Chapter 89: The Gathering Storm Part 3
"17th of the Moon of Autumn’s End, written in Tonygel, within the Barony of Cold Fir — To Her Highness Grifine Colcova Odysseus. In the battle two nights ago, the undead army of ‘Stygian Lord’ Enstallone from Madara bypassed the four southern territories and launched a surprise assault on Cold Fir Castle. This attack caused significant casualties, and Baron Grudin himself fell in defense of the realm. As both a Frontier Knight of the kingdom and the lord of Valhalla who had been graciously hosted by the late baron, I consider it my duty to temporarily assume command of local defenses. After a night of fighting, the undead have been repelled. However, to prevent further incursions, I will take charge of both military and administrative duties here until Your Highness appoints a new governor."
Macaro paused halfway through reading the letter, his expression growing increasingly peculiar. Still, he cleared his throat and pressed on:
"I also call into question Earl Jandel's responsibility for concealing the presence of the undead army in the south and allowing Madara’s forces to silently pass through the four territories. Furthermore, I seek Your Highness’s understanding and forgiveness. Enclosed with this letter is a magic stone recording images from the battlefield as proof of my claims."
He looked up.
"The magic stone is with me," Princess Grifine replied calmly. "Please continue, Lord Macaro."
"That is all, Your Highness."
"No, there is one more line." Her thick lashes lowered slightly.
Macaro glanced back at the letter and indeed found an additional line of small text. His eyelids twitched involuntarily as he read it aloud: "—Brandon."
The room fell silent.
With a strange expression, Macaro placed the letter back on the table. He exchanged glances with the others and joked, "I know whether Baron Grudin fulfilled his duties or not, but this young man seems unusually bold…"
He searched for words to describe such audacity but came up short. "It’s simply..."
"Absurd," Master Liwutz interjected coldly. "This is a direct challenge to the kingdom. He’s undermining the rules that govern noble conduct."
At the mention of "rules," Princess Grifine’s brow furrowed slightly—a subtle shift that did not escape the sharp-eyed Violet Earl.
"What do you all think?" she asked.
To everyone’s surprise, Aiko was the first to speak. Though visibly nervous, he stood and declared, "I believe Sir Brandon’s words. He is a true knight."
"People can deceive, young man," Master Liwutz cautioned.
Both Macaro and Baeli nodded in agreement. As seasoned nobles well-versed in the intricacies of human nature, they understood better than most how appearances could be misleading.
The half-elven princess remained impassive, her expression neither approving nor disapproving. Her silver eyes flickered faintly as she regarded the earnest young man.
"Master Liwutz," Aiko said respectfully, bowing slightly yet standing firm, "In life-or-death situations, people don’t lie. Moreover, what I witnessed were actions, not just words."
The youthful naivety in his face began to fade as he scanned the room—all except Princess Grifine—and continued, "Otherwise, I cannot fathom how Sir Brandon could so boldly reprimand us while even the legendary divine artifact acknowledged his words—"
"Hmm?"
Grifine tilted her head slightly, intrigued. She recalled hearing about the divine artifact reacting to Brandon from Macaro earlier. But what did Aiko mean when he said Brandon’s rebuke triggered its response?
Her curiosity mirrored that of any fifteen-year-old girl encountering something new, though her demeanor retained an air of refined composure.
Master Liwutz hadn’t expected Aiko to bring up this detail—they had intended to keep it hidden, as it wasn’t exactly flattering. Yet seeing the rare spark of girlish curiosity in the princess’s gaze, he knew there was no hiding it. If Grifine wanted to know something, she would find out—it was inevitable given her sharp intellect.
Clearing his throat, Liwutz gave a slight nod to Macaro.
Macaro sighed inwardly; he had been the harshest recipient of Brandon’s scolding. Reluctantly, the sly fox recounted the entire incident.
When he finished, he added, "Your Highness, we didn’t intend to conceal such a minor matter deliberately."
