Chapter 07 The Loving Empress Mother (Part 2/3)
"How are you getting along with Ling Qiyang ?" As the
eldest of the three, Jun Liyuan naturally cared about his younger brother.
"Well, he is a plain person. With him, my heart seems to have
calmed down." Jun Lixuan said.
"Third Brother, you don’t need to worry at all. I heard that
someone rushed to make more than a hundred bright scarlet clothes for Ling
Qiyang. The well-known clothing shops in the Capital had to delay some of their
own business and rush the clothes for him." Jun Liche teased.
"Oh? That happened?" Jun Liyuan guffawed heartily.
"Sixth Brother is well-informed. Even my private matters are
transparent to you." Jun Lixuan did not care. He was never afraid of
others knowing what he did.
"What do you think I do? If I don't know anything about this,
how could I survive in the Capital?" Jun Liche straightened his cloak and
smiled confidently.
Jun Lixuan did not know how to respond. However, Jun Liche only
inquired about this out of care and concern.
As the three were talking, they met the First Prince, Jun
Chengrong, walking over in military uniform. Jarringly contrasting to the
handsomeness of the trio, Jun Chengrong was born with distinct ruggedness.
Under Concubine Ying's lavish upbringing, Jun Chengrong had a stocky build
since childhood. After he matured, his body may have become more muscular, but
his face remained round and meaty. Surprisingly, such a meaty figure could still retain a
domineering presence within the military battalion.
"The three of you here to visit Empress Mother?" Jun
Chengrong raised his chin, his eyes full of conceit.
Jun Lixuan didn't want to deal with him at all, so he was silent.
"Yeah, it's the Chinese New Year tomorrow. We came to see if
Empress Mother had anything to replenish." Jun Liche smiled politely. Jun
Liyuan was the son of the Empress, and his status was nobler than Jun
Chengrong. Hence, he could ignore the pompous prince. Moreover, Jun Chengrong's
snark remarks came up without a greeting, and the tone of his speech was more
like interrogative than pleasant. It was as if he was already in charge of this
palace.
"While I was away, I heard that Seventh Brother got
married?" Jun Chengrong looked at Jun Lixuan.
Jun Lixuan nodded slightly but did not speak.
"I think I must see this younger brother-in-law at tomorrow's
palace banquet, " Jun Chengrong smiled.
In reality, there was nothing wrong with this statement at all.
But, a mysterious ball of flames raged within Jun Lixuan. Ling Qiyang is my
Prince Consort. What is this scum thinking of looking at!
Seeing his night-black face, Jun Liche quickly changed the
subject, "First brother, where are you going?"
Jun Chengrong proudly shifted his helmet from his right hand to
his left hand and said with a smile, "This time I returned from battle
victoriously. Emperor Father happily asked me what reward I wanted. Now that
the New Year is coming, my Concubine Mother is still grounded. So I asked
Emperor Father to let her out so that our family can be reunited."
Concubine Ying was grounded by the Emperor for being disrespectful
to the Empress half a year ago. Since then, she was not allowed to participate
in all palace banquets. Now that the eldest prince exchanged his military
successes her freedom, he displayed a reeking smugness on his face. Little did
he know that there was an absolute disrespect in overturning the Emperor's
decisions hidden underneath his request.
"As expected of Brother, you are extremely filial." Jun
Liche smiled profoundly.
"Alright, I won't talk with you anymore. I can see you
tomorrow anyway. I'll go to Mother Concubine and tell her the good news
now." After Jun Chengrong finished his goodbyes, he sauntered away.
"I never thought he would be able to win the war in the
north." Jun Liche shook his head and followed the two of them.
Jun Lixuan frowned. This life was really different from his
previous. He remembered that in the year of the Western War, it was peaceful in
the north. However, when he thought of the Tamar tribe in the north, Jun Lixuan
felt a painful knuckle in his throat. Even the annihilation of the Tamar Tribe
would not be enough to soothe his thunderous rage.
"It's hard to say whether it is merit or demerit. But, don't
you think that Tamar's retreat was too sudden this time? While it's our New
Year, the Tamars had just begun their spring. They were really prepared for this war and most likely would not leave till they had exhausted all their supplies. Why would they
go back suddenly?" Jun Liyuan's thoughts were evidently more profound.
Jun Lixuan was not informed of the happenings and kept his
silence. He could only say, "Let’s see when the time comes. Hopefully, we
have a peaceful celebration.” This was the New Year Celebration he spent with
Ling Qiyang. He did not want a mediocre Prince's failure to ruin his time with
his wife.
"Yeah." Jun Liyuan nodded.
After the three left the palace together, they went about their
own ways.
Note: The status and honorifics for concubines are different from
the Empress to show the Empress’s royalty. (Mother Concubine (母妃) vs Empress Mother (皇娘))
To clarify, the status of His Royal Highness(王爷) is a rank higher than
Prince (皇子).
