Chapter 10 Ushering in the New Year (Part 3/3)
Jun Lixuan walked into the back chambers, where there was a specially dug hot spring where he
could bathe at any time. Apart from the Emperor’s chambers, only the Empress’s Serene
Palace had these hot spring pools. When he finished washing and warming his whole body, he put
on fresh robes and prepared a warm handkerchief. When he walked back to the
bed. Ling Qiyang was still asleep. He slept very soundly, often in the same
posture until dawn. Jun Lixuan did not want to disturb his sweet dreams, but he
had no choice. The circumstances were unique today.
As the warm towel wiped across his brows, eyes
and cheeks gently, Ling Qiyang's eyes twitched. He opened his drowsy eyes and
asked in a daze, "What's wrong?"
"Something cropped up. We have to pay our New
Year's greeting to the Emperor Father and Empress Mother slightly earlier. Then
we go directly back to the home." As he did not know the specific reason,
he could not explain it to Ling Qiyang.
"Yeah." Ling Qiyang sat up and let himself sober.
"Let’s catch up on sleep when we reach home."
"Okay."
After Ling Qiyang washed up, they went to the main
hall and waited. Soon, the Emperor and Empress had woken up, and the two went
in to pay their New Year greetings.
"Happy New Year, Emperor Father, Empress
Mother. May you be blessed with good health and endless prosperity." The
two knelt down and said in unison.
"You two came really early. Come, get up." Emperor
Yanxi smiled and took the red packet he had prepared from the attendant and
gave it to the two. Then, the Empress gave them her red packets.
"Thank you, Emperor Father, Empress Mother.
" The two thanked them, and Jun Lixuan said, "We happen to live in
the side hall, so naturally we have to be first to arrive."
"Hm. Getting up early in the new year is a good
sign. Yesterday, I slept well too, the best sleep I had in quite some
time." Emperor Yanxi said happily.
"Definitely. We celebrated heartily last night. It is expected to
be a little fatigued from the festive fun." Jun Lixuan said.
"Well, I’m sure both of you didn't sleep for much.
After breakfast, go home and rest."
"Thank you, Emperor Father. We will not have
breakfast in the Palace. I heard that the Capital’s Huaiying Pavilion serves
delicious breakfast, so I wanted to bring Qiyang to try it." Jun Lixuan had
prepared an excuse to leave the Palace early.
"If that's the case, quickly go. It's rare for
them to be open on the first day of the new year. If you reach early, you don't
have to queue." Emperor Yanxi had tasted the breakfast from Huaiying
Pavillion in the past. He also found it delicious. However, his status made it
inconvenient to leave the Palace. Hence, he could only reminiscence the
flavours in his mouth.
"Yes, we will take our leave now."
After leaving the Serene Palace, the couple left the
Palace compounds quickly. Not long after, they met Jun Liyuan who was going to
pay his New Year's greetings.
Seeing that the two were leaving, Jun Liyuan said,
"You act quickly."
"Happy New Year, Third Brother." The two men greeted him.
"Happy New Year." Jun Liyuan took a red packet
and handed it to Ling Qiyang, "I stopped giving Lixuan a long time ago.
But since this is the first New Year you celebrate with us, this red packet is necessary.

"Thank you, Third Brother." Ling Qiyang
smiled and accepted the red packet.
Jun Lixuan stepped forward and asked softly, "Third Brother, do
you know what happened?"
Jun Liyuan cautiously scanned his surroundings and let
the attendants wait behind. He took Jun Lixuan and Ling Qiyang two steps away,
and whispered, "Your Sixth Brother caught wind that war broke out in
Hanguang City at noon yesterday. Before the New Year, many Tamar people in
disguise had infiltrated the city. After that, Tamar withdrew under the pretence
of lack of combat power. Since New Year was quickly arriving, the Eldest Prince
eagerly returned to the Palace and neglected the appropriate defence setting.
Hence, the city guards did not take any precautionary measures."
"Yesterday, every citizen in Ye Empire let loose and
celebrated the New Year's Day. With the bustling festival, their defences were
much more fragile. The Tamar seized this opportunity and attacked the city
while collaborating with planted. Their attack hit from within and outside the
city. Many citizens were robbed and wounded. Some were even killed when they
resisted. In the end, the city fell to Tamar's’ control, and the people are
suffering without means of survival.
Hearing the reason, Jun Lixuan frowned. He struggled to believe it. When
his family reunited in celebration, the people at the border were suffering
from separation and war. Anger boiled within his heart as he muttered,
"Sixth Brother receives news really fast."
"He always had his own means. Emperor Father
will be notified of this by noon. We should go back as soon as possible to avoid
being the collateral of Emperor Father’s rage. Let’s just wait for the news in
the safety of our manors." Jun Liyuan said.
As Ling
Qiyang listened to Jun Liyuan's explanation without evading him,
he was surprised. At the same time, he was bewildered by how deep feuds and
relationships stretched in the imperial family. To know that they did not treat
him as a stranger and even wholly trusted him made him very happy.
"I know what to do, Third Brother, don't worry." Jun Lixuan said.
"Naturally.
With Qiyang by your side, even you will be more
considerate." His younger brother had always been independent and
intelligent. He knew what to do to best benefit himself. "I will go to Serene
Palace first. Then, Sixth Brother will come by a little while later. Let’s act
separately so as not to raise Emperor Father’s suspicions."
"Yes, we will leave first."
"Go ahead." Jun Liyuan nodded.
Then, they went their own ways