Princess Grifine nodded graciously. "Different perspectives lead to conflict—it’s only natural. Besides, isn’t that what you taught me, Master Liwutz?"
Liwutz bowed deeply, humbled. He recognized her veiled reproach for attempting to hide the truth. While it unsettled him to incur suspicion from someone above, he also felt a measure of relief. Her tone carried a hint of frustration rather than outright blame—an indication of familiarity rather than estrangement.
Macaro and Baeli exchanged glances, relieved that the princess chose not to pursue the matter further. Though technically under Duke Rhun’s command, Baeli now fully aligned himself with this emerging coalition of interests.
Yet the half-elven princess probed further: "You mentioned that when Brandon rebuked you, the divine artifact reacted. What exactly did he say to provoke such a response?"
"He questioned whether we still remembered the ideals of our former king," Macaro murmured. Each word Brandon spoke struck deep, shaking Macaro to his core. For the royalists, those questions challenged their very purpose—but they rang undeniably true, leaving them unable to refute him.
"Oh?"
Now Grifine was truly interested. She recalled Orville recounting a story—a tale of a lone knight leading refugees against overwhelming odds in a charge against Madara’s forces. It felt like a relic from an age when Eruin’s nobility still burned with fervor rather than apathy.
Yet the remarkable part was that this story unfolded in her own time.
Thus, she never forgot the knight at the heart of the tale.
And today, Macaro’s words stirred memories of that moment. "Could you elaborate?" she asked instinctively.
Macaro hesitated.
For the first time, Baeli stepped forward. "Allow me to recount it," he offered.
"Thank you," the princess murmured, inclining her head slightly.
Baeli’s expression grew solemn. "I remember Eruin’s brightest days. Knights bearing horns and pennants, banners unfurled as swords charged forth."
A profound silence settled over the room.
Macaro sighed, taking over where Baeli left off: Battlefields became seas of flags adorned with golden crests—Colcova, Goran, Elsun, Anlek. Nobles upheld their oaths then…"
"Do you remember those oaths "
"Of course."
The princess closed her eyes, clasping her hands together tightly as if in prayer. Her voice was clear and resolute, echoing within her mind:
"Beneath this sword, I swear a sage’s oath. I vow to lead my people—away from strife and slaughter, from the arrogance and greed of imperial nobility. I vow never to repeat history’s cold-blooded mistakes, ensuring this new kingdom’s nobles adhere to knightly virtues—just, resolute, brave, merciful, and generous. This vow I make, dedicating my life to uphold it."
As the last syllable faded, the half-elven princess sat in stunned silence.
What Brandon said resonated deeply, piercing the fragile parts of her resolve. Grifine always believed herself strong enough to shoulder the burdens of leadership. Yet when someone else articulated her lifelong dream so clearly...
Even this resilient half-elf found herself momentarily speechless.
She didn’t realize that in another world, another version of herself worked tirelessly toward the same goal. In that reality, Eruin was a fragile ship adrift in a stormy sea of darkness. But guided by unshakable belief, she steered it through towering waves and crashing tempests.
That dream—the one woven throughout the Amber Sword saga—was a beacon in the dark, drawing countless souls like moths to flame. Valkyrie, players, and countless others sacrificed everything to see it realized.
In that dream, King Eck swore beneath his sword to lead his knights beyond the shadows, bringing warmth and peace to all.
That dream had shattered.
But here, in this moment, it was only beginning.
Princess Grifine opened her eyes, her recent uncertainty swept away. Though storm clouds gathered ever thicker in the northern sky, and the first snow seemed imminent, she felt certain of her path forward.
"He’s right," she said, her tone grave. "Dreams remain unfulfilled unless they overcome reality. Our challenges won’t diminish because we grow steadfast. The question is how we choose to face them."
She raised her gaze, addressing the room.
"Now, tell me your thoughts on this matter."
