Chapter 64: The King Beneath the Earth, Part 15

No matter how sharp Brandon's hearing was, he wasn’t eavesdropping on the whispered conversations of a group of ordinary youths several dozen meters away. Instead, he was focused on familiarizing himself with the sword in his hand—a magical blade, albeit a rather common one, lighter than a standard longsword.

This weapon qualified as a lesser magic artifact. Brandon had used similar swords before as transitional gear but had long since forgotten their names.

With a casual flick of the sword, Brandon sent gusts of wind slicing through the sandy ground, leaving two shallow grooves. Kulan’s eyes lit up at this display. "So it is White Crow Swordsmanship—" The elder had recovered from his earlier surprise but quickly raised an eyebrow.

"White Crow Swordsmanship is one of Eruin’s closely guarded royal techniques. How did this kid learn it?" Kulan wondered silently.

The same motion sparked debate among the youths.

"What’s he doing?" Mahler asked, watching the white glow on Brandon’s sword and the swirling sand around him, his brow furrowed in confusion.

"Creating smoke, probably," Joka replied uncertainly. "He’s searching for an opportunity to defeat his opponent. You need to use your brain in battle, Mahler."

"But wouldn’t he also be blinded by the smoke?"

Joka faltered, rolling her eyes. "There must be some special technique involved. Why would anyone deliberately create trouble for themselves? Think about it—"

But Koven interrupted them. After observing for a while, he finally concluded, "He’s getting used to the sword."

"Getting used to the sword?"

"That sword was given to him by Captain Kulan," someone added.

Was switching weapons right before battle really okay? Even these inexperienced youths understood that such a change could affect performance. They turned their attention back to the arena, where Brandon had already stopped practicing and appeared ready.

Metissa stood slightly behind Brandon, holding her silver spear. Due to their descent underground, her unicorn hadn’t accompanied her. But even without it, the ancient combat techniques of the Silver Elves were formidable.

Kulan knew this firsthand and didn’t underestimate the girl.

The northern gate of the coliseum opened again, revealing the same Cerberus hound that had died once before. This time, the beast crouched low, its three massive heads growling deeply, six blood-red eyes scanning the arena for its previous foe.

Its reappearance drew murmurs of disbelief. No one expected it to resurrect.

Having learned from its last encounter, the sulfur river demon waited for the arena’s master to release its chains before cautiously entering the field. It sniffed the air, warily circling Brandon and Metissa.

To the untrained eye, it seemed the creature had learned caution. But Kulan detected something unusual in the air.

The elder frowned, studying the center of the arena. "This brat doesn’t know how to control his presence. The entire coliseum is under his influence. Compared to him, that girl’s aura is much gentler…"

His frown deepened. "But what is this strange sensation? An element? What kind of element is this…?"

The temperature was dropping rapidly. Frost began forming on the walls and sandy ground, and the air grew stagnant, heavy with a sense of stillness.

Even the youths dozens of meters away felt a sluggishness, as though sinking into quicksand. For the Cerberus hound directly facing Brandon, the sensation was overwhelming.

Brandon stared calmly at the beast’s six enormous, blood-red eyes. The hound, however, felt as though an immense mountain pressed down on it, its limbs shackled by invisible chains. Movement became impossible, let alone attack.

Instinctively, the hound lowered its massive heads, as if bowing to an insurmountable force.

"Huh?" Kulan blinked in surprise.

At that moment, Brandon’s mind was crystal clear. Words like "stasis" and "stability" resonated within him. He felt as though he could grasp the underlying rule—much like during his battle with Kabirus, when the power of elements seemed within his control.

He knew this feeling was an illusion. At the gold rank, elemental powers acted as triggered attributes, not something fully controllable. Yet, this attribute had clearly been activated.

Everyone, including the youths, noticed something amiss. They watched in awe as the towering, two-story-tall beast collapsed before Brandon, its limbs and chin pressing against the ground like a subject submitting to a king.

It had no choice. The overwhelming force rendered it immobile.

Brandon stood still, accepting this submission as if it were natural.

The sight left everyone stunned, especially Kulan. "What element is this? Some kind of 'kingly aura'?"

