Chapter 7: Plan
"So, where exactly are we?" Subtly taking control of the conversation, Su Fei began to indirectly inquire about the information he wanted. He noticed a change in himself; previously, he could only converse so confidently within games, easily controlling the flow of conversation.
Perhaps it was because he treated this place as the world of 'Amber Sword'.
The experiences gained within the game had imbued him with a natural confidence when interacting with these young people, almost as if they were still children. This confidence, though unconscious, subtly influenced others, be it Freya or anyone else, who began to notice a shift in demeanor. Gradually, the conversation's focal point shifted towards Su Fei, whether by design or happenstance.
A few young people nearby also looked over.
"This is the Red Pine Forest, don't move." The ponytailed girl took a deep breath, trying to calm herself down to answer.
Su Fei raised his eyebrows in surprise. As expected of the future Valkyrie; she quickly learned to control her emotions. However, in his eyes, she still seemed a bit immature.
"The Red Pine Forest?"
"Wait, how did you end up here?" Su Fei was surprised again. He remembered this place, called 'Dwarf Valley' in the game, as the habitat of level fourteen brown bears. But this place was south of Buchi, and there was no reason for Buchi's militia to appear in this direction.
"We came to find you."
"To find Miss Roma, she is Big Sis's friend."
"And Roma is a member of the third squad." Everyone chimed in.
"You repelled Madara's vanguard?" Su Fei looked at Freya; this was the question he cared about most.
"How is that possible!" The girl looked at him incredulously, as if saying, how could he ask such a foolish question?
"The adults of the militia covered the villagers' retreat from the north, and we got separated from everyone. Moreover, there were more and more monsters on the main road, so we could only head south. Besides, I was worried about Roma..."
"So you came here?" Su Fei felt his heart sinking.
The girl nodded naturally, her long ponytail swaying.
Freya immediately felt something strange. The young man in front of her wasn't Chief Marden, yet she couldn't shake off the feeling of inferiority in his presence.
Su Fei couldn't help but cover his forehead. Were these young people naive or ignorant? They were thinking of saving others even when they couldn't ensure their own safety.
No, perhaps it was kindness.
But unnecessary kindness was not needed on the battlefield; it would only harm oneself.
Su Fei fell silent, but deep down, he couldn't help but feel frustrated. He had burned his grandfather's house to warn the village, but unexpectedly, history still followed its original path—or rather, repeated itself.
And there were still these naive fellows. Oh Lady Marsha, what kind of joke are you playing?
He sighed inwardly, realizing how little he could change. The inertia of history couldn't be stopped by a mere ounce of strength. Indeed, he needed to become stronger, but before that, he still had to survive.
Sigh, Chief Marden, it seems I can't save you either.
How could Black Rose Madara from Brovento attack the border before the Eternal Death Celebration in May? Such an obvious premeditation surely indicated a sinister motive, didn't it?
Su Fei's hopes were completely dashed, leaving him with a hollow feeling. Despite his previous efforts and struggles, he ultimately realized that history remained unchanged, which was truly disheartening.
However, after all, it was only the power of an ordinary person, and he had done his best.
"Brandon!"
Just when he was feeling disgruntled, a surprising voice rang in his ears, as joyful as a lark. Su Fei turned around and happened to see the merchant girl with an incredulous look of surprise appearing on one side of the forest, accompanied by a girl in gray-white leather armor beside her - presumably the girl who had gone to spread the news.
Roma rushed over to him like a gust of wind, cautiously staring at him as if afraid he would disappear.
"I knew it. I knew you would be fine, Brandon." She seemed relieved, speaking happily.
"Oh, Brandon. Freya won't let me go back to Buchi, I..." Then the merchant girl explained eagerly, as if afraid he would be angry.
Only then did Su Fei notice two sparkling tear streaks on the other person's face, which softened his heart.
"It's okay, I'm fine now," he replied softly.
"Really?"
"Really." Su Fei nodded.
"Roma, don't touch him. He's badly injured," Freya couldn't help furrowing her brow. Did they even realize the severity of his injuries? He was nearly on the brink of death, alright?
"It's okay," Roma said, though her embarrassed expression betrayed her words as she stuck out her tongue and took a step back, eliciting a chuckle from Su Fei.
That was just the way the merchant girl was.
Su Fei couldn't help but feel delighted as he watched the two beautiful girls standing side by side. Then, he suddenly realized that change wasn't absent; it just came from a different perspective. Ever since he arrived in this world, it had already changed.
If it weren't for his transmigration, perhaps the merchant girl and Brandon would have met with misfortune already. The bandits of Madara were not known for their compassion or mercy after all.
He looked at the others again, and these young people with Freya. How many of them would ultimately survive in that war?
Su Fei remembered clearly that in that war, only one in ten of the border militia and guards survived.
Now that he was here, perhaps history could veer from its predetermined course. Though he lacked further insight, he resolved to ensure the safety of those around him.
These young individuals represented the kingdom's future, Su Fei absolutely would not allow history to repeat itself.
