Chapter 121: The Five-Headed Basilisk, Part 2

The battle reached its zenith.

Brandon raised The Sword of the Earth high above his head and brought it down with force toward the basilisk’s right front leg—a pillar-like limb as thick as marble. But despite its colossal size, the creature moved with surprising agility. It retracted its leg just in time, leaving Brandon’s blade to cleave only air.

However, the sheer power of The Sword of the Earth shattered the ground beneath the basilisk. Earth and stone erupted outward, forming a deep trench that destabilized the behemoth. Its massive body tilted precariously to one side.

Yet Brandon’s attempt to press the advantage wasn’t so straightforward. The five heads of the basilisk lashed out like whips, diving downward in succession to snap at him. Forced to retreat repeatedly, the young lord found himself pushed beyond the ten-foot melee range.

This gave Kulan, Cinnabar, and Ropal an opening from behind. Sensing their approach, Brandon shouted urgently, “Watch out for the venom shield!”

Kulan and Cinnabar froze mid-charge. Before them, a shimmering emerald barrier of liquid toxin materialized out of thin air. Both warriors halted instantly, but the seasoned swordsman reacted faster. As he stopped, Kulan drew a dagger and hurled it at the magical shield.

A soft hiss sounded as the blade dissolved into white smoke before it could even pierce the venomous barrier.

“Marsha preserve us,” Kulan thought, silently thanking Brandon for the timely warning. But how to deal with this devilish defense?

Ropal, however, seemed unfazed. The Fireclaw lizardfolk lord, ever stoic with cold yellow eyes, charged straight into the venom shield. The toxic liquid washed over him, yet it appeared to have no effect other than cleansing dirt from his dark red scales.

Toxin immunity.

Brandon hadn’t anticipated this ability from the Fireclaw lizardfolk. Still, since the basilisk was technically a reptile—and thus distantly related to Ropal—it made sense that some natural resistance would exist between similar species.

Ropal’s bold move caught everyone off guard—including the basilisk itself. By the time the creature attempted to turn and retaliate, it was too late. The Fireclaw leader wielded an oversized double-headed sword, driving it deep into the basilisk’s right hind leg. A burst of flames erupted from the blade, instantly vaporizing blood and tendons before they could spray outward. Instead, a scarlet mist shot forth like a ribbon.

The monster reared up, all five heads shrieking in unison. The piercing cry echoed for miles, startling flocks of birds into flight. At the same time, the hovering venom shields behind the basilisk wavered and vanished.

Now was the moment.

Kulan and Cinnabar seized the opportunity, charging forward. But after only a few steps, the ground beneath them collapsed.

“What is this?” Cinnabar exclaimed, startled. She watched as vibrant green thorns erupted from the broken earth, writhing like living tendrils toward her feet.

Kulan faced the same predicament.

By now, Brandon had recovered from the basilisk’s frontal assault. He saw the peril facing Cinnabar and Kulan—venomous thorns summoned by the basilisk—but had no time to explain. Instead, he planted his sword into the ground to halt his backward momentum and extended his left hand forward.

At that instant, glowing turquoise spots appeared in the air behind Brandon. These weren’t mere lights; they were small magical arrays spreading across the sky like translucent cerulean wings.

From these arrays, beams of light shot forth like cannonballs. They landed on the ground, leapt back into the air, and coalesced into a crescent shape.

Brandon played another card.

Hundreds of golden holy swords formed a semi-circle around the basilisk, targeting it with deadly precision.

The young recruits watching from afar were awestruck. They had imagined grand displays of swordsmanship and terrifying spells, but nothing compared to this spectacle of raw power—their lord’s overwhelming strength.

Karglis stared at the scene, his expression odd. “Meria, I think I’m an idiot.”

Meria lowered her head, blushing slightly. “Yes… you always have been.”

Even the basilisk sensed the threat. Its fifteen eyes glowed an eerie green as the thorny vines redirected themselves. They grew rapidly, weaving together into a towering, dense thorn shield several dozen meters high.

“Attack!” Brandon roared at Kulan.

