Chapter 03 Making Up to You (Part 2)

For Jun Lixuan’s marriage ceremony the next month, the entire Palace was hustled tirelessly. As this was the marriage of a prince, noo one dared to hand in slipshod work or relax for a moment.

In the Ye Empire, women were only 20% of the entire population. Additionally, fertility rates were meagre.

The ancestors enlisted the help of the world’s most capable doctors, and the empire's scholars scoured through all ancient literature. Finally, they developed a medicine that could change the physiology of men, allowing men to get pregnant. A man who took this medicine is called an Omega. They could only be taken as a male-wife and not be another’s husband. An Omega’s pregnancy was rarer than a woman with many Omegas not conceiving for life. Still, it was better than nothing. With the appearance of Omegas in the Ye Empire, a man’s relationship with another gained social acceptance. Except for the Emperor who could only take women as concubines, everyone else, from the princes to ordinary people, could marry Omegas.

A man had to take medicine three times to complete the change to an Omega. After each dose, his body would suffer excruciating pain. After taking it once, the remaining two were mandatory. Otherwise, the body would be practically broken. Therefore, the Ye Empire always took care of Omegas, and most men were unwilling to become Omega.

During the marriage preparation period, Jun Lixuan, who returned home to recuperate, was not idle either. The image of Ling Qiyang’s wedding robes that flowed in the winds like rolling flames in his previous life was fresh in his mind. He felt that when Ling Qiyang married him this time, the robes must be more gorgeous than that one. Initially, the wedding robes should be designed by the marrying party. However, Jun Lixuan worried that Count Wangyang’s family would mistreat his bride. So he requested that the Empress allow the Palace to prepare the robes.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs had sent many samples of the wedding robes for Jun Lixuan choosing. But Jun Lixuan was not very satisfied. Eventually, he designed a new one personally.

The marriage was in the midst of a harsh winter. While flamboyant wedding robes were luxurious, it was not warm enough. With that in mind, Jun Lixuan decided to add cotton layers to the inner and middle robes and to use silk for his outer layer. This not only added luxury but also ensured Ling Qiyang’s warm.

On November 19th, the Third Prince, as the elder brother, took the matchmaking granny along to meet the marrying party. Everything proceeded without a hitch.

“It's rare for you to be so attentive." The Empress was very comforted as she touched the freshly designed wedding robes that were rushed out by the seamstresses. It seemed that her son was serious about his marriage with Ling Qiyang and did not view it as perfunctory.

Thinking of her son’s imminent marriage, the Empress, as a mother, inevitably had a few words of advice for her son. “Although Ling Qiyang is a concubine's son, his elder brother is also the same. Within the family, only two younger daughters were born from the First Consort. For him to be your First Consort is reasonable. You must remember to keep a firm disciple amongst the servants in your manor. Don’t let them look down on him. Besides, you should also pay attention to the issue of your heir. Although it is common not to have one, I still hope that you have someone to succeed you."

"I understand." He was not worried about succession, but to relieve his Empress Mother's heart, he agreed.

Their Four Pillars of Destiny were matched three years ago, so their marriage process was much simplified compared to traditional marriage customs. On the day of Bridal Gifting, the Sixth Prince visited the Count Wangyang Mansion with the wedding robes and wedding crowns. The Emperor and the Empress also had gifts prepared, which added to Ling Qiyang's dowry.

For two consecutive days before the marriage, the weather was chilling and overcast. Fortunately, on the day of the wedding, the skies cleared to a clear cerulean blue, and the sun was brightly shining.

His Royal Highness Ling marriage was a massive celebration in Ye Empire. After lunch, the citizens of the city gathered on both sides of the road early, awaiting to be part of the festival.

At 3pm, the bridal welcome team departed from His Royal Highness Ling's Manor. It went to Count Wangyang Mansion to receive the bride. The ones leading the group were the Third Prince and the Sixth Prince. Although Jun Lixuan was anxious to see Ling Qiyang, he could only wait in the manor according to Ye Empire's marriage customs.

After picking up the bride, the bridal carriage paraded around the Capital before turning to the His Royal Highness Ling Manor. The maids and attendants following behind the carriage each carried a basket in their hands and gifting wedding candies to the people who came to watch the procession.

"Your Highness, they've arrived!" Ming Li ran in with a wide grin hooking across his face. He courteously greeting the Emperor and Empress who had already taken their seats, and said, "Your Highness, you should come to the door to welcome the bride."

Jun Lixuan pursed the corner of his mouth, suppressing his bright smile, and followed Ming Li to the gate.

Clarifications:

To clarify, a man in Ancient China could take several wives. The highest-ranking and official spouse would be the First Consort. A man could choose to have a Second Consort by as well. All other wives would be concubines. Ling Qiyang’s omega-father is a concubine.

Children of the wives had varying ranking as well. The children of the First Consort would be favoured over the others. Within Ling Qiyang’s family, he and his brother were the only male children but were children of a concubine.
