Chapter 50: Calamity

It was a circular creature, its body stretching over three hundred meters in length. Its grotesque, tumor-like form was marred by a single, blood-red eye that spanned the width of its bloated frame. Beneath its body, there were no nose or mouth—only a ring of twelve bizarre orifices around its base, each dripping with viscous fluids. These openings resembled both anus-like apertures and suction cups, adding to their unsettling and alien appearance. Yet, compared to the jellyfish-like tendrils surrounding it, these features seemed almost secondary.

Earlier, Tang Fang had seen those organic intestines piercing through the ceiling on the upper level. To his horror, they originated from the crown of this one-eyed monstrosity. Around its massive body coiled countless crimson tentacles as thick as a child's arm, each adorned with bud-like structures and fleshy petal-shaped maws. The sight alone sent shivers down anyone’s spine.

The energy shield grew fainter and fainter until it finally vanished altogether. The creature’s scarlet eye shifted downward, coldly scanning the three figures standing before the control console.

“I… I told you so…” Housen stammered, his legs trembling uncontrollably, his voice quivering.

Arroz said nothing. Instead, he raised his weapon, aiming its barrel directly at the hulking mass of flesh.

Tang Fang was stunned. He never imagined such an enormous beast would be hidden within the confines of the energy barrier. “Could this be the Epsilonians’ scientific achievement? A colossal monster?” But then he shook his head. “No, no. Look at this equipment—it’s clearly designed for purifying and activating some kind of energy source, not cultivating biological organisms.”

Reality gave him little time to ponder further. The one-eyed behemoth had already locked onto the trio. In an instant, hundreds of its flexible tendrils shot forward like arrows, hurtling toward the central control hub.

Arroz opened fire. Seven-millimeter metal spikes tore through the air with supersonic speed, creating ear-splitting sonic booms as they struck the creature’s flesh. Beside him, Housen, driven by sheer terror, launched grenade after grenade. Each explosion erupted into small mushroom clouds across the creature’s bloated surface, sending chunks of flesh and red slime flying everywhere.

The metal spikes possessed incredible penetration power, their high-velocity impact driving them deep into the creature’s organic tissue. Meanwhile, the high-explosive Judicator grenades splattered the creature with fragments of gore and viscera coated in crimson ooze.

But what happened next left Arroz and Housen utterly incredulous. As the three scrambled to evade the agile lashes of the tendrils, the creature’s flesh rippled violently. One by one, the embedded metal spikes were ejected like fish bones from its body. Even the gaping craters left by the grenades began to heal almost instantly, new layers of flesh knitting themselves together until the wounds disappeared entirely. Within moments, the creature was fully restored, unscathed once more.

“For God’s sake, how can this damned thing have such terrifying regenerative abilities?!” Housen shouted, leaping off the platform and diving behind a row of machinery. He sprinted frantically, desperate to avoid the relentless assault of the whip-like appendages.

Arroz wasn’t faring much better. With pinpoint accuracy, he continued firing, slowing the advance of the tendrils while retreating step by step.

Of the three, Tang Fang bore the brunt of the attack. More than half of the hundreds of lashing tendrils targeted him specifically, as if the creature instinctively recognized him as the leader—the one who must be subdued first.

To counter the onslaught, Tang Fang unleashed all fourteen zealots under his command. They surrounded him, forming a protective barrier against the steel-hard lashes. Energy swords flashed through the air, leaving trails of ghostly blue flames. One tendril was severed cleanly, its severed end writhing and twitching on the ground.

Yet again, the creature demonstrated its horrifying resilience. Flesh buds swelled around the wound, and within mere breaths, the tendril regenerated completely, resuming its assault without pause.

Every member of the Protoss race was a formidable warrior, born brave and strong. The fourteen zealots encircled Tang Fang, wielding their exceptional combat skills to sever tendril after tendril. Within just three or four minutes, the floor was littered with severed limbs.

Thick pools of blood congealed into viscous puddles, sliding down the edges of the platform like creeping shadows of death, casting an icy chill over the entire chamber.

Arroz and Housen were now in dire straits. An increasing number of tendrils redirected their focus, relentlessly pursuing the two men. It seemed the creature had realized it couldn’t decapitate the leader directly; instead, it sought to cripple his allies.

But Tang Fang would not let that happen. Ripples shimmered in the air as a squadron of marines and marauders materialized, joining the fray. Their combined firepower unleashed a devastating barrage upon the creature. Stimpacks had been administered, enhancing their mobility and allowing them to dodge the deadly tendrils more effectively. The increased rate of fire formed a dense web of bullets and explosives, easing the pressure on Arroz and Housen while inflicting significant damage on the creature.

Imagine the spectacle: twenty-four marines and twenty-four marauders simultaneously opening fire on a single target. The scene was nothing short of awe-inspiring and earth-shattering.

“Boom! Boom! Boom!”

Tracer rounds streaked through the air, mingling with the sharp whistling of supersonic metal spikes slicing through the atmosphere. The resulting tableau was a chaotic dance of fire and blood.

The creature writhed violently, its grotesque bulk leaking streams of viscous blood that cascaded down its uneven surface, splattering onto the ground in crimson rivulets.

Enraged by Tang Fang’s counterattack, the creature unleashed the full fury of its arsenal. Over a thousand tendrils whipped through the air, their flower-like maws slowly opening to spew jets of near-black, highly corrosive acid.

Bullet tracers lit up the room, intertwining with arcs of jet-black acid and waves of crimson tendrils. Pools of blood spread across the floor, merging into lakes of gore. The entire chamber resembled a nightmarish battlefield straight out of hell.

Behind a row of electronic equipment, Arroz and Housen gasped for breath, their faces pale with exhaustion. Tang Fang’s reinforcements had alleviated some of the pressure, giving them a momentary reprieve.

“Hiss…”

“Boom! Boom…”

Torrents of acid rained down on rows of machinery, corroding large patches of metal into rust. As the relentless assault continued, the rust expanded and softened, eventually dissolving to expose the internal wiring beneath.

When the acid reached critical components, the once-bulletproof precision instruments erupted in dazzling flashes of light, accompanied by thunderous explosions. Flames engulfed the area, consuming everything in their path.

Thick smoke billowed upward, purple and blue electric tongues flickered wildly, and warning lights blinked erratically on control panels. Explosions echoed deafeningly, and fiery plumes illuminated the chaos. The entire room teetered on the brink of collapse, a vision of apocalyptic destruction.

Arroz and Housen stared at the carnage before them, their faces drained of color. It felt as though they had been transported back to the frontlines of war, where artillery roared and death loomed at every turn.
