Chapter 6: Freya

Su Fei felt as though she had had a long dream, where everything appeared surreal in a serene and dark environment. Amidst the oddities of his dream, there remained a consistent presence: a black moon hung in the sky, casting an eerie glow over a tranquil, dark lake, with a solitary tower standing tall at its center throughout the entirety of the dream.

Did the moon symbolize something? What about the tower? Or was it just a nightmare?

Su Fei didn't know. Just like he didn't know when he would wake up. This state persisted until he heard a conversation in a daze.

"Freya." A boy’s voice appeared near him.

"Braeden, have you made contact?" This time, it was a girl's voice, crisp and clear.

"No, a group of monsters are guarding the road. We couldn't find where Uncle Marden and the others went, and this guy…" The voice moved closer to him. Su Fei's heart skipped a beat, feeling as though he could sense a gaze falling on him. It was like a link to this world, making his body gradually heavy. The next moment, he realized that it was gravity.

Su Fei could finally confirm now that he could feel his body, although he couldn’t move.

His breathing became somewhat erratic. Was he dead?

"He's injured, take care of him," the girl's voice replied.

Injured?

Was she talking about him?

Yes, he was injured. His thoughts gradually became clearer, and everything that had happened before played out like early scenes from a movie in his mind. It all started from the moment he was reborn through the body of a young man named Brandon.

Su Fei never imagined that one day he would risk his life to do something like that, which didn't seem like a decision a shut-in would make.

But he succeeded in the end, with Lady Marsha’s blessing.

"Freya, he's awake," the boy suddenly said.

"What?"

"I saw his eyelids move."

"Impossible, he's severely injured. Markumi said... huh?"

Severely injured?

Indeed, Brandon was already severely injured, and later he sustained three more sword strikes when he activated his ability: Indomitable. He remembered clearly, each strike in his abdomen and right chest was a genuine piercing injury.

Su Fei's mind became active, and with a thought, the voices around him became clearer. The panicked shouts, crackling flames, metallic collisions, and footsteps converged, drowning out the previous conversation. The surrounding temperature also gradually rose. At first, he felt a warm heat licking his face, but after a while, it started to become scorching.

Hot.

With an effort, his eyelids flickered open. The first thing that met his gaze was the surprised expression on a girl's face.

The girl should be called Freya. Su Fei's first impression of her completely matched his imagination of the owner of that crisp, clear voice: light brown hair, bright eyes, long hair tied into a ponytail, exuding a heroic aura. She was lowering her head, scrutinizing him, while Su Fei was scrutinizing her. She was wearing a snug gray-white leather armor with a thick cotton shirt underneath, with a shoulder badge—painted with crudely-made pigments showing a beautiful black pine leaf.

Buchi's militia.

He also noticed the longsword in the girl's hand, a medieval Western European longsword with a flame emblem on the sword guard.

Mark of the Temple of Flames.

His gaze shifted, noticing the blood-stained bandages on her other shoulder and left chest.

Had she been through a battle?

Su Fei's eyes caught every detail without fail.

...

When he woke up, everything suddenly quieted down.

"Where is this...?"

"Where's Roma... cough!" Su Fei felt like his throat was burned by a hot iron, dry and painful. A slight pain gradually spread throughout his body, and he couldn't help but cough lightly.

But the forest was as quiet as death, responding only with the sound of the wind coming from the Usson Mountains. However, the wind passing through the thick leaves of the Goran black pine had become faint and soft, rustling like a stream flowing in the ears.

No one answered.

"He's awake."

"I can't believe it, he's still alive with those injuries."

"It must be a miracle..."

But the whispered conversation reached his ears. Su Fei was puzzled. What was going on? These people should be Buchi's militia, right? Had they saved him?

What about the merchant girl?

Had the plan succeeded? Did Chief Marden understand his intentions?

He couldn't help but turn his head. The first thing that caught his eye was a bright bonfire, the flames flickering in his field of vision, sparks rising along the black pine and disappearing into the night sky.

"You're awake?" The girl finally reacted, hurriedly stopping him. "Wait, don't move, this is Buchi, do you remember what happened?"

"Buchi... Buchi." Su Fei repeated the place name.

"Can you tell me what happened?" he asked with a sigh. Logically, he was already dead, whether in the game or in real life.

The only possibility was unless Miss Roma had actually found the health potion

"Little Phineas and Markumi found you two in the nearby forest," Freya said curiously, scrutinizing him. Although this young man named Brandon had been in their village for almost a year, he hadn't interacted much with the other young people in the village.

He always stayed alone in his gloomy house, only occasionally accompanying Roma to the nearby town.

It was obvious to everyone in the nearby area that this young man had an interest in the girl who dreamed of being a merchant, except for the girl herself.

Freya couldn't help but glance at him again at this point, carrying a hint of suspicion.

"You two?" Su Fei asked.

"You and Roma, I really wonder how you managed to escape," the girl couldn't help but sigh.

"Where’s she?"

"She's fine, don't worry, she's a thousand times better than you. You should worry more about your own condition," Freya said, covering her forehead and asking softly, "But she keeps insisting on going to the village, do you know what's going on?"

Su Fei was taken aback.

