Chapter 90: The Cleanest Death
As he hovered on the brink of unconsciousness, suddenly, the ε symbol on his forehead emitted a brilliant blue light. The pulsating waves that had been tormenting him seemed to find an outlet, gushing out like a torrential river.
The pain gradually subsided, but his body remained beyond his control. The radiance from the glowing ε symbol grew stronger and stronger, resembling the first rays of dawn spreading across the horizon, enveloping him entirely.
...
"Liana, eat all of this..."
With the sound of a somewhat authoritative voice, a scene slowly emerged in his mind, blurry like footage from a low-quality underwater camera—hazy and indistinct.
Silver moonlight poured through the window, illuminating a crystal table. Beside it were three figures—two large and one small. The tallest figure was speaking loudly.
Across from them sat a small girl, about four feet tall, dressed in a white gown, her head bowed, looking sad and wronged. Tears streamed down her face, sliding along her faintly blue-tinged skin under the silver glow.
They bore a striking resemblance to humans—slender arms, long legs, smooth faces with delicate features. However, they were taller than humans, with sapphire-blue skin and hair like soft, filmy silk fluttering gently behind their heads.
"Liana isn't hungry; Liana doesn't want to eat this..."
"Liana, be a good girl. Eat this, and Mana will take you to Misel to see your favorite Tarola."
"Really?" The mischievous little one stopped crying and burst into laughter, greedily stuffing purple-red fruits into her mouth until her cheeks bulged like she was holding two pebbles.
"Giggles..." Her antics elicited a series of silvery laughs.
...
Tang Fang felt bewildered. What was this? Was it recorded imagery data from those pulsating waves, or someone's memories? In Epsilon language, Mana meant "thank you for giving me life," similar to the human word "mother."
Misel? Tarola? Could this be what the Epsilon people looked like?
His heart jolted as clarity returned to his mind. This meant the veil of mystery surrounding the Epsilon people was being lifted, and he was the first human to witness their splendor.
Fragments akin to memories—or perhaps documentary footage—played continuously in his mind. From the plains of Misel, to the Solona mountains, to the Esberen Temple, Tang Fang followed the little one's footsteps, virtually traversing the entire Cerephus.
His situation was peculiar: while he couldn't control his body, his consciousness was startlingly clear. He could see, hear, and think, but not speak or move. Simply put, his brain was functioning normally, while his cerebellum was on strike.
The scenes in his mind kept flashing. Outside, he could sense Arroz and Housen’s shouts and scuffling. Unfortunately, he couldn't respond. Of course, none of these mattered compared to the fact that the Epsilon shuttle was now out of control. The warp field was slowly deteriorating, and within another minute or two, they would exit hyperspace.
After leaving Planet Namie, the warp level had been accelerated to 9.9. After nearly a day and night of flight, they had long exited the Tranquil Star System and entered imperial territory.
Since the star map was annotated in Epsilon language, with different planetary naming conventions from humans, Tang Fang had no idea where the shuttle would exit hyperspace. If it was empty space, that would be fine, but if they emerged inside a planet or near a star, their lives would be in grave danger.
...
At the empire's frontier, Asram Star continued its steady rhythm, unconditionally casting its light and warmth in all directions. The twelve planets around it bathed in golden light, faithfully following its path like loyal subjects.
Due to the ceasefire agreement between Sulru Empire and Monya Empire, the once-militarized Hatto Spaceport was now tranquil. The massive warships over 400 meters long had vanished from the docks, replaced by various cargo ships and passenger vessels. Of course, some destroyers and cruisers for coastal defense were still present, docked on the other side of the port, separated from the civilian area.
Hatto Spaceport backed onto the third planet of the Asram Star System, Krotan, a mineral-rich planet with a population nearing a billion, governed by Duke Cain Rudolf. Due to years of mining, the once resource-abundant Krotan had reached its twilight, losing its former glory.
However, even a fallen giant remains formidable. Once rated as a third-class resource planet, Krotan still produced precious minerals like iridium and cobalt.
Several million kilometers away in the void outside Krotan, a flash of sapphire appeared without warning. A crescent-shaped spacecraft, nearly 20 meters long, emerged.
