Chapter 193: The "Moonlight and Cat" Identity Crisis
After the fireworks of Group B, the performances in Group A felt like a bit of a letdown for the audience.
It wasn’t that the competitors—Lou Yitong, Yang Weize, and Zhu Ya—were lacking. Anyone who made it to the semifinals of The Parrot Cello Contest was no slouch.
No, the real problem was Bai Xi.
Two years ago, Bai Xi had already clinched second place in The Parrot Cello Contest. Now, facing these opponents, her dominance seemed almost laughably easy to the audience—as if she were cutting through butter with a hot knife.
In fact, by the time Bai Xi was set to perform as the fourth contestant, she was already stifling yawns in the Group A green room.
“Boring. So damn boring.”
Her eyes flicked disinterestedly toward the large screen displaying the current performance.
Zhu Ya, the third performer, was on stage now. Her playing had lulled Bai Xi into a daze, each note hitting her like a lullaby. By the time Zhu Ya finished, Bai Xi was practically nodding off.
She shook herself awake, her expression twisting into one of disdain.
“What even is this level of skill? How did they make it to the semifinals? Did they get bonus points for being old or something?”
At least Group B was entertaining. Yun Qiuqiu, Gan Yanyu, and Lin Tian were all there, putting on a show worth watching. She’d been hoping to hang out with Gan Yanyu, but alas—they weren’t in the same green room.
“Ugh, unbearable.”
Bai Xi muttered under her breath when suddenly, the door to the green room swung open.
“Oh! Miss Zhu, you must be exhausted,” Bai Xi said with a grin, straightening up from the table.
By the time Lin Tian received word again, it was about the results of Group A.
Unsurprisingly, Bai Xi had crushed the competition, earning seven perfect “A+” scores to secure first place and advance to the finals.

Meanwhile, backstage, a staff member approached Gan Yanyu. “Miss Gan, it’s your turn to go on stage.”
Gan Yanyu nodded, turning to Lin Tian. “Lin Tian.”
“I’m not going,” he replied flatly.
He didn’t need to guess what she wanted—to drag him onstage for some promotional photo op. Public appearances weren’t exactly his forte.
“Fine,” Gan Yanyu said, shrugging.
“But I’ll walk you to the edge of the stage,” Lin Tian offered.
Together, they made their way down the corridor until they reached the entrance. There, Lin Tian watched as Gan Yanyu stepped onto the stage.
At the center of the stage stood the gleaming trophy of The Parrot Cello Contest: a stunning blue crystal parrot, the contest’s official mascot. The organizers clearly knew how to build hype. As the trophy sparkled under the lights and both Bai Xi and Gan Yanyu emerged from opposite sides, the atmosphere reached a fever pitch.
Audience members leapt to their feet, phones held high as they captured the moment.
“Phones?” Lin Tian murmured, noticing the scene for the first time. Was filming allowed during the event?
Curious, he unlocked his phone and scrolled through social media. That’s when he saw it—the internet had exploded.
“OMG, Gan Yanyu actually won! She’s so amazing!”
“AHHH, I’m crying tears of joy! Go, Miss Gan, win the finals!”
“No surprise here. Lin Tian is a genius. Absolute legend.”
“Of course Old Gan’s granddaughter did it! She proved herself!”
As Gan Yanyu’s victory sunk in, the powder keg of tension that had been simmering online ignited in full force. Some fans were quick to call out the haters who’d mocked Gan Yanyu earlier, while longtime supporters—those who’d followed her since the days when she was dismissed as “just Gan Hua’s granddaughter”—were moved to tears. After years of ridicule and doubt, she’d finally redeemed herself. Sweet victory indeed.
But back in the concert hall, chaos reigned. Technically, the competition was over, and this was just the post-event segment. Yet, ignoring security warnings, fans surged forward, shouting slogans like “Go, Bai Xi!” and “You’ve got this, Gan Yanyu!” It was pandemonium—a fan frenzy that mirrored the idol culture Lin Tian had grown increasingly familiar with.
Still, something felt… off.
Amidst the cheers, Lin Tian caught a peculiar shout.
“Cat-chan, you can do it!”
A girl in the crowd screamed at Gan Yanyu, her voice brimming with excitement. “You and Moonlight have to win the championship!”
Gan Yanyu froze. Lin Tian blinked, equally stunned.
What the hell was going on?
Before either could process the situation, Lin Tian’s phone buzzed in his pocket. He answered immediately.
“Mr. Lin, emergency,” He Zhichen’s urgent voice crackled through the line.
“Where are you? Still inside the venue?”
“Yes.”
“Good. Stay put. I’m on my way.”
“What’s wrong?” Lin Tian asked, confused.
“Wrong? Dozens of reporters are camped outside Qingtian Hall right now. Practically every music media outlet in Qingzhou is here waiting for you and Miss Gan.”
“What?!”
He Zhichen sighed heavily. “Don’t you get it? Your identities—they’re about to be exposed.”
“How did this happen?!” Lin Tian was taken aback.
“You really don’t know? You performed a piece by ‘Moonlight and Cat’ that was released just two days ago—and someone recorded it and posted it online. Do you think the internet would miss something like that?”
“Shit.” Lin Tian pinched the bridge of his nose. This was bad.
“I’m almost there. Just hold tight.”
As He Zhichen hung up, Gan Yanyu returned from the stage, sensing Lin Tian’s unease. “What’s wrong?”
“Our cover’s blown. There are reporters everywhere outside.”
Gan Yanyu’s face fell. “What do we do?”
“He Zhichen will handle it,” Lin Tian reassured her, though guilt gnawed at him. He should’ve seen this coming. Rumors linking them to ‘Moonlight and Cat’ had been swirling for weeks. But performing a brand-new track? That might have been pushing it.
And now, thanks to their little stunt, every music journalist in Qingzhou was clamoring for answers.
Ten minutes later, He Zhichen arrived, clutching a sheet of paper. Handing it to Lin Tian, he explained, “This is a PR statement. I wrote it on the way here.”
Lin Tian scanned the document, frowning. “Do you think they’ll buy it?”
“They don’t have concrete proof yet. Deny everything, stick to the script, and we’ll clean up the mess online later. Trust me—it’ll work.”
He Zhichen’s confidence was reassuring, but Lin Tian couldn’t shake the feeling that this was only the beginning.
“If anything, use this as an opportunity. Address the press directly and shut down the rumors once and for all. Oh, and memorize the statement—it’ll sound more convincing.”
Lin Tian nodded, gratitude swelling in his chest. For all his quirks, He Zhichen was a damn good agent when it mattered most.
“Wait for me,” Lin Tian told Gan Yanyu before stepping toward the exit, hastily committing the words to memory.
When he finally emerged, the sight before him was overwhelming. Dozens of reporters blocked his path, cameras flashing like strobe lights. At the sight of him, the crowd erupted.
“Mr. Lin!”
“Lin Tian!”
Questions flew from every direction. Raising a hand, Lin Tian commanded silence.
“Stop.”
The room fell eerily quiet. Pointing to a female reporter near the front, he gestured for her to speak.
“Mr. Lin,” she began breathlessly, “there’s speculation that you and Miss Gan are behind the ‘Moonlight and Cat’ account—that she’s ‘Cat-chan’ and you’re the 18-year-old prodigy composer known as Moonlight. Is this true?”
The question hung heavy in the air. All eyes turned to Lin Tian, awaiting his response.
Glancing at the crumpled paper in his hand, Lin Tian hesitated. Then, exhaling deeply, he stuffed the script into his pocket and spoke.
“Yes. It’s true. I am Moonlight.”
