Chapter 8: Dark Demon - A Master of Balancing Work and Rest

"A demon-type?" Professor Silver had somehow appeared beside Dark, her presence marked by the faint fragrance characteristic of the elven race, causing an odd itch in his mind.

Dark inhaled slightly and asked in confusion, "Professor, wasn’t the era of the demons already over? How come I can still summon a demon-type?"

With a calm tone, Professor Silver explained, "A familiar spirit from a sorting card is just one type of magical spirit, and technically, it's a product of alchemy. This is similar to a golem; it's not a real living being. What we call a 'demon-type' is simply a classification of magical spirit, not an actual demon. As a magister, you must learn to distinguish reality from illusion and seek truth, without being misled by appearances. As for why you summoned a demon-type, that’s related to your magic energy, knowledge, and personality. Moreover, the technology of magical spirits is still far from perfect, with many aspects unexplained."

The freshmen around were all ignorantly nodding their heads. Although they didn’t know what the professor meant, they were still impressed by it.

Dark, however, earnestly asked, "Professor, what’s the name of my familiar spirit?"

Professor Silver sternly replied, "That will be your homework. Before the next summoning class, successfully summon your own familiar spirit, identify its type, name, and characteristics, and write a 300-word report for me. Okay, Demon gets five points!"

With that, Professor Silver moved on to another student.

Watching her retreating figure, Dark wondered if she had any clue what the demon-type magical spirit’s name actually was.

After all, the creature in question was clearly a DemiDevimon!

This game, Duel! Saint Marian Super XX Academy, truly lived up to its reputation as a bizarre patchwork—going as far as to borrow (copy) from Digimon!

Although Dark knew this game was a chaotic mix of elements, this level of copying seemed a bit too blatant.

Dark's head throbbed a little.

Could DemiDevimon evolve into Venom Vamdemon?

With Digimon's many convoluted evolution paths, he wasn’t entirely sure anymore.

However, familiar spirits summoned from sorting cards were generally low-level magical spirits. Their primary function was to help their master transmit messages or send and receive letters, taking the place of the traditional "owl" role.

According to the magisters, the intelligence level of familiar spirits was 2.5, slightly lower than that of common beasts and they were harmless.

Dark gently poked DemiDevimon’s head and found its reactions slow, likely because it had only just been born.

DemiDevimon’s round body, bat-like wings, and three-clawed hands, along with the white skull emblem on its forehead, gave it a weirdly cute yet ugly look after staring at it for a while.

The key feature was its wings, which made it a great fit for a familiar spirit!

Dark quickly accepted the fact that he had summoned a DemiDevimon. After all, wasn’t a demon god’s familiar spirit supposed to be a little demon?

Next, Dark began glancing around.

To put it nicely, he was observing the progress of his classmates, but in truth, he was just daydreaming!

Without realizing it, they had been in class for over an hour. Without a little distraction to break the progression, wouldn’t he get into trouble?

An idea slowly formed in Dark’s mind.

Then it hit him!

Studying too hard would trigger his [Greed] indicator, but if he balanced his studies with daydreaming, wouldn’t that perfectly resolve the issue?

Bingo!

Dark quickly suppressed his feelings of joy before they could evolve into [Pride].

Perhaps because of his example, the freshmen seemed to be working even harder on their summoning.

Finally, the Miss know-it-all was the second person to complete her familiar spirit summoning!

The moment Emma successfully summoned her familiar spirit, she didn’t even look to see what species it was. Instead, she instinctively turned to glance at the far corner of the classroom.

Her gaze clearly carried a sense of competition, as if to say, “Look, I did it too!”

However, Dark’s gaze merely brushed past hers without any interest, as if he didn’t care at all.

Emma turned back, feeling slightly disappointed.

But the small familiar spirit perched on her desk quickly brought back her smile.

It was a small otter with snow-white fur.

Whether it was its tiny bean-like eyes, its short limbs, or the way it shyly rubbed its face with a little “squee” sound, every detail hit the little girl’s soft spot for cuteness!

“As expected, it’s an otter,” Dark thought, not surprised.

Otters were alert, curious creatures, and it was also the Patronus of the know-it-all girl in the original story.

Naturally, it was the most likely choice.

“So, Robert’s familiar spirit should be a hound, and White’s should be a stag?”

Dark glanced in their direction and found Robert and White both scratching their heads in frustration. Clearly, they weren’t progressing well.

In fact, the freshmen from Noble House were generally summoning their familiar spirits faster than those from Knight House.

This was the advantage of prior education.

“Wow!”

An overly excited voice drew Dark’s attention.

He noticed that Dianna had also successfully summoned her familiar spirit before the class ended!

It was a round-headed, adorable panda!

The panda, no larger than a stuffed toy, lay sprawled on the desk, its eyes still dazed, looking utterly cute.

“That’s such a perfect match for her…”

Dark couldn’t help but cover his eyes.

The Great Bayer family, known as the Bear of the Kingdom, had somehow produced such a silly person?

Oh well.

A panda is still a bear!

Dianna, however, was clearly overjoyed with her familiar spirit, even lifting it above her head and twirling it around. It wasn’t until Professor Silver shot her a glare that she hurriedly stopped.

Meanwhile, Rose, who had yet to summon her familiar spirit, began to grow anxious.

The second class of the morning was Magic Theory.

If summoning was the method of using magic cards, then Magic Theory was the foundational theory behind crafting them.

And the corresponding dueling class was where students would practice!

Students were strictly forbidden from summoning their familiar spirits in the academy corridors, but some still ignored the rules, running around with their spirits.

Dark paid no attention to those people and arrived early in the Magic Theory classroom.

The break between classes was a full half-hour. The lazy wasted time, while the diligent began to study ahead.

To avoid being labeled [Sloth], Dark pulled out his Magic Theory textbook, Magic Guide: Basic Theory 1, and began leafing through it, though not too seriously.

Thus, when Emma Mortis hurriedly entered the classroom, she spotted someone sitting by the window in the back row, diligently studying.

It didn’t seem like something a Noble House student would do.

Usually, people like that belonged in Magister House!

Mumbling similar thoughts to herself, Emma found a seat in the front row, took out her textbook, and began her own preparation.

Dark glanced at Emma sitting in the front row but was thinking about whether there was a magic card that could help with his current dilemma.

It would be great if there were cards that could remove the bloodline of the demon god, but if there weren’t any cards like that, cards that could absorb some negative emotions, or calm his mind would not be bad either.
