Chapter 137: The Change in the Wind Circlet (Part 2)
Half an hour wasn’t long, but waiting could feel interminable. To pass the time, Brandon began practicing fire spells, mimicking the wandering wizard by conjuring flames that danced between his fingers. His display quickly drew a crowd of tree elves and Tanian children, who gathered around him with wide-eyed wonder. Far from being annoyed, Brandon embraced the moment, becoming something of a pied piper to the delighted youngsters.
Antietta had worried he might lose his temper, but instead, she found herself moved by the sight of him playing with the children. She opened her mouth to say something but stopped short.
“He’s a good man,” Cinnabar murmured softly. Earlier, she’d bought a beautiful silver ring from a Tania merchant, which she now wore to tie back her fiery red ponytail. The wind gently swayed her hair, complementing her spirited demeanor. “I never thought nobles could be so approachable.”
“Mm,” Antietta agreed quietly.
“Is he your friend?” a deep, resonant voice asked suddenly.
The two ladies turned in surprise to see a towering elf clad in leaves and nearly bare-chested, his muscular frame gleaming under the sun. A druid—and unmistakably a tree elf.
“Yes, sir,” Antietta replied, her cheeks flushing as she instinctively stepped aside.
“Are you the guests from Cold Fir?” the tree elf inquired further.
The noblewoman nodded.
“I’ve heard your kind looks down on us and the Tanians, calling us savages. But this lord’s actions suggest I may have misjudged humans?” he said.
“Lord Brandon doesn’t think that way,” Antietta replied earnestly. “In fact, he protects many Tanians.”
“I see.” The tree elf studied Brandon thoughtfully, nodding.
…
Brandon, however, remained oblivious to their conversation. He continued entertaining the children, performing various tricks that elicited gasps of delight. Though Green Tower was magnificent, foreign wonders were rare here. Word spread quickly, drawing more and more children until it felt like a festival.
Funiya stood beside Brandon, basking in the admiration of her peers. For the first time, she felt as though someone rivaled her father in greatness. Occasionally, she gazed up at Brandon with sparkling eyes, utterly captivated.
While amusing the children, Brandon practiced his elemental control. Elementalists and Planeswalkers used the Elemental Pool differently. For elementalists, the pool acted more like a conduit—the wider the channel, the greater their synergy with elements, allowing them to cast multiple spells simultaneously. Spells didn’t consume elements directly; rather, they restructured ambient energy through the pool. For instance, a Flame Arrow requiring ten fire slots didn’t deplete ten units of fire—it merely occupied ten conduits. Only higher-tier spells drained personal reserves, and even then, the cost was minimal compared to the conduit usage.
Elemental recovery was slow for elementalists, restoring only one point per element daily before reaching elven adept status. Even afterward, it doubled at best. In large-scale wars, elementalists relied on elemental crystals to fuel their magic while using their pools as conduits. Skilled adepts could guide three or four massive spells simultaneously through elemental synergy.
Planeswalkers, on the other hand, operated independently. Their system generated elements via land cards and paid costs internally, forming a self-contained cycle disconnected from the world. Brandon sometimes wondered if this autonomy allowed Planeswalkers to create entire worlds.
As he practiced, Brandon glanced at his fire pool—only thirty-eight slots, far from unlocking Fire Efreet. He sighed in frustration. But then, as flames formed a perfect ring above his palm, a sudden realization struck him like lightning.
He rummaged through his pockets and retrieved a forgotten necklace:
Flame Star [Magic] – Increase fire pool capacity by half; enhance fire element by 10.
This relic dated back to his victory over Ackerman, the Divine Messenger of Earth. With no fire-based deck at the time, he’d stashed it away, completely forgetting its existence until now. Boredom had led him to rediscover it today.
With renewed excitement, Brandon swapped out Ghoul Necklace for Flame Star. Instantly, his fire pool expanded to fifty-seven slots—more than enough for Fire Efreet. Suppressing his urge to laugh triumphantly, he unlocked the card immediately:
Fire Efreet
(Scorching Inferno X)
15 Fire
[Creature – Elemental/Efreet, Level 36]
Place horizontally to deal massive damage to your enemies and shuffle it back into your library.
Pay 2 Fire daily while on the field.
"Upon scorched earth, Fire Efreet strikes terror into its foes."
Before Brandon could admire his new acquisition, a familiar voice called out. Looking past the children, he spotted Kulan, the old swordsman, gesturing to him from the crowd.
Brandon wasn’t surprised. After Veronica’s departure, he’d tasked Kulan—via Ropal, the lizardfolk lord—to investigate why the Cruzeans were here. As a human, Kulan blended in better than the lizardfolk.
He hadn’t expected such swift progress. Barely an hour or two had passed since the Centaur’s Hoof Market incident. Stopping his performance, Brandon reassured the children and excused himself. Despite their reluctance, the kids parted respectfully, letting him approach Kulan.
“What’s the situation?” Brandon asked immediately.
Kulan settled onto a wooden post along the street. “Guess what, boy.”
“How am I supposed to guess?” Brandon retorted irritably. “Their arrival predates ours, so unless the druids tipped them off, they’re not here for the same reason. And the Cruze Empire couldn’t care less about the Wind Circlet unless some divine artifact is involved.”
At the mention of divine artifacts, Brandon’s mind raced. Could rumors about Valhalla have leaked?
“Forget it, just tell me,” Brandon urged, frowning.
“Divine artifact? You’re close—They’re after the Lionheart Sword.”
“The what?” Brandon nearly choked. What did the Lionheart Sword have to do with this place?
“Yes. Do you recall the anomaly near Chablis six months ago?”
Brandon’s expression turned uneasy. He knew all too well—it was his doing. Suppressing his unease, he asked, “But wasn’t the reaction centered near Chablis?”
“It’s said to be a divine artifact resonance linked to the Lionheart Sword. Odd, though—the sword’s supposed to be with the royal family,” Kulan mused. “Regardless, they followed leads from Chablis south into Black Forest, finding nothing until now.”
Brandon understood. Failing elsewhere, these factions likely converged here upon hearing of the Wind Circlet’s changes. Coincidence or not, trouble loomed.
He groaned inwardly. The Blade of Flame, the Lionheart Sword—both carried complex ties to Cruze. Sending a duchess-legion commander underscored the empire’s seriousness. Yet the Wind Circlet had no connection to any of this—it merely housed Valhalla. Convincing others otherwise would prove difficult.
“This isn’t just about Cruze, is it?” Brandon asked suddenly.
Kulan gave him an approving look. “You’re sharp. Eruinians are here too, sent by the royalists before the kingdom split. They’re unaware of recent events. Buga’s wizards, the Temple of Flames, and others are also involved. Druids restricted entry to Eruinians, Cruzeans, and the Temple, while Buga’s wizards entered individually.”
“You’ve uncovered quite a lot.”
“With taverns and adventurers around, secrets don’t last long.”
Brandon nodded grimly. This promised to escalate dramatically. Still, he kept his composure—he held several advantages: relations with the druids, Funiya, and unparalleled familiarity with Black Forest.
Lost in thought, he was jolted by a collective gasp. Panic rippled through the crowd as Kulan nudged him. “Boy, look up.”
Brandon tilted his head skyward—and froze.
Before his eyes, the colossal, endless wall of clouds—the Wind Circlet—was parting slowly, unveiling an ancient gate.
Time seemed to stretch and compress simultaneously. A crack appeared in the white expanse, narrow yet unimaginably vast.
“The Path Within the Clouds…” Brandon whispered, stunned.
