The destructive power is somewhat lacking—slightly above police-grade firearms but below high-caliber nail guns. However, the accuracy is exceptional; you can sever a petiole at a hundred meters. Within fifty meters, you can inflict damage without any preparation. Very strong indeed.”

Giving Leon a thumbs-up, she continued cheerfully, “In moderately complex terrain, with this anomaly, you’re capable of suppressing and wiping out an entire squad of well-armed, seasoned soldiers single-handedly. And if we factor in the goat’s soul vision, it would take five elite ten-man teams to corner you in an urban environment—and they’d need to prepare for over half their forces being wiped out.”

“And that’s assuming they know your abilities beforehand. In a standard ambush scenario, as long as you avoid getting pinned down and surrounded, you could potentially hold off an entire company by yourself.”

“…”

Hearing this assessment, Leon conceded that the pendant wasn’t half bad. Combined with the mobility provided by his parkour badge, he could practically dominate cityscapes. But…

“Couldn’t I achieve similar results with the Demon Horns?”

After pondering the chief’s example, Leon frowned. “The black goat can directly incite aggression, which might lead to similar outcomes. If used skillfully, the chaos among enemy ranks could cause their assault to collapse entirely.”

“You’re right—it can do that, but only in one-versus-many scenarios.”

The chief studied Leon’s expression before continuing. “Most missions at your level involve small-scale operations targeting single objectives. In those cases, the goat isn’t nearly as useful as this pendant. For now, you can rest assured. By my standards, once the Witch’s Broom recovers, you’ll qualify as a competent Level 3 Incident Responder.”

Retrieving her strand of hair with a flick of her finger, the chief gazed earnestly at Leon, whose enthusiasm still seemed muted. “Leon, though you haven’t said it, I can tell that encountering the Gold Scale’s Sacred Spirit has left you feeling uneasy. But remember, some things can’t be rushed. For someone who’s only been handling anomalies for less than a month, reaching this level of strength is extraordinary. Take it slow—you’ll get there.”

“Thank you for the advice. I’ll keep it in mind…”

Nodding noncommittally, Leon tucked the Sacred Spirit Pendant back under his shirt and left the office with the chief’s passbook, heading toward the archives.

Take it slow, huh?

Reflecting on the chief’s words, Leon shook his head.

Taking it slow would be ideal, but for someone like him—a member of the Cleansing Bureau—there was no telling whether disaster or tomorrow would arrive first. Unlike Emma, who had immortality as a safety net, Leon’s survival depended on rapidly growing stronger. He couldn’t risk leaving Anna and the others without a dependable big brother after they’d already lost their parents.

Besides, while increasing his Contamination Value couldn’t be rushed and required gradual conversion over time, he still had the badge system to rely on.

Shooting, parkour, drinking, acting… Individually, these badges weren’t particularly powerful, and none of the lower-tier silver ones qualified as “anomalies.” But their clear upgrade paths meant that fulfilling specific tasks would yield significant boosts. Not to mention badges like Friend of Demons and Devotee directly enhanced his anomalies. With a little more effort, his growth rate could accelerate dramatically. So…

As long as I don’t die grinding, I’ll grind myself to death.

Resolved to become the ultimate power farmer, Leon grabbed the case containing his sniper rifle and stuffed two hard loaves of bread into his pocket. First, he’d check his family’s records at the archives to uncover what was troubling Anna. After a quick lunch, he planned to spend the entire day at the shooting range, firing until he couldn’t see the target anymore. However…

“I’m very sorry, but the file you requested has already been checked out.”

After consulting the archive log, the archivist gave Leon an apologetic nod. “Although your clearance level is higher, these ordinary archives only store a single copy of each file. You’ll have to wait until it’s returned before you can access it.”