In other words, he hadn't used a health potion yet; then what about his injuries? As if by instinct, he subconsciously opened his attribute interface. Green data flowed in his retinas, and he was dumbfounded to see a line of small words in the character status:

Health (critical, weak): 10% (bandaged, recovers 1 point of health per day)

Impossible! Su Fei's first reaction was that he must be dreaming. No one knew his condition better than himself. Fatal injuries all over, with heavy bleeding; no matter which way he looked at it, he should’ve been dead by now.

How could there still be 10% of health left?

Su Fei shook his head, trying to clear his mind, but he saw the girl next to him looking nervous. "Don't move, you're severely injured..."

"Don't worry," he instinctively waved his hand.

Su Fei knew his own situation well. Although there were some doubts, his current condition didn't involve blood loss, nor were there any other abnormalities. Although he was still weak and in critical condition, he understood that it couldn't be rushed. He could only rely on gradual recovery.

After all, the injury was stable, and there was no immediate danger to his life.

And this was also the most confusing part for him. How did his injuries stabilize automatically? The talent Indomitable couldn't have this ability!

"You!" Freya couldn't help but widen her eyes, she had never seen someone so reckless.

At first, everyone thought this guy was doomed, but they never expected him to wake up. Just that fact alone should be thanks to Lady Marsha's favor, right?

The problem was this guy still acted as if he didn't care at all, he should cherish his own life!

"Lie back down!" The girl couldn't help but take a deep breath, gritting her teeth as she ordered.

Su Fei was taken aback, couldn't help but glance at her. What was wrong with this woman?

"You, you have also received militia training, haven’t you? I'm Freya, the chief commander of the third squad of Buchi's militia, and now I'm commanding you to temporarily obey my orders," Freya blushed for a moment, realizing her outburst, "Do you understand?"

"You're Freya?" Su Fei was surprised, blurting out, "Freya Ellisia, born in the year of the Frost Flowers, daughter of the Great Knight Everton?"

"Huh, what?" The girl was taken aback by the barrage of questions. "No, my father is just a carpenter in town..."

Laughter suddenly erupted around them.

"Freya, this guy's pickup game is pretty strong."

"You should be careful, big sis."

"Shut it, Markumi, Ekko!" Freya turned back angrily, glaring at the young people not far away.

Su Fei, on the other hand, took the opportunity to look at these people. There were seven or eight members in this militia squad, conforming to Eruin's organization, but the chief commander was actually a woman, and there was even a young troublemaker among them.

Glancing at the individuals beside him, he couldn't help but feel a sense of helplessness. Although it appeared to be an isolated incident, it actually served as a stark reflection of Eruin’s considerable weakening after years of war.

The seemingly shiny period of prosperity would squeeze out the last bit of energy from this kingdom.

Su Fei couldn't help but sigh.

He had witnessed this history from start to finish, never expecting to relive it in this life. But perhaps he could change something. He looked at the girl beside him—yes, Freya Ellisia. The last general of Eruin, later known as the Valkyrie of the Kingdom. She was the daughter of ‘Scepter of Fire' Everton, lost in the countryside in her early years, and later became one of the top stars in the kingdom with the princess regent's appreciation.

Su Fei didn't expect her to have experienced this war too.

Unfortunately, it wasn't the time for her to take control yet. Su Fei understood that he had to take responsibility for his own safety and, of course, for the lives of these young people.

"What are you looking at?" Freya turned back, falling into a moment of daze as she met the young man's gaze.

The look in his eyes wasn't admiration, nor was it infatuation, it was like he regarded her as a strange animal. Yes, as if he were looking at an exotic animal.

"You’ve never seen a dead person before, have you?" Su Fei suddenly asked.

"Huh?"

"I mean, are you afraid of seeing someone die?"

"No, I just..." The girl hesitated for a moment, at a loss for words.

"Then my injuries have nothing to do with you. Can I sit up now?" Su Fei asked seriously.

"No, you can't."

"Why?"

Freya was speechless; she was indeed afraid. She was afraid of seeing someone die in front of her, no matter who it was. Compared to the future Valkyrie, surrounded by countless accolades, Freya was currently nothing more than a simple country girl.

Having not experienced the cruelty of war, she still innocently admired the kindness side of the world.

Su Fei smiled slightly. He hadn't seen a dead person either, but with his experiences in the Amber Sword, he might be twice as experienced as the current Freya.

He had at least experienced the pain of loss.

The longing for people and things of the past tormented his memory, making him mature and cherish things.

But it also sowed hatred.

"So, you're just a little girl after all. What ability do you have to make me obey your orders, Miss Freya?" Su Fei said.

"You—"

Su Fei knew that arguing about this topic wouldn't do him any good. He glanced at the bandages on his chest and immediately changed the subject, "Was it you who bandaged me up?"

"It was Big Sis who did it. Only she knows first aid around here." The boy next to the girl replied eagerly, looking at the young man curiously.

Sure enough, the Braggs' militia was much more capable than they were. Seeing that the injured man appeared to be quite experienced, the boy couldn’t help but think to himself.

"Just barely to stop bleeding, you shouldn't try to move around, I don't want to help you dress your wounds again," Freya reminded immediately.

Apart from stopping bleeding, bandages could only produce healing effects once. Su Fei was naturally aware of this.

But this time, he politely said, "Thank you, even though the skill was lacking—"

"..."

Oh Lady Marsha, Freya took a deep breath, trying to calm herself down. At this moment, she had an urge to strangle this smiling guy.
