Chapter 17: Dark Demon Begins His Noble Path
"It seems [Pride I] hasn’t granted it too much power." Dark carefully observed DemiDevimon’s behavior.
Its original will remained intact, but its personality had changed under the influence of [Pride I].
It seemed eager to break the bird chain, considering it an "insult."
But it didn’t have the strength to free itself from the chain.
"Speaking of strength..." Dark immediately thought of DemiDevimon’s ultimate skill, [Demi Dart].
As a familiar spirit, it didn’t originally have the ability to use an ultimate skill.
But with its current transformation, perhaps it could!
Dark scribbled a few words in his notebook, then looked up and said, "DemiDevimon, use [Demi Dart] on the wall."
DemiDevimon, however, folded its wings, raised its head proudly, and declared, "unshackle me!"
"Heh." Dark was amused by its request.
Although a familiar spirit couldn’t truly defy its master’s will, Dark, wanting to observe DemiDevimon’s skill more closely, still unshackled the chain from its ankle.
Freed, DemiDevimon fluttered around the room before sharply flapping its wings and shouting, "Demi Dart!"
In an instant, three syringe-like darts with shark heads appeared under its wings and shot toward the wall!
“Thud, thud, thud!”
The three darts pierced the wall, forming a perfect triangle.
However, before long, the darts faded into light particles and disappeared, leaving only three holes in the wall.
Dark quickly noted in his notebook: "Skill successfully released. This proves the test subject is no longer a mere familiar spirit."
...
At 3:43.
The dark golden color in DemiDevimon’s eyes slowly faded, returning to its usual pale yellow.
Then, suddenly, it blinked, stretched its wings, tilted its head back, and collapsed onto the table with a “thud,” legs stiff like a dead sparrow.
"The duration of the Pride state is about 13 minutes, roughly three to five times stronger than a typical emotion card." Dark jotted this down, then looked up at DemiDevimon and sighed, "Stop pretending to be dead."
DemiDevimon remained motionless.
Dark reached out and scratched its chin.
DemiDevimon immediately burst into laughter, curling up into a ball.
Then, suddenly, it jerked up, stiffly raising its head, its small eyes filled with pleading as it looked at Dark.
"When you called me a servant earlier, you didn’t have that look on your face." Dark said, pretending to be stern.
But DemiDevimon’s eyes twinkled, quickly realizing its master wasn’t angry. It immediately flattered, "Maaasteeer~"
Dark shuddered in disgust.
But he quickly wrote in his notebook: "The change in life form has not reversed."
...
Although Dark could not figure out why such change still remained, DemiDevimon had indeed changed from a familiar spirit to a life form that was very close to a Digimon after being affected by [Pride].
Dark preliminarily believed that this transformation was irreversible.
It was like a magister awakening their talent, gaining magical power, and from then on becoming extraordinary.
And after DemiDevimon’s "awakening," it became even more talkative!
The previously mute DemiDevimon, though occasionally mischievous, was endearing because of its loyal nature.
But what if it could talk?
What if it constantly made sarcastic remarks and got on people’s nerves?
That was definitely something to be cautious about.
Dark didn’t want to lose out on Saint Marian’s exclusive delivery service.
Maybe a muzzle would be a good idea?
Under its master’s odd gaze, DemiDevimon quickly stood up, folding its wings behind its back obediently like a schoolboy who was being reprimanded.
Dark shook his head and decided to continue his research. "Oh, and don’t speak in front of others!"
...
By using the magic brain dropper, Dark had managed to reduce his [Pride] indicator from 112 to 111.
But that was still far from enough.
However, using the magic brain dropper was highly dangerous and had to be done cautiously.
Dark didn’t begin a second extraction right away.
The "Magic Brain Dropper User’s Guide" clearly stated: "If one doesn't want to suddenly turn into an idiot, Thought Substances should not be extracted more than once a month."
It grouped memories, emotions, knowledge, and thoughts into a category called "Thought Substances" and advised moderation.
But having read the entire book, Dark knew that skilled magisters often extracted Thought Substances two or three times within a month.
Because experimentation always came with failures, and breakthroughs required taking risks.
As the number of extractions within a month increased, the danger level would also rise, and after the third time, the danger would reach nearly 60%, more than half.
Thus, the saying "never more than three times."
Of course, the magisters in the book dared to extract two or three times within a month because of their skill.
Even so, continuing this extraction process for several months could easily result in "intermittent amnesia."
Dark was self-aware and knew that, at his current level, even one regular extraction of Thought Substances was incredibly risky. This was why he chose the "Dragonfly Touching Water Method."
The "Dragonfly Touching Water Method" could only extract Thought Substances that overflowed from one's brain, making it far less dangerous.
Even so, it shouldn’t be used recklessly.
According to the "Magic Brain Dropper User's Guide," it was best to use it every 24 hours, and after more than ten consecutive uses, one should wait at least a month before using it again.
This allowed one's brain time to fully recover!
The brain is the most complex system in the human body, and one can never be too cautious.
There was no need to rush, either.
Based on Dark’s understanding of the "Dragonfly Touching Water Method," it could only extract the portion of the deadly sin indicator that exceeded 100.
Thus, for now, only [Pride] could be extracted.
Next, he planned to visit the library to study materials on emotion-related magic cards, aiming to further improve [Pride I] or develop [Pride II].
...
By 4:30 p.m., Dark was already in the library.
It seemed that Senior Pandora was on vacation today, as she wasn’t there.
That was great news!
Dark completed his registration under the friendly gaze of Ms. Bella and entered the library in a relaxed mood.
The creation of [Pride I] had been part of his plan all along, but it was only one of many paths.
He understood that if he only suppressed the deadly sins without turning them into usable power, he would be endlessly running from his fate, eventually driven into a corner!
Fools only know how to escape.
While the wise will find a way to harness it.
Today, confirming the path of converting the overflowing deadly sins into magic cards was a breakthrough!
As for how far the deadly sin series of magic cards could be developed and what core power they could ultimately reveal?
That was still unknown.
...
The flickering lights softly illuminated the library’s desks.
Dark Demon’s silhouette grew ever more noble.