"Alright, let's get back to the point. Do you know how serious the situation is now?" Su Fei sighed, trying to make himself less uncomfortable. Honestly, what he needed most now was rest, but the current situation obviously didn't allow for it.
He looked at the others, but both Freya and these young militiamen were puzzled.
Only Roma blinked playfully.
"Huh?" The girl with the ponytail hummed in confusion.
Su Fei coughed weakly and asked, "I mean, what are you planning to do next? If I'm not mistaken, the undead of Madara must have seized control of the main road, right?"
It suddenly became quiet around them.
"How... how do you know?" Freya was slightly surprised, looking at him in astonishment.
Of course, I know. Not only do I know, but I also experienced it firsthand, Su Fei answered in his mind. However, the surprised looks around him still brought him a sense of satisfaction
Being a prophet had its benefits after all.
But this small satisfaction couldn't hide his worries: Madara acted swiftly and meticulously in the April offensive during the game. He had to come up with a more thorough plan to save himself.
And of course these young people as well.
At this moment, Buchi faced the flank of Madara's great army, led by none other than Enstallone, the well-known 'Black Lord' in the future. Though currently merely a young man in his early twenties, it was from this very war onwards that this future military star began to show his burgeoning talent.
And what about him? In the annals of history at this moment, he was nothing more than a nobody.
But Su Fei understood that the only advantage he had now was foresight. Indeed, such an advantage could save him in the encounters to come—but he had to seize the opportunity.
He only had two chances.
One was to pass through the relatively safe Thornstone Valley. He remembered clearly that it wouldn't be until the seventeenth that Enstallone's right hand, 'One-eyed' Targus, would control this area.
But it was too far away. He was worried he wouldn't make it out before the encirclement was completed. Unless there were horses. However, where was he going to find horses for ten people now?
So, there was only one road left—to break out from the Dagger River Bank before the two companies led by 'Corpse Demon’ Wesah and 'White Knight' Eberton surrounded them.
Until the end of April, there was only a squad of skeletons led by a skeletal wizard stationed there.
He couldn't help but touch the cold ring on his index finger. With the Ring of the Wind Sovereign, breaking through the line of eleven skeleton soldiers and one skeletal wizard wasn't that difficullt, was it?
But before that, he had to make sure that every person in this militia squad followed his orders. That was why he had acted so domineering from the beginning.
Su Fei glanced at everyone again. "It's a reasonable guess. Anyone with a bit of military knowledge would come to such a conclusion. Blocking the main road is to cut off communication and clear the area around Buchi of Eruin's remnants," he exaggerated based on his experience.
"That's us." He emphasized after a brief pause,
The silence continued, and all that could be heard were the soft intakes of breath from the others.
"So, what do you plan to do now?" Su Fei asked weakly.
Everyone looked at each other.
There were more than ten skeleton soldiers guarding the main road to Buchi. They couldn't just charge out, could they? Despite possessing the typical confidence of youth, believing these adversaries were insignificant, the prospect of a life-or-death confrontation still stirred a hint of apprehension within.
Freya looked worried; she hadn't considered so much when making her decision. Although they were militia, they were still just a group of inexperienced young people.
She remained silent, but her confusion and hesitation were written all over her face.
The others' gazes had already settled on Su Fei. His demeanor exuded a calmness born of experience, making him appear more reliable in moments of crisis than anyone else.
"Brandon?" Roma also asked.
Su Fei turned back, giving her a reassuring smile.
"We need to prepare for the worst," he said, turning to the others to dispel any naive thoughts they still held.
This wasn't the first time he had done this. In the guild, newcomers who went to battle for the first time always held optimistic attitudes, but once they suffered setbacks, they would fall into a state of confusion and helplessness, thus quickly crumbling in front of experienced teams.
In fact, the difference between players wasn't as big as imagined; the key was mindset.
And they, as veteran players, had to give these newcomers a heads-up in advance.
"Prepare for the worst?"
Just when Su Fei was about to speak, a sparse voice came from the jungle. Everyone instinctively looked in that direction, except for Freya, who frowned and questioned the bushes nearby, "Jason?"
"It's me, Chief Freya."
Everyone breathed a sigh of relief.
However, Su Fei secretly gestured to Freya, indicating the need for heightened vigilance. Though initially surprised by his signal, Freya quickly grasped the situation. In the rigorous Eruin militia training, there was a strict policy against unauthorized absence from duty.
And Su Fei had absolute confidence in the military discipline of the Eruin militia. Although these young people were naive, it didn't mean they could forget the basic rules they followed daily.
There was no room for negligence on the battlefield—
"What's wrong, Jason?" Freya asked, her hand resting on the hilt of her sword.
"I, I'm sorry Big Sis. I've been caught..."
The euonymus bush 'rustled' apart, and two people walked out from behind. The first one was a young man with a pale face and hands raised high, his face wearing a mournful expression.
Following closely behind was a skeletal wizard, pointing its finger at the back of the young man's head, while its eye sockets flickered with green flames, surveying the others present.
"Haha, I caught a bunch of little mice."
Everyone was terrified.
"Jason!"
"How could you—"
Then a chorus of incredulous voices erupted.
