Chapter 102: Planet Krotan

"Hmm, the Heavy Armored Warriors are tank-like robots equipped with ultra-thick armor. Ordinary rifles, grenades, even high-caliber machine guns or standard anti-tank missiles can’t penetrate their shells. Their exteriors are made of a composite armor that blends inert Element Zero crystals with ceramics. These machines are astronomically expensive—so much so that combined, the four military districts of Krotan have fewer than 200 in stock."

"When word reached the Northern Sunaru Alliance command center that the military had authorized the deployment of these Heavy Armored Warriors, Colonel Montgomery and his advisors devised a plan to intercept them. The goal was to capture twenty of the units for the revolutionary cause. According to intelligence from headquarters, the convoy transporting the warriors had downsized its fleet and chosen a quieter route through rural backroads to avoid radar detection—specifically, Blue Lake Road, which runs past this small town."

"Since both Walton and I hail from Blue Lake, Colonel Montgomery assigned me to lead a team back into the town covertly. We were to lie low, wait for the right moment, and ambush the convoy to seize those Heavy Armored Warriors."

"You already know what happened next. Something changed along the way. Instead of the Heavy Armored Warriors, the cargo turned out to be highly mobile quadrupedal mechs and swarms of drones. Our mission failed completely. If it weren’t for your intervention, none of us would’ve made it out alive. We’d all be carrion on some forsaken stretch of wilderness by now.”

After listening intently to Grant’s detailed account, Tang Fang paused thoughtfully before responding. “So…you’re saying that just moments ago, we could still contact the Northern Sunaru Alliance command post, but now they’ve gone dark. Are you worried they’ve been attacked by the Heavy Armored Warriors?”

“Exactly. If the convoy passing through the town didn’t carry the Heavy Armored Warriors, there’s a good chance the military rerouted them elsewhere—perhaps directly to the front lines, or worse, they’ve already launched an assault on the armory.”

“And you suspect the communications blackout might be due to an EMP caused by nuclear detonation?”

Grant nodded grimly. “Without knowing the full picture, I want Walton to scout ahead first. Once he confirms whether there’s any danger, we’ll decide our next move.” He sighed and pointed at little Sam, who stood nearby, arms crossed stubbornly. “But this kid overheard everything and got it into his head to tag along. He’s worried about his brother’s safety. When I told him no, he threw a tantrum and threatened to go off on his own.”

“So that’s how it is,” Tang Fang muttered, furrowing his brow. To escape Planet Krotan with the help of the resistance forces, meeting Montgomery was unavoidable. A simple comms malfunction wouldn’t complicate matters too much—but if the situation was as dire as Grant feared, with the Heavy Armored Warriors attacking the armory, lending a hand might not only be wise but also necessary. Besides, ever since unlocking Stalkers and Sentinels, Tang Fang hadn’t yet tested their mettle against such formidable foes.

How would the Stalkers’ particle fragmentation cannons fare against the Heavy Armored Warriors? Only one way to find out.

“I’ll come with you,” Tang Fang said decisively. “Maybe I can lend a hand.”

“You…with us?” Grant stared at him, his expression tightening. “Are you sure? If something serious has happened at the armory, this won’t be a skirmish like last time—it’ll be all-out war. Once you’re caught in the crossfire…”

He trailed off, leaving the rest unsaid, but Tang Fang understood perfectly well. “Don’t worry. I know what I’m doing.”

“Alright then.” Grant relented. “Walton, Monroe, Turosa—you three get the vehicles ready. Old John, find yourself a safe place to lay low.”

“Aye, boss,” came the chorus of replies as the men dispersed.

Moments later, the sound of horns blared outside. Grant downed the last of his drink in one gulp, then led Tang Fang and the others out.

There were three vehicles waiting: two old armored troop carriers and a dual-engine mountain truck designed to transport the hulking Marauder units.

Tang Fang, however, wasn’t about to reveal his biggest secrets to these newfound acquaintances. Politely declining Monroe’s offer, he instructed Arroz and Housen to drive the truck while he climbed into the armored carrier with Grant.

The situation on Planet Krotan was peculiar, its nuances requiring further probing.

---

As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the clouds above the western peaks in hues of rose gold, the heat lingering on the asphalt began to fade. Dust swirled lazily behind the tires as the convoy rolled forward.

Inside the armored carrier, Tang Fang sat silently, gazing at the holographic map of Planet Krotan projected onto the vehicle’s display. The markers shifted constantly, reflecting real-time updates.

Grant had already briefed him thoroughly on the state of affairs. As Tang Fang suspected, the situation across the planet was delicate. Over the years, Sulru Empire and Monya Empire had maintained an uneasy peace, causing the once-heavily fortified Krotan Defense Line to dwindle significantly. Now, only a skeleton crew of cruisers remained stationed at the spaceport. Meanwhile, Planet Krotan itself, stripped of its mineral wealth, had devolved into a semi-agricultural, semi-resource world teetering on the brink of irrelevance.

Marion’s influence on Planet Krotan had been growing steadily for three or four years, culminating six months ago in a global revolution. Despite the decline in resource extraction, several critical military factories still operated here, though production of Dogfish Shark and Catshark-class frigates had been relocated to other star systems under Marquis Cain’s orders. Nevertheless, facilities for developing and manufacturing land vehicles and smaller aircraft remained intact.

Planet Krotan was predominantly oceanic, with water covering nearly ninety percent of its surface. Even including islands, the total landmass amounted to just forty million square kilometers. There were three main continents: Freyr Continent in the south, Thor Continent in the north, and Odin Continent in the middle.

These names, derived from Norse mythology, often drew criticism for being sacrilegious. But since Planet Krotan fell under the jurisdiction of the Rudolf family, naming conventions were entirely their prerogative.

For the Rudolfs, the names held symbolic significance. The god Freyr possessed Skíðblaðnir, a magical ship, making the name fitting for the southern continent where the largest aerospace manufacturing facilities—including the Dogfish Shark production line—were located. Traditionally associated with heat and vitality, the south aligned perfectly with Freyr’s attributes.

Thor Continent, named after the thunder god’s legendary hammer Mjölnir, reflected the strategic importance of the region during earlier conflicts between Sulru and Monya Empires. Back when Krotan served as a frontline stronghold, a massive nuclear missile base capable of targeting hostile spacecraft was constructed in the desolate Arctic. This installation symbolized Thor’s mighty hammer, granting the northern continent its moniker.

Finally, the vast central landmass, rich in resources and fertile soil ideal for agriculture, earned the name Odin Continent in honor of the Allfather. With an area of twenty million square kilometers, it dwarfed Freyr Continent (4.7 million) and Thor Continent (4.4 million). The remaining eight hundred thousand square kilometers consisted of countless scattered islands dotting the oceans.