"Metissa, go," Brandon said softly, his voice betraying none of the turmoil inside him. A primal force roared within him, demanding dominion over everything, as though a monstrous entity was on the verge of breaking free.

He even had the illusion that with a mere gesture, the world would crumble beneath his will.

A godlike power.

Then the Silver Elf princess moved. Her silver spear transformed into a gleaming line, its tip radiating cold, deathly light. Time seemed to stretch as the streamlined arc traced a half-circle across the arena, slowly approaching the hound.

One strike would pierce all three of its massive heads.

But at the last moment, driven by the oppressive scent of impending death, the Cerberus hound broke free from Brandon’s elemental influence. With all its might, it raised its head and leapt backward, narrowly avoiding the fatal blow.

Unfortunately for the beast, Brandon had an odd thought. Feeling as though the heavens and earth were under his control, he willed the creature back with a mere thought. A soft shh sound followed as Metissa thrust her spear upward. The silver spear pierced through all three heads, lifting the unfortunate Cerberus hound high into the air before flinging it forward.

Its body crashed onto the sandy ground with a thunderous impact.

One strike. Instant death.

The youths, including Mahler, were utterly dumbfounded.

Kulan almost thought he heard his jaw hit the floor. Instinctively, he reached up to check if it was still attached.

Spatial elements. The revelation left him utterly speechless.

"What is...?" Joka’s voice caught in his throat, the rest of his sentence swallowed back. No one mocked him; they were all equally stunned.

Brandon himself had noticed something peculiar. He glanced at his hands, unsure. Whether it was spatial locking or temporal stasis, it bordered dangerously close to Existential Forces.

But before he could dwell on it, Metissa returned to his side. "My lord?" she asked, surprised. As the one who delivered the blow, her perception of the event was sharper than anyone else’s.

Brandon waved her off, still unable to confirm his suspicions. Just then, the thunderous voice boomed overhead:

"Mortal, will you continue the challenge?"

"Of course," Brandon replied, his heart torn between excitement and trepidation.

Evarian soon entered the arena.

"This time, I’ll handle it," Brandon said. He could feel his control over the elements waning as the peak of his power passed. He needed to test his hypothesis quickly.

Metissa watched him, likely guessing his intent, and nodded slightly.

Brandon sheathed his sword and advanced toward the gray dwarf lord. His icy presence surged forward, pressing down on Evarian like a tidal wave.

Evarian hesitated, then let out a low growl. The gray dwarf immediately abandoned his earlier posturing, discarding the swagger meant to intimidate his opponent. His small eyes gleamed beneath his horned helmet as he gripped his warhammer tightly with both hands, lowering his stance into a combat-ready position.

Even Joka noticed the shift—a primal alertness akin to a beast sensing danger.

Could that young man truly be so terrifying?

Joka scrutinized Brandon, struggling to reconcile the image of the seemingly affable youth he’d interacted with to the figure now causing the fortress-like dwarf to tense up.

Perhaps Brandon was skilled, but he was so young. Recalling his own experiences, Joka reasoned that Brandon’s reaction had been similar to those of the cavalry guards in the mine. Their skill levels should be comparable.

Though, to Joka, that was already impressive.

But he soon realized how wrong he was. Brandon had already moved. Seizing the fleeting opportunity, he launched a Charge.

To everyone else, his speed was incomprehensible. They couldn’t track his movements—only saw him vanish, reappear, and materialize before Evarian as if teleporting.

Ripples trailed behind him, distorting space.

The gray dwarf froze momentarily, but his combat instincts kicked in. He roared, raising his warhammer to block. Yet his actions froze mid-motion. Brandon’s sword danced between existence and nonexistence—phantom-like, it slipped past his defenses, gliding through the gap between helmet and chestplate, piercing his throat.

The dwarf’s eyes widened, managing only a faint gurgling sound.

Brandon halted before him like a ghost, one hand pressing against the warhammer, the other withdrawing the blade in a smooth motion, leaving a trail of blood. Then, the massive fortress of a body collapsed with a heavy thud. Black blood slowly seeped from beneath the fallen dwarf.
