Chapter 52: Farewell, Rosette!

Rosette ran deep into the northern woods before finally stopping in a grove where the trees towered significantly higher than those around them.

Wang Ping had no intention of going to a zoo himself, and he certainly wouldn’t allow Rosette to return to such a place. Gu Lang’s intentions were good, but his logic was baffling. Did he really think Wang Ping and Rosette lacked the skills to survive in the wild?

After some reflection, however, Wang Ping understood why Gu Lang might think this way. The man probably still assumed that they were circus animals, raised in captivity.

His heart was in the right place—he just wasn’t very bright.

With that thought, Wang Ping silently labeled Gu Lang as dim-witted and turned his attention to Rosette, who was now lying on the ground grooming herself. A wave of reluctance washed over him.

It was time to part ways.

Rosette hadn’t yet realized what was about to happen. After finishing her paw-cleaning ritual, she sidled up to Wang Ping and began grooming him as well. To be honest, being licked by her was far from pleasant. Her tongue, covered in thick, rough papillae, scraped against his skin, while her breath carried a strong, gamey scent that made the experience even more unbearable. It reminded Wang Ping of his childhood—of being pinned down by his mother and scrubbed raw in a small plastic basin, the coarse towel rubbing against his skin until it turned red and tender.

But this time, Wang Ping didn’t resist. He let Rosette pin him down and lick him from head to toe.

The terrain here was peculiar. Though nothing seemed unusual at ground level, the surrounding trees were markedly different from those in the areas they’d passed through earlier. Each tree stood nearly twice as tall as the ones before. Compared to these giants, the previous trees looked like saplings.

“This woodland is perfect,” Wang Ping thought to himself. “The trees are tall and dense; hiding among the canopy will keep you safe. Make this your home for now. If I ever get the chance to come back, I’ll visit you.”

He reached out with his paw and gave Rosette’s face a firm rub, silently bidding farewell.

Annoyed, Rosette shook her head and began licking her paws again, using them to smooth the fur on her face that Wang Ping had ruffled.

“Stop licking! Come on, let’s find a spot to make a nest.”

Wang Ping nudged Rosette and led her wandering through the forest until they found a massive Morus mesozygia tree with a thick trunk. Together, they climbed up.

Nearly ten meters above the ground, a sturdy branch provided a comfortable resting spot where Rosette could lie sideways. Wang Ping was satisfied with the location—it wasn’t too far from the security team’s base, so there might still be opportunities to meet again in the future.

Once settled, Rosette resumed licking her paws and cleaning her face. Before long, she started dozing off. Wang Ping stayed by her side, waiting for her to fall asleep before planning to leave quietly.

Communication between them was difficult, and Rosette had no concept of “goodbye.” If Wang Ping hid among the rescuers and hitched a ride out, only for Rosette to chase after him, things could get complicated.

Wang Ping wasn’t worried about Gu Lang leaving via helicopter. After all, the man’s rented car—with his belongings and identification inside—was still parked at the security outpost. Now that the danger had passed, it was unlikely he’d abandon it.

If Gu Lang truly proved to be that irresponsible, Wang Ping would consider himself unlucky.

Meanwhile, Zhang Jianming couldn’t help but marvel at how wasteful this young man was.

When Gu Lang finally reunited with the search party, he narrowly avoided being shot by soldiers mistaking him for a poacher. It wasn’t entirely their fault—the sight of him was alarming. His bandages, soaked by rain and caked with mud, hung off him like gray rags. His clothes were torn and filthy, marked by scrapes from the forest. Coupled with the falls he’d taken, he looked utterly disheveled. At first glance, he resembled a sniper in camouflage gear.

Thus, when he burst shouting from the trees, the already tense soldiers almost opened fire. Had he not been yelling his name repeatedly, Wang Ping might have needed incense to reconnect with him later.

After assigning soldiers to continue searching for the remaining two poachers, Zhang Jianming and Colonel initially planned to escort Gu Lang back to the helicopter immediately. With enemies still unaccounted for, leaving him alone in the forest was too risky.

