Lei Feng (18 December 1940 – 15 August 1962) was a soldier in the People's Liberation Army who was the object of several major propaganda campaigns in China. |
She said solemnly, "I have something to do today, so our date is canceled. Don’t wait for me."
"Date?" Jiang Yingjing frowned. "Who said we’re going on a date? I only asked you what you were going to do."
"Oh, don't mind the details. Anyway, I won't tell anyone, so if you don’t tell, no one would know that we’re going on a date."
"I already said we were not going on a date! Also, who are you?"
"You could call me Lei Feng if you want to."
[TL NOTE: Lei Feng is a historical icon who’s a symbol of selflessness, and the masses were encouraged to emulate his altruism, modesty, and devotion to Mao. The term "活雷锋/Huó Léi Fēng" (literally "living Lei Feng") has become a noun (or adjective) for anyone who is seen as selfless, or anyone who goes out of their way to help others. “???”
"I informed you out of goodwill, afraid that you’d wait for me in vain. I'm in a hurry now so I'm going to leave first."
“……”
He Xing reached her hand out to Jiang Yingjing, and then, she turned and ran downstairs. Although she enjoyed spending time alone with Jiang Yingjing, lying on his warm chest, she had too many things on her mind. Also, she had big things to do at night, so she didn't really care about being lovey-dovey with a guy.
When she went back to the compound, it was still too early. The clouds were layered, and the sky was tinted light red by the approaching sunset.
Holding a fruit knife in his hand, He Xing walked back and forth in the yard with a strange expression on her face.
Several children were scared silly by her and ran away crying. Their parents hugged them tightly as they walked back home.
She walked from the east of the yard to the west, and then from the west to the east. It was dark outside. The notification on her phone’s screen showed that she had walked more than 20,000 steps that day, but she hadn’t even seen the shadow of the culprit. She was worried that if this went on, someone would really call the police on her...
The rustling trees were enveloped in the inky darkness of the night as the little black cat ran out of the bushes to sit down below the car.
He Xing really couldn't walk anymore. She bent over and stretched her aching limbs. After she felt her body relax a little, her stomach rumbled in hunger. He Xing took out her phone. She unlocked it with her fingerprint, and checked the time displayed on the screen.
According to the usual scenario, she should be dead now. Why hadn't the murderer appeared yet?
"Little Star!"
She heard that familiar voice. It sounded bright and spirited, undisguised happiness evident in the tone.
He Xing knew it was Qin Xingli.
She turned around and looked in the direction of the courtyard lamp. Qin Xingli walked towards her with a smile on his face. His legs were long and straight, and his dark blue denim clothes set him off with a fresh and innocent youthful aura. His smiling eyes sparkled, just like the moon shining bright.
"Are you taking a walk in the yard? I came out just now and saw you walking back and forth. I called you a few times but you didn’t respond."
“Really?"
He Xing's expression froze.
She hadn’t even noticed Qin Xingli appear. She had been very focused just now, and her body was stiff while she kept an eye out for the suspicious criminal with her mind on high alert. However, other than the people who seemed like the culprit, there were also children running and playing, grandparents walking slowly, and acquaintances who greeted her with a smile. He Xing didn't pay much attention to them.
"What are you holding in your hand?"
Qin Xingli approached her and looked down at her hand. The fruit knife with the black scabbard was shrouded in the darkness of the night.
