Chapter 16 Chess is a Gamble (Part 2/3)
Emperor
Yanxi fell into momentary silence. His eyes scrutinised his son expressionlessly.
With no inch of emotion on his face, Emperor Yanxi's thoughts were difficult to
guess. Originally. Jun Chengyan looked back earnestly. But after a while, he
turned away. Deep down, he was afraid of looking into his Emperor Father's
eyes, After all, he knew he was guilty.
After a
long while, Emperor Yanxi suddenly picked up a letter and threw it on Jun
Chengyan. He crossly said, "You saved the girl back, but your family
members had no idea? Why didn't you go back to the room to rest, but instead
visit another woman's room in the dead of night? A man should never enter an
unmarried woman's room alone. Do you not know that? The daughter of the
official is also somewhat educated. If she didn't really meet a ghost, she
would not have lost her mind? Not only that, the official went to your house to
visit her daughter. Why did you reject him on multiple occasions? Don't try to
fool me with reasons like damaging your image. It is one thing for a married
woman to go home alone, and another for her parents to visit their seriously ill
daughter!"
"Emperor
Father, I'm wrongly accused!" Jun Chengyan crawled forward don his knees
for a few steps and said with tears in his eyes. "I really don't know what
happened to that woman. I visited her that night because an attendant reported
that she was acting weirdly. Emperor Father, my concubines get jealous easily.
I was worried that they would be dissatisfied if they knew that I brought the
woman back that day. I had planned to send her away as soon as she woke up. I
thought this small act of kindness would be quickly over so I did not inform
the concubines of it, in case they took it wrongly."
Jun
Chengyan wiped the corners of his eyes with his cuffs. He then continued,
"While the official's daughter is just a concubine, she tends to be
unreasonable and cruel towards her attendants. I never reprimanded her since
she treated me wholeheartedly and had been with me for a long time. Instead, I
just reminded her from time to time. Alas, she went mad after this incident. I
suspect that she had gone overboard with her heartless acts over the years and
her own guilt drove her crazy. Otherwise, why is everyone fine, except
her?"
"I
understand that her parents love her dearly. However, she has gone mad and
spout nonsense all day. She’s dishevelled and in poor bodily condition. Her
current state is completely unsuitable to meet visitors. Seeing her unkempt
appearance will only make the official and his wife more distressed. So, I
decided to let the official visit her only after her condition improved."
Jun Chengyan said confidently, "I fear that my concubine's mindless
nonsense may be too much for the official's doting fatherly heart. I worry that
he might believe her words and more trouble will happen. If that happens,
things will be troublesome. I hope the Emperor Father will see my innocence and
painstaking efforts to protect the official and my concubine."
Emperor
Yanxi looked at Jun Chengyan's sorrowful and regretful expression. He mulled
over his son's words and said, "This matter is caused by you. Whether your
concubine was driven by guilt or accidentally scared, you must take the
responsibility and protect her well in the mansion. Do your best to cure her.
As for the official, find a suitable opportunity to let him see his daughter.
He is more knowledgeable than you and naturally knows what to believe and what
not to believe. Also, go resolve the rumours about your mansion. Don't ever let
me hear of such embarrassing rumours ever again. Do you understand?"
"Yes,
Emperor Father. I will not let you down." Jun Chengyan said.
"Go."
Emperor Yanxi waved his hand as his head shook. He seemed too fatigued to talk
to his son any more. In any case, Jun Chengyan is his son. Emperor Yanxi could
lecture Jun Chengyan but will not punish him heavily over a concubine and a
mere rumour. This was also the difference between a wife and a concubine in the
eyes of the royals.
As for
Jun Chengyan's rhetoric, Emperor Yanxi naturally knew which were truth and lies.
But it did not matter. Jun Chengyan would take care of this himself. This son
was not the son of the main family branch, so Emperor Yanxi never expected much
from him. Everything was fine as long as he did not cause trouble.
"Yes,
I will take my leave." Jun Chengyan bowed his head humbly. After he turned
around, the corner of his mouth raised. His eyes filled with triumph the moment
his expression was out of Emperor Yanxi's sight.
With
the Emperor's aid, the official had believed that he would be able to see his
daughter in a few days. Alas, her never thought that their next meeting would
be on his daughter's deathbed. The attendant's from the Fourth Prince's Mansion
claimed that the concubine insisted on going out. As such, they had no choice
but to accompany her. Unexpectedly, she ran out of their sight. Before they
knew it, she had fallen into the lake and drowned.
Although
this statement was suspicious, the coroner's findings supported the claim.
There was no other trauma on the body and no traces of her being forced into
the water. All evidence deemed this drowning to be an accident.