However, Gu Lang hesitated. On one hand, he feared that if he left, the soldiers might provoke an attack from Wang Ping or Rosette. On the other hand, he couldn’t simply abandon the rented car. So, he led everyone back toward the outpost instead.

Gu Lang recounted the freckled man’s fate to Zhang Jianming without delay. Meeting a fellow countryman—and an embassy staff member—had put his mind at ease. Aside from Wang Ping and Rosette’s strange behavior, he kept talking nonstop, recounting his misfortunes to Zhang Jianming.

Yet after seeing Freckle-Face’s corpse, Zhang Jianming couldn’t help but question whose misfortune was greater.

Unable to locate the last poacher, Gu Lang’s hope of evacuating everyone from the forest fell through. In the end, only Zhang Jianming and Colonel accompanied him to the outpost.

“Hopefully Boss and Brother Leopard don’t do anything reckless,” Gu Lang muttered, watching the heavily armed soldiers disappear into the woods. All he could do was pray.

Zhang Jianming hailed from southern China. Though not tall, years of working in Tanzania had darkened his skin. With thick eyebrows and large eyes, he appeared spirited and approachable, leaving a favorable first impression.

For most of the journey, Gu Lang monopolized the conversation while Colonel trailed behind, occasionally glancing at him.

Upon reaching the clearing at the security outpost, Zhang Jianming took in the nearly wrecked SUV, the odd metal box holding the tablet, and Gu Lang’s documents. After a few brief questions, he inwardly sighed, instantly revising his earlier impression of Gu Lang. Forget the image of a righteous youth—this guy was clearly a spoiled brat seeking thrills abroad.

“Brother Zhang, should we drive straight out of here? My car’s almost out of fuel and won’t go much farther.”

Gu Lang smiled as he asked.

Regarding Wang Ping and Rosette, Gu Lang knew he couldn’t force the issue. Forcing them into captivity at a zoo wouldn’t lead to the outcome he desired. Still, thinking about escaping this godforsaken place, enjoying a hot shower and delicious food at a hotel, brought him genuine joy.

The accompanying Colonel circled the SUV, inspecting the license plate before opening the door and leaning into the driver’s seat for a closer look. However, the overpowering stench inside made him recoil almost immediately.

Just as Gu Lang watched curiously, Colonel pulled a pair of handcuffs from his pocket, jingling them meaningfully as he eyed Gu Lang.

“What’s going on?” Gu Lang blurted, bewildered.

Seeing the sudden appearance of handcuffs, even Zhang Jianming sensed the atmosphere shift.

“Colonel, what does this mean?” Zhang Jianming stepped forward, shielding Gu Lang, his brow furrowed.

“Zhang, you’re aware of this. This vehicle illegally breached Makuyuni, violating our national laws. Now that we’ve found it, are you going to shield your compatriot?” Colonel asked coldly.

“I believe there’s been a misunderstanding. Don’t jump to conclusions!” Zhang Jianming waved dismissively, then turned to the confused Gu Lang. “Explain. Why did you force your way through Makuyuni? And if you were already there, why didn’t you contact the embassy? Were you kidnapped?”

“What’s Makuyuni?” Gu Lang scratched the back of his head, utterly perplexed.

“Don’t play dumb!” Zhang Jianming frowned, lowering his voice. “They recorded your license plate. I know about this incident—it can’t be hidden. Tell me the truth. Don’t worry; I’ll help you.”

“I’m not lying…” Gu Lang never expected such an absurd twist just as salvation seemed within reach. One wrong move, and he might become a criminal—truly a situation that left him wanting to cry but unable to shed tears.

“I had a high fever and was delirious until last night. I honestly don’t know how this car ended up here…”

“This…”

Zhang Jianming hesitated. Though Gu Lang didn’t appear to be lying, the explanation sounded far-fetched. How could someone in the car remain oblivious to its movement—and the driver’s identity?

Exchanging glances with Colonel, both men wore expressions of unease.

In the forest, Wang Ping slid down from the Morus mesozygia tree. Looking up at the faint golden glow peeking through the branches, he raised his paw in a silent wave before turning southeast and walking away.

Farewell, Rosette!
