Chapter 130: The Fierce Battle
The knights were still far away.
But the black-haired youth had already hurled two vials toward Brandon—alchemical bombs? Brandon frowned and took a step back. Though the youth claimed he wouldn’t harm anyone, his actions spoke otherwise. Such weapons could maim or kill an ordinary person.
Before the vials reached him, however, a flickering crimson shield of flame materialized in front of Brandon, deflecting the shards of glass and searing acid.
The Crimson Blessing’s fire shield spell had activated automatically.
As the white smoke cleared, Brandon found himself facing two grotesque humanoid creatures. They resembled fleshy golems, their twisted bodies covered in alchemical runes, like sagging lumps of decaying flesh—but weaker than typical golems and only slightly taller than an adult human.
These were mutants, Level 25 alchemical constructs. Devoid of sensation, emotion, or intelligence, they technically did not violate the temples’ doctrines.
At the same time, twelve spherical metallic objects hovered behind the black-haired youth—magitek devices. Brandon instantly understood the boy’s strategy: use alchemical lifeforms to buy time while deploying magitek devices for defense and constructing alchemical arrays. Clearly, the youth was preparing something more advanced.
"Quite experienced in combat," Brandon thought, mildly surprised. "Could he be from the special division?"
He knew the Cruze Royal Alchemist Association had a specialized unit whose members were both skilled alchemists and seasoned fighters. Known as war alchemists, they bore the emblem of the blood-red eagle and were formidable in battle. War alchemists were a combat-oriented subclass of alchemy, but Brandon hadn’t expected to encounter one here—and such a young one at that.
Still, Brandon shook his head. "Is this all you’ve got?"
The young Eruinian lord regarded the two lurching alchemical mutants with disdain. He didn’t even bother drawing his sword. Standing still, he extended his right hand forward, unleashing the wind pressure of the White Crow Swordsmanship. The sheer force of a gold-rank master was overwhelming. The two mutants had no chance to resist—they were sent flying backward.
The trapped noble girl screamed in terror, ducking her head as one of the mutants narrowly grazed her golden hair. The distant knights reacted swiftly, stepping aside to let the mutants crash into the ground, bounce up, and smash through a fence before plummeting hundreds of meters below.
"Hehe, it seems that the dignity of the Cruze Empire isn't that inviolable after all." Brandon extended his hand mockingly.
The wind pressure surged forward. The youth’s eyes widened in shock. He hadn’t expected this Eruinian to be so formidable. Two upper-tier iron-rank mutants hadn’t even delayed him for a moment. In past battles, even the strongest opponents would have been slowed by these creatures.
"Tel’s Protective Barrier!" the youth shouted desperately. The magitek devices formed a circular shield around him, barely blocking Brandon’s impromptu whirlwind.
Tel, a renowned archmage, was famous for his defensive spells and magitek devices. Having blocked Brandon’s attack, the black-haired youth steadied himself, preparing to counterattack. But just then, a massive hand clamped down on his shoulder.
The knights had arrived.
"Rono, you’re no match for him. Step back and support us with alchemy. Leave this guy to us," said the knight who had restrained him. Fully armored and wearing a full-face helmet adorned with purple and cyan feathers, his voice was muffled. Brandon recognized the attire—a Knight-Cent.
"Commander?" Rono was startled. He had assumed the Eruinian was merely a second-rate elementalist, but now he realized the young man Faina had provoked was far more dangerous than anticipated.
"Leave it to us."
"What about Lord Kalenz?"
"He’ll be here shortly."
The knight commander turned to Brandon, his emerald-green eyes gleaming with caution beneath his visor. "Isn’t that inviolable after all? Big talk for someone from Eruin. Allow me to show you our strength."
With a swing of his sword, over twenty knights charged forward from both flanks. Meanwhile, the spherical magitek devices dispersed around Rono, projecting twelve beams of light onto the ground to draw a complex alchemical array. As each node was completed, Rono tossed a lesser moon crystal into the central miniature array. The array consisted of three layers and twenty-two nodes, forming a conical synthesis formula.