Without Tang Fang's guidance, the Epsilon shuttle finally exited hyperspace, appearing in the real world. Fortunately, it hadn’t crashed into a planet or emerged too close to a star.
But this relief lasted only two or three minutes before Housen's frantic shouting shattered the calm: "Arroz, look! We're heading straight for that damn sun!"
Arroz also noticed their dire predicament—it was like jumping out of the frying pan into the fire. The Epsilon shuttle was hurtling towards Asram at great speed.
With Tang Fang unconscious and neither Housen nor Arroz knowing how to pilot, they couldn't change course. At this rate, within half an hour, the shuttle would plunge into the burning sphere, hosting a grand and fiery funeral for the trio.
"Damn it, Tang Fang, wake up... If this keeps up, we'll all be roasted alive!" Housen shook the comatose Tang Fang violently.
Arroz glanced at the readings from the human scanner—they were normal, every index fine. So why wasn’t he waking up? What was going on?
No, he couldn’t just sit idly. They had to do something. Escaping from Planet Namie had been hard enough; he didn’t want to die here.
But when his gaze swept over the console flashing with various lights, then up at the psionic flame, his heart sank. Only Tang Fang could operate Epsilon technology. Anyone else touching the psionic flame faced certain death.
"What to do? What to do?" The shuttle had already passed the fifth planet of the Asram system and was speeding toward the fourth. Without altering course, death was imminent.
"Arroz, tell me what to do! Speak up! What should we do in this situation?" Shaking Tang Fang had yielded no results, so Housen turned his attention back to him.
Arroz exhaled a puff of smoke, a bitter smile on his face. "This is an Epsilon shuttle. Neither of us knows how to pilot it."
"So we just sit here and watch? We’ll all be incinerated, not a shred of ash left."
Though Tang Fang heard their conversation and was anxious, his body wouldn’t budge. That damned “Liana’s Growth Diary” bound his motor nerves like a tight-fitting straitjacket, preventing even a finger twitch.
He hadn’t died at the hands of Wei Haitao, nor in battle, nor under the barrage of Tiger Shark Squadron. Having escaped all that, he now faced being reduced to ashes by the sun.
He was unwilling to accept it: "Get out of my head! I don’t want to see your melancholy, self-pitying growing pains."
But no matter how much he cursed or struggled, those scenes of daily life remained unfazed, progressing steadily along the timeline.
"Hey, hey, Tang Fang, wake up! If you stay unconscious, we’re all dead."
Housen was completely panicked. He glanced at the psionic flame, gritted his teeth, and slowly extended his hands.
"Housen, are you insane?" Arroz grabbed him. "Losing fingers is one thing, but what if the shuttle explodes?"
"Better that than sitting here waiting to die!" Housen shot back, his face pale. "Nothing works! You come up with something!"
Arroz studied the navigation route on the star map and sighed helplessly. "The shuttle is on autopilot. We can’t change course with our abilities. Acting rashly will only make things worse."
"You’re not rash, but you’re equally helpless," Housen retorted.
"This..." Arroz was speechless.
Staring at the approaching Asram Star, Housen's expression darkened like a lone wolf howling in despair. "I refuse to believe it. We survived the ordeal on Planet Namie. Are we really going to be done in by this mere Epsilon shuttle? Even if it’s a dragon today, it’ll have to coil up nicely for me."
With those defiant words, he stormed out of the cockpit, disappearing in the blink of an eye.
"Housen, what are you doing?" Arroz's heart raced. He glanced at Tang Fang, slumped unconscious in the pilot's seat, and stamped his foot in frustration. Rising, he quickly followed after Housen.
The shuttle was 19 meters long, 13 meters wide, and 5 meters high. After accounting for the space occupied by propulsion, transmission, and environmental systems, plus the cockpit, the entire ship comprised only four cabins.
Finding Housen wasn’t difficult. When Arroz pushed open the door to the engine room, there stood Housen, frowning silently before the zero-core drive engine, which was minuscule compared to human shuttles.
"Housen, don’t be impulsive. If you destroy it, even if we avoid being incinerated, we’ll drift as space junk, doomed to die anyway."
As his words faded, a cold smile tugged at Housen’s lips.
