Chapter 44: Having a Gun Really Does Make You Tough

At this moment, less than a hundred meters behind Gu Lang, Tuka lowered his modified rifle, his face tinged with disappointment.

Although Tuka had eventually joined the operation under Scarface's threat, his initial hesitation had subtly shifted his standing within the group. As a result, when it came to choosing flanking routes, Scarface had assigned Tuka to a separate direction, ordering him to act alone while he himself led the two white men in a pincer movement from the north.

As for Adit, he was left behind to guard the vehicle. The young man was too impulsive—Scarface didn’t trust him, and neither did Tuka, who was closest to him.

After finding a high vantage point on his own from the south and spotting Gu Lang through his scope, Tuka made up his mind. Since he couldn’t avoid the situation, he might as well do his best. He worried that Scarface might grow suspicious of him after their earlier encounter. If that happened, future opportunities for cooperation could vanish. Compared to the risks of murder, Tuka valued this financial lifeline far more. The best way to dispel Scarface’s suspicions? Killing Gu Lang himself.

Tuka was confident in his marksmanship. Even at night, with poor visibility, he could hit an elephant square in the forehead with a single shot, delivering a fatal blow. Unlike those brutal white men, Tuka considered his shooting an art form. His rifle, heavily customized by his own hands, boasted unparalleled precision—but was also far harder to master.

Unfortunately, his most certain shot had somehow missed its mark. And now, having rushed to fire after discovering Gu Lang’s escape, hitting the target was nearly impossible.

Just then, Scarface emerged from the bushes, pistol in hand, followed by the two white men armed with assault rifles.

"Where is he?" Scarface asked in a low voice.

"He ran... that way!" Tuka pointed eastward, sighing deeply.

Scarface gave Tuka a thoughtful glance before waving his hand and taking off after Gu Lang. The cold-faced white men followed closely, but the freckled giant paused, patting Tuka on the shoulder with a mocking grin. "Hmph, not bad aim."

Tuka clenched his teeth, saying nothing. Once the trio was out of earshot, he muttered under his breath. "Fuck!"

The western edge of the forest was about two kilometers from the camp. On open ground, a fast runner could cover the distance in roughly ten minutes. But here, amidst dense trees, thorny bushes, and uneven terrain covered in slippery leaves, running was a different story altogether. After only a short while, Gu Lang was already gasping for breath.

Running for life wasn’t like jogging—no one would have time to regulate their breathing. Add to that the rain, which though lighter under the canopy, still made the ground slick. Gu Lang had already fallen several times, his hands and knees caked with grass and mud. Earlier, after shouting into the live stream, "They’re poachers! Call the police!" he’d stuffed the tablet back into his side pocket. Whether it had survived the falls was anyone’s guess.

Behind him, Scarface and his crew were closing in. Gunshots rang out intermittently, bullets slicing through the foliage, sending leaves flying.

Wang Ping, growing increasingly frustrated, decided it was time for counterattack—not with some imaginary battalion commander, but with Rosette. Together, they would set up an ambush.

Of course, Gu Lang couldn’t be counted as part of the combat force. His sole role now was as bait, luring the enemy deeper into the forest. Whether or not the bait would be devoured depended entirely on whether Wang Ping’s ambush succeeded.

Commanding Rosette to climb a tree, Wang Ping kicked Gu Lang back down when he tried to follow, waving his tiny arms to urge him onward.

The entire trail of destruction along the way had been left by Gu Lang. Did he think the poachers were idiots? Had he forgotten how he’d been shot out of a tree earlier?

Gu Lang’s brain was oxygen-deprived from all the running. Seeing his “leader” so heartlessly abandon him, he could only grit his teeth and keep moving.

"Run! Once I get back to camp, everything will be fine. I can drive away..." Gu Lang muttered to himself, stumbling blindly forward without realizing his path had veered off course.

Meanwhile, Wang Ping lay low on a branch, gripping Rosette’s neck, eyes fixed intently on the ground below.

As footsteps approached, a patch of shrubbery rustled, and three figures emerged. Tuka seemed determined to play sniper, maintaining a safe distance to provide long-range support—or perhaps he simply didn’t trust his teammates.

The two white men held their guns at the ready while Scarface crouched to examine the tracks Gu Lang had left behind.

Shit!

Wang Ping cursed inwardly. In his haste to climb the tree, Gu Lang had left obvious signs—and Wang Ping, distracted, had forgotten to cover them up.

"Hmm..."

Scarface smirked, raising his gun toward the tree. At the same moment, realizing the danger, Wang Ping leapt from the branch, aiming straight for Scarface.

"Roar ahh!"

The sudden animalistic cry startled the three men below. Seeing a creature leap out of nowhere, they froze for a split second—just long enough for Rosette to pounce from above.

"Roar!"

Man and beast collided.

Scarface reacted swiftly. Just as Wang Ping’s claws were about to rake across his face, he ducked, simultaneously swinging his gun to deflect the attack.

Bang!

A gunshot rang out, the bullet ricocheting wildly into the distance. Scarface felt as though he’d exchanged punches with an adult; the recoil slammed his weapon against his chest, forcing him to stumble backward and fall.

Meanwhile, Rosette pinned the freckled man to the ground, jaws snapping shut inches from his face.

Bang!

Another shot rang out from the woods behind them. Though hastily fired, Tuka’s aim was far superior to Scarface’s. The bullet struck near Rosette’s feet, kicking up a cloud of leaves. Startled, she leapt into the nearby bushes.

As for Wang Ping, his mid-air collision with Scarface sent him flying into a nearby thicket.

"Fuck!"

The shaken freckled man roared in anger, scrambling to his feet and opening fire with his assault rifle.

Ratatatat...

The deafening roar of automatic gunfire tore through the forest, bullets shredding leaves and branches.

Scarface and the other white man, nearly wetting himself in fear, also opened fire, spraying bullets in the direction Rosette had fled.

After all, Wang Ping’s small size made him hard to identify—even Scarface couldn’t tell what exactly had attacked them. But everyone had clearly seen the leopard pouncing down.

Good Lord Almighty, spare your son! Scarface’s heart raced with lingering terror, his face drenched in rain—or perhaps sweat.

Why the hell was there a leopard here? Was this some kind of cosmic mix-up?

Out of the corner of his eye, Scarface glanced back. Without Tuka’s timely intervention, he might have met his end right there. It seemed keeping that old hunter around might prove useful in critical moments.

By now, Rosette and Wang Ping had already fled far ahead.

Guns really do make them tough—especially that sniper in the back. Unbeatable, absolutely unbeatable!

At the same time the gunfire erupted, Gu Lang, who had just taken another tumble, suddenly stopped in his tracks. Hearing the cacophony of weapons behind him, his expression darkened.

"Oh no! They are  going to get themselves killed!"