The massive beast had no chance to recover. Simultaneously, the array of holy swords unleashed blinding beams of golden energy. Jagged pillars of light rained down like divine fire, incinerating the tangled thorns into ash.

The once-impenetrable thorn shield crumbled under the barrage, reduced to a sieve. The beams continued downward, colliding with the remaining venom shields. Upon contact, golden rays refracted across the surface, scattering radiant showers of light.

As temperatures soared, the venom shield turned red-hot, then vaporized. Cracks formed within, allowing beams to penetrate until the entire construct collapsed. The light struck the basilisk’s hardened, crystalline hide, causing identical reactions: refraction, heating, cracking, and finally disintegration. Blood turned to red mist, rising in plumes as the creature writhed in agony, thrashing wildly through the forest.

Meanwhile, Kulan, Cinnabar, and Ropal pressed their attacks. Dodging the flailing limbs and steel-hard tail, they focused on inflicting wounds wherever possible.

Though both attackers and target shared upper gold-rank status, the basilisk lacked the agility of creatures like wind wyrms. However, its defensive capabilities were formidable. Cinnabar’s lightning arcs stretched tens of meters, yet most of her strikes barely scratched the surface, leaving only faint scorch marks. Kulan faced similar challenges.

Only Ropal, lacking ranged attacks, inflicted consistent damage. His methodical strikes inspired others. Kulan and Cinnabar abandoned elemental assaults, opting instead for direct melee blows. Each strike drew blood, gradually weakening the beast.

Their efforts paid off. Despite inheriting Hydra-like regeneration abilities, the basilisk’s recovery wasn’t limitless. Excessive blood loss caused dizziness, slowing its multi-headed onslaught.

Brandon, who had been drawing fire, felt the pressure ease. After dodging another whip-like neck swing and retaliating during a brief opening, he rolled to the creature’s right flank. Standing upright, he took a deep breath and unleashed a devastating blow with White Crow Sword Technique.

Enhanced by level 16 (+2) Eruin Military Swordsmanship and amplified further by Strength Surge, this single strike generated a vortex of sword energy. A white tornado erupted seemingly from nowhere, sweeping horizontally toward the basilisk. Air currents coiled into jagged canine teeth nearly ten meters long, biting into the already wounded chest and abdomen. Gouts of blood erupted several meters high.

But it didn’t end there.

The power of The Sword of the Earth tore apart the earth beneath. Wherever the tornado passed, the ground split open, rising ten meters on either side. Layers of terrain collapsed inward, dragging the struggling basilisk into the fissure despite its desperate attempts to anchor itself.

When the chaos subsided, the battlefield bore little resemblance to its former state. Centered around Brandon, a cone-shaped depression remained, layered with collapsing earth. It resembled a sudden, localized landslide carved into the forest floor.

Half-buried in rubble and grievously injured, the basilisk lay motionless, clearly near death.

Brandon sheathed his sword. Silence fell over the forest.

After the battle, the young recruits began cleaning up the battlefield. Fleur and Tia used a whirlwind technique to clear lingering venom clouds from the surrounding area, ensuring no careless souls wandered into danger.

Initially, the youths were shaken. The basilisk’s might exceeded their wildest imaginations. Yet, standing beside its lifeless form—a towering corpse spanning multiple stories—they couldn’t help but feel disbelief. Some dared touch its crystalline scales, marveling at the alien texture.

Brandon had already instructed Fleur to pry loose the basilisk’s chest scales. Though beasts lacked equipment drops, Red-Handed Softie’s Law demanded adherence. Known as "Hydra’s Blessing," these scales were less jet-black than the creature’s dorsal plates, instead possessing a pale cyan hue. Brandon knew they were invaluable alchemical materials.

Unfortunately, many were damaged during his final attack. Only thirty usable pieces remained—enough for crafting a single piece of enchanted armor.

Brandon decided on a breastplate but first dispatched Kulan and the recruits to search for the basilisk’s lair. While beasts lacked equipment drops, their dens often contained treasures worth investigating.