The speed of the magitek device array construction was astonishing, rivaling even blood alchemy. However, magitek devices were expensive and rare, requiring high-quality amber stones to function. Only a wealthy empire like Cruze could afford to equip its alchemists with such luxuries.
Brandon sneered inwardly. The pride of humanity, the Eagle Empire of Cruze? In Amber Sword, the tragic fate of Princess Regent was inextricably linked to this so-called glorious empire. Where had those assassins come from? Duke Anlek had no answers, but players were relentless. How could such secrets remain hidden?
Brandon thought bitterly that he hadn’t yet sought revenge against these people, yet they had come knocking. Fine. Let these arrogant fools understand that Vonder did not revolve around Cruze.
Cruze was merely the most favored nation of the Temple of Flames.
Glancing at the youth, Brandon recognized the alchemical array being constructed—an agent called Swiftwind Mist that greatly amplified close-combat prowess. He had no intention of letting it complete.
Though the magitek devices’ array speed would shame most alchemists, Brandon found it unimpressive.
Extending his right hand, he gripped a flame-patterned agate. Containing over ten times the magic energy of a lesser moon crystal, it was perfect for crafting an embryo. With a thought, the power of Bahamut’s personally crafted high-level alchemical array pierced the magic crystal, shattering it instantly.
The centaur merchant, witnessing this display, cried out in anguish. That had been a flame-patterned agate!
Pure, untainted magic energy surged forth from the shattered crystal, glowing a beautiful sky-blue mist-like hue as it swirled around Brandon’s hand. Three horizontal arrays along his gauntlet compressed the energy together, forming multiple surfaces within a sphere in his palm. The blue energy pulsed faintly, as if something was about to break free.
Brandon hurled a dazzling blue beam from the sphere. It streaked through three knights and slammed into Rono’s array, obliterating it instantly.
Alchemy counterspell.
The opponent was also an alchemist—and a combat-oriented one at that.
What shocked Rono was how quickly the array had formed. A counterspell of the seventh tier was two tiers higher than Swiftwind Mist. Blood alchemy? No, blood alchemy couldn’t achieve such sophistication. Besides, blood alchemy arrays glowed red, whereas the array Brandon had used was bright white.
Confused and overwhelmed, Rono staggered backward, coughing up blood. Despite clutching his chest, crimson liquid spurted between his fingers. The magic energy backlash had severely damaged his internal organs.
"Rono!" Faina, still entangled by the vines, screamed in horror.
The knights were equally stunned. They hadn’t expected their empire’s prodigy, hailed as the strongest new talent in alchemy, to be incapacitated so easily—and by another young alchemist, no less.
The Knight-Cent was initially shocked, but rage quickly followed. He couldn’t imagine the emperor’s fury upon learning that such a genius had been injured under his watch—or the punishment awaiting him.
"Kill him!" he bellowed, but quickly corrected himself, remembering they were in druid territory. "Capture that Eruinian!"
"Capture me?" Brandon scoffed. "What gives you the right?"
He scanned the surroundings. Each of the twenty-plus knights present was at least mid-tier silver rank—a testament to Cruze’s strength and the noble status of the black-haired youth and the golden-haired twin-tailed girl.
But to Brandon, they were nothing more than insignificant ants.
Having overheard their conversation earlier, Brandon knew reinforcements might arrive soon. He had no intention of wasting time on these foot soldiers.
Taking a single step forward, an overwhelming shockwave erupted outward from the young Eruinian lord. Propelled by both Level 16 military swordsmanship and gold-rank strength, the White Crow Swordsmanship’s energy was razor-sharp, slicing through the air like countless blades despite Brandon not drawing his sword.
The Knight-Cent never imagined this youth had already reached gold rank and mastered such a swordsmanship—"A quasi-Sword Saint!" The knights screamed as they were swept away in a fan-shaped arc. The vast power gap rendered them powerless to resist.
In an instant, over twenty Cruze knights lay defeated.
Brandon wasn’t surprised. Before his journey to Shafrend’s underground labyrinth, dealing with them might have required some effort. Now, they were mere insects.
Looking up, he saw the noble girl shrink back fearfully.
"Don’t… don’t come any closer…"
